The post The Best All-Inclusive Vacations Under $500, Including Airfare appeared first on SmarterTravel.

These days, it’s almost impossible to find a vacation to a tropical destination that includes airfare and lodging for less than $500 per person. Almost. Those who know where and how to look, however, can easily end up on a sunny beach, or sipping mai tais at the bar of an all-inclusive resort, without having handed over five Benjamin Franklins for the whole experience. Need a bit of guidance getting there? Below are four all-inclusive tropical vacations—plus four bonus budget beach destinations—including airfare for under $500 per person.

Editor’s Note: The airfares, hotel rates, and vacation package prices in this story are sample prices only, and may vary depending on your specific travel dates.

The Best Destinations for All-Inclusive Vacations Under $500

All-inclusive resorts and packages allow guests to take care of all food and lodging expenses upfront, meaning they can relax on vacation without fear of unexpected costs cropping up during their trip. These four destinations offer travelers a chance to book an all-inclusive vacation and roundtrip airfare for under $500.

The Dominican Republic

The beaches of the Dominican Republic are as beautiful as any in the Caribbean, and round-trip flights to the island can cost as little as $180 from Chicago or Miami. Choice Hotels’ Ascend collection includes two all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic with incredibly low nightly rates: Travel during the off seasons—spring and fall—and you can nab a stay at Emotions by Hodelpa Juan Dolio for as little as $100 per night, or at Emotions by Hodelpa Puerto Plata from $97 per night.

Both are beachfront properties with a variety of restaurants, as well as outdoor pools, in-room fridges, microwaves, an on-site fitness center, and a location that’s within easy distance from the airport and major attractions. Members of the Choice Privileges Rewards Program also earn points by staying at either resort.

Pick the right dates, book a few nights, and do the math, and you’ll have gotten yourself a Caribbean vacation that includes airfare, hotel, food, and beverages (yes, even the alcoholic kind) for under $500.

Jamaica

For travelers willing to travel in the off-season—between mid-April and mid-December—a four night stay at the beachfront Royal Decameron, an all-inclusive property on Montego Bay’s lively strip, and roundtrip airfare can cost as little $474 when booked as a package through CheapCaribbean.com.

The Royal Decameron is within easy walking distance of the city’s best hot spots, shops, and restaurants, though all your food is already taken care of on-site. To stick to your budget, you can also stick to admission-free attractions in Jamaica—including Negril Cliffs and Castleton Gardens—and use local buses and taxis instead of renting a car.

The Bahamas

While not a classic all-inclusive resort vacation, you’ll certainly find everything you need on board a cruise ship to the Bahamas. And if you’re setting sail from Florida, you can, without too much effort, find a four-night cruise for about the cost of a single hotel night in any major American city.

A quick Expedia search brings up plenty of three- and four-night sailings from Florida that start under $300 per person, while Cruises.com offers a similar list. Cruise prices typically include all the food you can eat, live entertainment, and calls at ports such as Nassau, Freeport, and, often, private islands belonging to that cruise line. We even found a 4-night cruise departing from Miami going to the Bahamas for $169 per person!

Cancún

Roundtrip flights to Cancún from southeastern airports like Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Miami can be found for as little as $183. You’ll find the best deals during off-season, mid-summer through autumn, and fares tend to be cheaper for travel on weekdays than weekends.

Riu Hotels & Resorts operates a series of all-inclusive resorts in Cancún, including the HOTEL RIU DUNAMAR 5* which has rooms available for as little as $137 per night. For those who would rather bundle their airfare and hotel, CheapCaribbean.com offers deals on several all-inclusive vacation packages with airfare that will get you to Cancún for under $500. This vacation package to Riviera Maya  includes three nights at the Bahia Principe Grand Coba, a 5-star hotel right by popular Playa Del Carmen complete with spa, casino, and beach access.

Other Top Spots for a Budget Vacation

If all-inclusive resorts aren’t your style, there are still plenty of other cheap tropical vacation spots to explore.  While additional expenses like food and excursions won’t be covered, you can still find round-trip airfare and lodging for under $500 at these destinations.

Puerto Rico

You can often find round-trip flights from Miami to San Juan for around $100—with some weekday options as low as $75—and flights from other parts of the east coast are usually under $200 thanks to budget airlines like Spirit.

Vacation rentals are the most affordable option for accommodations and you can find several cheap options that are right by the beach – like this two-bedroom condo that costs just $89 per night or this spacious studio with spa tub and patio for just $99 per night.

Stretch your budget even further by spending your days lounging on the gorgeous beaches around the island, all of which are free and open to the public, or seeking out fun free experiences in the capital city of San Juan, like the University of Puerto Rico’s Botanical Garden.

Oahu, Hawaii

Budget airlines like Southwest and Alaskan have made trips to Hawaii affordable. Several times a year, these airlines have sales that bring flights to Hawaii down to less than $300.  (Airfare sites such as Airfarewatchdog, SmarterTravel’s sister site, will alert you when fares drop.)

If you’re lucky enough to snag one of these low fares to Honolulu—or if you’re the lucky owner of a Southwest Companion Pass, which is actually fairly easy to get if you keep an eye out for associated credit card offers—Oahu has worthwhile low-budget lodgings that could help keep your tropical vacation total under $500. Vacation rentals will once again give you the best bang for your buck, with many highly rated options on Vrbo listed at less than $100 per night.

Once you’re there, Honolulu doesn’t have to be expensive since the city has plenty of cheap street food and affordable restaurants—Moose McGillycuddy’s is a favorite for low-cost breakfasts—and bus transportation is easy and much less expensive than renting a car. Plus, many of Oahu’s most worthwhile attractions are free or open for a nominal fee, including hiking up Diamond Head ($5 for entry, $10 to park a vehicle in the lot), paying tribute at Pearl Harbor’s USS Arizona (free), and sunbathing on Waikiki Beach (free).

Florida

Americans looking to keep their tropical vacations under $500 don’t actually have to leave the contiguous part of their continent to laze on the beach while shaded by palm trees. Orbitz’s list of vacation package deals under $499 usually offers some worthwhile all-inclusive deals to Orlando. Likewise, Travelocity has a dedicated Flight + Hotel Deals Under $400 page that includes various packages to Miami and Orlando, with stays at properties like the Westgate Vacation Villa Resort and the Boulan South Beach.

If you’d rather book airfare and lodging separately, check out Expedia’s round-trip fares to Orlando for less than $100. Couple that with affordable lodgings, like the family-friendly Coco Key Hotel and Waterpark Resort—just $132 for a room that sleeps four and only $19 more for a King Suite—and you’ve got yourself a memorable tropical trip with the kids that won’t break the bank.

Tips for Finding All-Inclusive Vacations with Airfare Under $500

Wherever you choose to book your affordable tropical vacation, one key strategy to keeping it under $500 is to understand what average prices look like for where you want to go—and to be ready to buy the minute you see fares that are listed well below that.

“If you’ve been watching for a good fare and you find one, don’t hesitate,” says Jeff Klee, the CEO of CheapAir. “When you go away for a few days or hours to consult with friends, or just continue to shop around, you may be surprised to find that the fare has disappeared while you mulled it over.”

One other tip for keeping vacations under $500, from Klee: “Flexibility is your friend. Unless your trip is for an event tied to a specific set of dates, often just shifting your search dates by a few days can offer big savings. Remember that mid-week flights—Tuesdays and Wednesdays—are usually a much better value than those on the weekend.”

With its endlessly green hills, dramatic cliffs, infectious music, and welcoming good nature, Ireland’s beauty makes it hard to beat as a vacation destination. Get off the typical tourist track and discover Ireland’s most scenic spots.

Dingle Peninsula

Consistently voted one of the most beautiful places on earth, the Dingle Peninsula wins the hearts of so many with its lush landscape, which includes narrow cliff-side roads, mountain ranges, and sandy beaches. Jutting 30 miles into the Atlantic Ocean from Ireland’s southwest coast, the peninsula offers unmatched sightseeing, surfing, swimming, and walking trails. The small market town and fishing port of Dingle provides a great place to listen to live music, grab a pint, and rest your head for the evening.

Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne

Located in Downhill Demesne near Castlerock, the Mussenden Temple is precipitously perched atop a 120-foot cliff edge overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Originally built in 1785 as a summer library, the temple forms part of the estate of Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol, and its dramatic setting offers unparalleled views of the surrounding area. Visitors are welcome to explore the 18th-century ruins of the mansion, take a cliff-side walk, stroll along the gardens, or learn about 17th-century life in one of Northern Ireland’s oldest surviving buildings, the Hezlett House.

Giant’s Causeway

The only World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland, the Giant’s Causeway is one of the world’s truly must-see destinations. Once said to have been built by giants, the 40,000 or so hexagonal columns were actually formed by volcanic eruptions. The legends that surround this area run deep, however, and visitors may get swept up in the myths of massive men and shipwrecks—Girona of the Spanish Armada foundered here in 1588—by walking among the stones.

The Burren

Patryk Kosmider/Shutterstock

Located in County Clare, the Burren is an explorers dream, featuring more than 100 square miles of natural limestone and offering ancient stone structures, grassy fields, caves, and jagged countryside. Among the top sites to see while visiting are the Poulnabrone Portal Dolmen, an ancient stone tomb dating between 2,000 and 2,500 B.C.E.; Leamaneh Castle, with its 15th-century residential tower and 17th-century fortified home; and Caherconnell Stone Fort, a nearly perfectly preserved structure dating back between 400 and 1200 C.E.

Glendalough

Glendalough is a village with a monastery in County Wicklow, Ireland. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by saint Kevin, hermit and priest, destroyed in 1398 by the English army.
JiriCastka/Shutterstock

About an hour south of Dublin, Glendalough, or Valley of the Two Lakes, houses the ruins of what was once one of the leading monastic settlements in Ireland. A hermit monk named Saint Kevin founded the monastery before his death in about 618. The settlement flourished for the next 600 years. Today, visitors can explore stone structures, churches, a cathedral, a round tower, and a cemetery.

Cliffs of Moher

One of the most photographed places in Ireland, the Cliffs of Moher ascend more than 700 feet above the water and cover nearly five miles. The dramatic cliffs are home to several species of sea birds, including the only mainland colony of Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, and Choughs. Visitors are welcome to climb the stairs leading to O’Brien’s Tower, which provides panoramic views. On a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the Aran Islands.

Ring of Kerry

Medieval ruins, sandy beaches, lakes, mountains, a lush forest, and a jagged coastline all call the Ring of Kerry home. Part of the Iveragh Peninsula, it’s 110 miles of pure beauty. The drive takes place in County Kerry in southwestern Ireland, and begins and ends in the town of Killarney, which makes a good base camp for a trip. It’s easy to travel the circuit in one day, but seeing some of the sites off the beaten path, such as Valentia Island and the Gaeltacht area around Portmagee, requires a bit more time.

Aran Islands

Located in Galway Bay, the three Aran Islands provide a perfect glimpse into some enduring Irish traditions—Gaelic is still spoken and most people get around by horse and buggy or bike. The largest of the three islands, Inis Mor, is the most well-known and offers the greatest amount of modern-day conveniences. Inis Meáin, or the middle island, is the least visited and clings proudly to its Irish cultural tradition. On a clear day, Inis Oírr, or the East Island, provides unparalleled views of the Cliffs of Moher.

Skellig Michael

Just eight miles off the coast of Portmagee and towering more than 700 feet above the water, you will find the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Skellig Michael, which houses a well-preserved sixth century monastic settlement. Visitors are welcome to walk in the footsteps of the monks who once inhabited this island by climbing the 670 steps leading to the now abandoned beehive-shaped huts. Puffins make the island their home in the late spring, while gannets consume every ledge on the nearby Little Skellig.

Cobh

Once briefly named “Queenstown” in honor of a visit from Queen Victoria in 1849, Cobh reverted to its original name in 1921. Located on the Great Island in Cork Harbor, the town’s streets climb a hill crowned by a cathedral overlooking the water. As the embarkation point, including the Titanic’s last port of call, to America, Cobh was the last glimpse of Ireland for many people.

Before you can experience authentic Spanish tapas, piazzas in Rome, or rooftop terraces in Prague, an important to-do list stands between you and your European vacation. The logistics involved in planning a trip to Europe may seem tedious or overwhelming, but the more prepared you are, the greater your chances of a successful trip that lives up to your expectations. That’s why it’s important to do a bang-up job creating an itinerary, arranging transportation, and tackling the brass tacks before you’re off to the Continent.

The following guide explains how to plan a trip to Europe in 10 simple steps—so you can spend less time worrying about your travel arrangements and more time staring at pictures of castles and men in kilts.

1. Get your documents in order.

If you don’t have a passport, it will take at least four to six weeks from the time of application for you to receive one. Expedited services—either through the State Department or an expeditor such as Travel Visa Pro—can trim the process down to a week or so, but it will cost you an additional fee, so it’s best to take care of this well before your trip.

Already have a passport? Check its expiration date. The last thing you need is to find out your passport has expired while you’re in line at airport check-in. Keep in mind that some countries require your passport to be valid for six months beyond your trip dates.

All car rental companies require drivers to have valid licenses in their home country, so you’ll also want to check the expiration date of your license. Some car rental companies also require an international driving permit for European rentals in addition to a valid driver’s license. For U.S. citizens, these can be obtained through the American Auto Association (AAA); in Canada, try the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).

Depending on length of stay, some destinations require valid visas in addition to passports; obtaining one is a complicated process that can take weeks even after you have been approved—so start early.

2. Establish a budget.

When planning a trip to Europe, establish a budget as early as possible—even before you know your destination, travel dates, or itinerary. Some destinations are generally cheaper than others, but there are ways to save everywhere: travel in the off-season, pick budget accommodations, plan a shorter trip. For example, London is an expensive city, but many travel providers and airlines offer affordable vacation packages to the city, and it’s not hard to find cheap air deals to London, especially during the winter.

Set your budget early on, and you’ll avoid any disappointment that could come from forging a fabulous itinerary, like two weeks in Switzerland during summer, and then discovering you can’t afford it. Travel budget apps such as TrabeePocket (iOS | Android) can help you keep track of your expenses once you start making bookings.

3. Pick a destination.

Now that you know how much you can spend, where do you want to go? If you’re like many travelers and you have a humongous list of places in Europe you want to visit, this could be tricky.

One strategy is to pick a particular site that’s on your must-see travel list, and plan your vacation around that. Last year I planned a trip to Ireland centered on an excursion to remote Skellig Michael Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site I’d dreamed of visiting. The excursion turned into an unforgettable two-week Emerald Isle road trip.

Another option is to pick someplace timely. Visit countries’ tourism websites and search for seasonal events like festivals or local holidays (which you may want to either avoid or join, depending on how you feel about crowds). Don’t forget to check the weather before you decide on your destination.

4. Create a rough itinerary.

So you want to go to France, eh? Don’t go ahead and buy a roundtrip flight to Paris and a hotel room—at least, not yet. Planning a European vacation takes a lot of prep work. You’ll want to sketch out a day-by-day itinerary of your perfect trip to France before you book a thing. Research sites and cities you really want to explore, and then figure out which ones you have the time and budget to get to.

Check out alternative ways to travel in Europe. If you want to see multiple countries or cities but are on a tight budget, you may want to consider a cruise (exchange rates are naught for U.S. citizens onboard American ships). If you’d rather not do the work of creating your own itinerary, continue booking a group tour with a company such as Intrepid Travel, G Adventures, Trafalgar, or Rick Steves’ Europe.

5. Book your airfare.

Because airfare will probably be the most expensive part of your trip, you’ll want to book it before anything else (car rental, hotel, etc.). This will allow you to be more flexible with your dates, which is a great way to save money on your flight. You can often spend less by flying on international discount airlines like Aer Lingus or Norwegian. Check multiple booking sites, including meta-search sites such as Skyscanner and traditional booking sites such as Expedia, to make sure you’re seeing a wide range of options. You can also set up fare alerts using Airfarewatchdog, SmarterTravel’s sister site, so you’ll be notified when the price of your flight drops.

Consider spicing up your trip with a layover in a different country. Icelandair has a long-running program that allows passengers flying elsewhere in Europe to take a free stopover in Reykjavik for up to seven nights.

6. Book your accommodations.

It’s time to go back to that rough itinerary you jotted down and fill in some places to sleep. As is the case with pretty much everything you book for your trip, the earlier you make arrangements, the better—especially during summer high season.

Sure, you can just book a room at the local Hilton and be done with it. But do a bit of research and you could discover some funky lodging that’s almost as exciting as the attractions you plan to visit. Keep your eyes open for historic castles, tiny bed and breakfasts, houseboats, eco-friendly hotels, or organic farms. Budget travelers take note: Vacation rentals, homestays, farm stays, and house-swapping are accommodation options that can be shockingly affordable … or even free.

As with airfare, you should shop around on multiple hotel sites to make sure you’re getting the best deal, and read reviews from past guests to see what the experience is like. TripAdvisor, Booking.com, and Hotels.com are a few good places to start.

7. Consider travel insurance.

There are several kinds of travel insurance: trip cancellation insurance, flight cancellation insurance, medical insurance, etc. The best time to buy insurance is right after you put down the major deposits on your trip, whether that entails airfare, a package, or prepaid hotels. Once you know how much money you’ve paid upfront, you can ensure your trip if you so choose. Many airlines and travel providers sell insurance that you can purchase along with your flight or tour package. Always, always read the fine print in your policy and compare it with other travel insurance policies before you make a purchase.

Check your medical insurance coverage to see if you’re covered overseas. If not, you may want to purchase supplemental medical insurance to cover situations like the cost of transportation back home for emergency care.

Reputable travel insurance companies to consider include Allianz Travel and Seven Corners.

8. Book local transportation and day tours.

When in Rome, ride the Metropolitana. Find out how the locals get around the destination to which you’re traveling and act accordingly. You won’t need a car rental in places like bike-friendly Amsterdam or London with its convenient underground Tube, unless you plan to go outside the city.

A car rental is your best bet if you’re traveling to locales that can’t be easily reached by rail or plane (such as the Irish countryside). Be mentally prepared to drive in a foreign country, which can be a frightening experience when faced with incomprehensible traffic signs, narrow streets, or sheep roadblocks.

To get from city to city or country to country, examine your rail options in comparison to routes and prices offered by European discount airlines like easyJet or Ryanair. Travelers embarking on extensive travel within Europe may save money by purchasing a rail pass from Rail Europe that permits unlimited train travel within a specified region.

Check out Viator to book day tours, especially if you want to take advantage of skip-the-line options.

9. Tackle last-minute logistics.

A few weeks before your departure date is the right time to start taking care of a number of key logistics: money, phone, house-sitter, pet-sitter.

Call your credit card companies to let them know you’ll be traveling abroad. While you’re at it, find out if you’re going to be charged a fee for using your card overseas. Research the locations of ATMs in your destination, especially if you’ll be relying on cash.

Does your cell phone plan allow you to make calls overseas, and if so, how much will it cost you? Many cell phone companies offer temporary international plans that you can purchase for the month you’re traveling. You might also want to consider a mobile hotspot device to keep you connected.

10. Pack.

Packing for Europe requires both different items and a different mindset in comparison to some other types of trips. After all, there’s no arguing that Parisians are more stylish than your typical North American tourist. Most of central and western Europe have milder climates throughout the year, but that doesn’t mean you won’t encounter rain or a heatwave. You should pack clothing that’s easy to layer, and always include a packable raincoat or travel umbrella in your suitcase when traveling to Europe. Think about how you’ll be carrying your money—pickpocketing schemes are more common abroad, so it’s important to carry your money and personal belongings securely. When researching your European destination of choice, consider the overall climate and time of year you’ll be traveling. Then, about a week before your trip check out the forecast, mobilize a packing list, and ensure your suitcase is in working condition and meets your airline’s size restrictions.

Pro packing tip: If you’re tight on packing space, invest in a packing cube set. They do wonders, especially if you’re stopping in multiple destinations as they make repacking a breeze.

Money can buy a lot of things, but in some cities, it seems to disappear almost as quickly as you can earn it. For budget-conscious travelers, a city’s notoriously high cost of living can prove a major deterrent in selecting it as their next vacation destination. Choosing a destination where your money stretches further can dramatically enhance a trip, affording you the opportunity to indulge in finer dining, luxurious accommodations, and a wealth of activities – all without draining your travel funds.

Knowing what the most expensive cities in the world, and the most expensive cities in the U.S. are, can help you make a smarter decision about where to travel to next. The EIU, the research and analysis division of The Economist Group, publishes a biannual list of the world’s most expensive cities, and the latest results are out.

To identify the priciest destinations, researchers compare more than 400 individual prices across more than 200 products and services in 173 cities. Costs for food, drink, clothing, rent, utility bills, transportation, and more are factored into the rankings.

Planning a domestic trip and want to avoid the most expensive cities in the US? New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco all made it into the list of the top ten most expensive cities in the world.

The Most Expensive Cities in the World

According to the EIU, “Many cities across the world continue to struggle with a cost-of-living crisis, which has sent prices soaring over the past two years.” This year’s study found that prices rose by 7.4 percent on average year over year.

1. Singapore (Tie with Switzerland)

Singapore skyline background

Topping the list is Singapore, a city-state renowned for its efficiency, cleanliness, and high standard of living. With a thriving economy and a limited land area, Singapore’s real estate market is one of the priciest in the world, which can drive up hotel prices as well. Transportation is especially expensive in Singapore as well, making it expensive to travel around.

Money-saving tip: Singapore is famous for its thriving street food scene. Eat at food stalls and markets in lieu of restaurants to save some cash.

1.  Zurich, Switzerland (Tie with Singapore)

Zurich, Switzerland. View of the historic city center with famous Fraumunster Church, on the Limmat river.

Inflation especially impacted Zurich, moving it from sixth place to tie with Singapore as the most expensive city in the world. This increase is partially attributed to the strength of the Swiss franc, along with higher-than-average prices for groceries, activities, and household goods.

Money-saving tip: Explore Zurich for free with “Züri rollt”, the city’s network of bike stations that offer complimentary rentals (you’ll just have to put down a deposit to ensure you bring the bike back.)

3. Geneva, Switzerland (Tie with New York City)

Geneva, another Swiss city, is known for its beautiful landscapes, world-class institutions, and high standard of living. However, this comes at a significant cost, that can again be attributed partially due to the Swiss franc’s strength. The costs of transportation, dining out, and recreational activities in Geneva can be quite steep, especially for travelers coming from a country with a weaker currency.

Money-saving tip: Purchase a Swiss Travel Pass to save money on transportation around the country.

3. New York City, United States (Tie with Geneva)

New York City is the most expensive city in the United States. However, things are getting a bit better—the city was tied for Zurich for the most expensive city in the world in 2022. Hotels are especially pricey in New York City, especially in popular neighborhoods in Manhattan.

Money-saving tip: To save money in New York City, head to the outer boroughs. Everything from hotels to meals are generally cheaper outside of Manhattan.

5. Hong Kong (Tie with Los Angeles)

With its towering skyscrapers and dense urban landscape, Hong Kong’s limited space has significantly driven up its cost of living. Housing and hotels are notoriously expensive. Add to that the costs of imported goods, transportation, and recreation, and it’s no wonder that Hong Kong consistently ranks as one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Money-saving tip: Hong Kong’s public transportation system is one of the safest and most efficient in the world. Get a Tourist Octopus card (a transit pass for visitors) to save money over taking taxis.

5. Los Angeles, United States (Tie with Hong Kong)

Los Angeles is the second most expensive city in the U.S. and the most expensive city on the West Coast. While often overshadowed by New York City in terms of cost of living, Los Angeles can also be extremely pricey. Public transportation is unreliable in the city, forcing visitors to rent a car or rely on costly rideshares or taxis.

Money-saving tip: Plan your trip around Los Angeles’ numerous free attractions. Several of the city’s museums, including The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), The Broad, and The Getty Center, are all free—as are all the beautiful beaches and boardwalks around the city.

7. Paris, France

Although Paris is one of the most notoriously expensive European cities, it’s only the seventh most priciest city in the world, thanks to the relative weakness of the euro. At the time of publication, the euro was nearly 1:1 with the dollar, helping out travelers from the U.S.

Money-saving tip: Look for ways to save on Paris’ most expensive attractions. The Louvre, for example, is free on the first Friday of every month (except for July and August) after 6 p.m.

8. Copenhagen, Denmark (Tie with Tel Aviv)

Prices in Denmark include a 25 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) that makes everything from food to alcohol feel incredibly expensive. As the capital city, prices in Copenhagen tend to be even higher than in the rest of the country.

Money-saving tip: Save your receipts! If you live outside the EU, you can claim back a portion of the VAT you paid on purchases over 300kr. Visitors can get a refund of between 10 percent and 19 percent of the VAT paid.

8. Tel Aviv, Israel (Tie with Copenhagen)

The EIU study notes “Our survey was conducted before the start of the Israel-Hamas war, which has affected the exchange rates in Israel and may have made it harder to procure some goods in Tel Aviv, thereby affecting prices.”

10. San Francisco, United States

San Francisco ranks among the most expensive cities in the U.S. Housing costs are a major factor, with hotel rates and short-term rental prices being exorbitant, even for modest accommodations. The city’s acclaimed restaurant scene means dining out can quickly become a budget-buster, with even casual meals at hip cafes and eateries running well over $20 per person. However, San Francisco is becoming more affordable, as it held the number eight spot on this list last year.

Money-saving tip: Check prices for flights into Oakland Airport (OAK) and San Francisco (SFO). Oakland is not far from San Francisco, and flights are often cheaper depending on your departure city.

Traffic, car rentals, and packed public transportation don’t make for a relaxing vacation. For your next trip, choose one of these U.S. cities that are a paradise for walkers. Pound the pavement in the concrete jungle in New York City or stroll along the water in San Francisco—some of America’s best destinations are also the most walkable.

We compiled data from Smart Growth America’s Foot Traffic Ahead rankings to determine the best walkable cities in the US. This non-profit group measures destination walkability in the 35 largest US metropolitan areas by analyzing walkability metrics to create an overall walkability score.

Michael Rodriguez, Director of Research at Smart Growth America, explains how they determine which city is the best for walking. “When we talk about walkability in Foot Traffic Ahead, we’re asking two questions: How many businesses and destinations are within walking distance, and are there sidewalks, crosswalks, and other safety features that make it easy to walk from Point A to Point B?”

Rodriguez says these walkable areas are some of the most popular tourist destinations. “Travelers can likely save on transportation costs by choosing to visit our top-ranking metros and staying in walkable areas.” After all, Rodriguez explains, “Few recreational tourists spend money to go stay in an empty business park on a weekend.”

The report found that the most walkable cities in the U.S. tend to be on the coasts, except for Chicago.

These are the best cities to walk in the US:

  1. New York, New York (Walkability Score: 100)

Since less than half of New York City residents own a car, it’s no surprise that The Big Apple is the most walkable city in America. The city block grid design makes it easy to find your way without getting lost (or being glued to your smartphone), and you’ll find endless choices for breaks to refuel on every block.

New York’s public transportation system is the best in the country, with buses, subways, trains, and ferries making the city even more accessible.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Little Italy, NoLita, and Bowery.

Best Walkable Hotel: Equinox Hotel New York

  1. Boston, Massachusetts (Walkability Score: 74.3)

Simply get lost along the charming streets of Boston, or add a little more purpose—and history—to your walk on the city’s famous Freedom Trail. Follow the line on the pavement for 2.5 miles and take a self-guided tour of Boston’s best neighborhoods and attractions. Or, download the Freedom Trail app to learn some of the city’s history while you walk.

Boston has a wide public transit network as well, with subways, buses, ferries, and commuter trains covering the city and surrounding suburbs.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Beacon Hill, Chinatown, and North End.

Best Walkable Hotel: Boston Park Plaza.

  1. Washington, DC (Walkability Score: 72.6)

The best way to see Washington, D.C.’s monuments is on foot. Start at the National Mall and work your way from the Washington Monument down to the Lincoln Memorial. The city’s diverse neighborhoods are all extremely walkable, but if you prefer a more peaceful walk, head to Rock Creek Park, an urban oasis with plenty of walking trails to explore.

When you get tired of walking, Washington D.C.’s extensive public transportation network makes it easy to get around without a car. The city’s subway system extends into two neighboring states (Virginia and Maryland).

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: U-Street, Dupont Circle, and Mount Vernon Square.

Best Walkable Hotel: Kimpton Hotel Monaco Washington DC

  1. Seattle, Washington (Walkability Score: 69.4)

Seattle is a hiker’s paradise with three stunning national parks in its backyard. Get in some warm-up walks around the city, exploring the lively Pike Place Market and the Space Needle. When your energy starts to flag, you can find an amazing cup of locally brewed coffee practically everywhere you turn in the city.

Seattle’s rapid transit network has improved significantly over the last few years, and now offers a choice of light rail, streetcar, monorail, and commuter rail for getting around the city.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, International District, and Belltown.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Charter Hotel

  1. Portland, Oregon (Walkability Score: 68.5)

Portlanders have a walking mindset that’s reflected in the design of their city. The Smart Growth America study states, “Metro Portland and Seattle share a Northwestern environmental commitment that encourages walkable urbanism.” Portland is not only an extremely walkable city but it’s also one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country, with a wide network of designated bike lanes and bike paths.

When it’s raining, buses, streetcars, and the light rail offer alternatives for navigating Portland.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: The Pearl, Old Town, and Downtown

  1. San Francisco, California (Walkability Score: 66.2)

Don’t let San Francisco’s hilly terrain deter you—it’s one of the most walkable cities in the US. Climb up high for incredible views of the bay, meander through the city’s many public parks, and definitely don’t miss a chance to walk across the famous Golden Gate Bridge.

When you’re ready for a ride, San Francisco’s web of buses, light rail trains, streetcars, and iconic cable cars covers all corners of the city.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Chinatown, Tenderloin, and Polk Gulch.

  1. Chicago, Illinois (Walkability Score: 65.9)

While the Windy City is at its most walkable in the spring, summer, and fall, you can still get around by foot even on the coldest winter days, thanks to Chicago’s Pedway. The Pedway is the city’s system of underground tunnels and overhead bridges connecting more than 40 blocks in downtown Chicago.

Chicago’s train system nicknamed the “L” for its elevated tracks, began operating in 1892, making it the oldest metro system in the country. There are over 140 stations throughout the city and suburbs to help you explore without a car.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: East Ukrainian Village, Wicker Park, and Near North Side.

Best Walkable Hotel: Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile

  1. Los Angeles, California (Walkability Score: 59)

Los Angeles is a famously car-centric city, with traffic-clogged freeways and ample parking lots, but that wasn’t always the case. Many neighborhoods within the city were originally designed as walkable urban enclaves.

The city is trying to change its dependence on automobiles and return to its walkable roots. “Los Angeles is the most densely populated metro in the U.S. and there is an understanding that they have reached the limit of freeway expansion as a part of their transportation system,” explains Smart Growth America.

The city recently invested $180 billion to expand and improve its regional transit system.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Santa Monica.

Best Walkable Hotel: DoubleTree by Hilton Los Angeles Downtown.

  1. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Walkability Score: 57.2)

Nicknamed the “City of Bridges” for the more than 400 bridges connecting communities across the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers, Pittsburgh is great for a scenic stroll by the water.

If you’re considering relocating, Pittsburgh earned high marks in the walkability study for housing affordability in its most pedestrian-friendly areas.

Regarding public transportation, Pittsburgh has 27 light rail stations, 700 buses, and boasts the oldest continuously operating funicular railway in the U.S.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Friendship, and Bloomfield.

Best Walkable Hotel: Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh Downtown.

  1. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Walkability Score: 55.1)

With all of the unique regional cuisine that Philadelphia has to offer (like cheesesteaks, hoagies, and water ice), you’ll be grateful for the city’s high walk score and the chance to walk off your indulgences. In addition to a vibrant downtown area, Philadelphia has more than 10,000 acres of public green space for when you need a nature fix.

Philadelphia is also home to the sixth-largest public transportation system in the U.S., the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), which includes trains, subways, trolleys, and buses.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West, and Avenue of the Arts South.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Notary Hotel

  1. Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minnesota (Walkability Score: 54.4)

There are over 40 colleges and universities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, and a dense cluster of walkable amenities have sprung up around these lively communities. Downtown St. Paul is undoubtedly the best neighborhood for walkers, with everything you could need located within just a few blocks.

Although the walk between the centers of Minneapolis and St. Paul would be long, a light rail connects the two.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Summit Hill, and Summit-University.

Best Walkable Hotel: Hyatt Place St. Paul/Downtown.

  1. Miami, Florida (Walkability Score: 54.2)

Avoid Miami traffic and explore this lively city on foot instead. Soak up the sun while you stroll along the 7-mile Miami Beach Boardwalk, or eat your way through the Calle Ocho neighborhood on a walking restaurant crawl while being serenaded by live music.

Miami has a 25-mile elevated rail system, Metrorail, that is a great way to get between Miami International Airport and Downtown Miami without needing a car. Once you’re downtown, hop aboard the Metromover, a free public bus traveling through the city’s most popular areas.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Wynwood-Edgewater, and Little Havana.

Best Walkable Hotel: 1 Hotel South Beach.

  1. Charlotte, North Carolina (Walkability Score: 51.7)

Although Charlotte is a fairly car-dependent city overall, it’s a great example of what the Smart Growth America study calls “walkable villages within a big city.” Head to Uptown Charlotte (the city’s center) to see this in action. This area is divided into four smaller neighborhoods or wards, which are very walkable.

Although Charlotte’s public transportation network isn’t as robust as others on this list, it does have buses and two short light rail lines.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Uptown, Plaza Midwood, and South End.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Ivey’s Hotel.

  1. Austin, Texas (Walkability Score: 50)

Austin is an oasis of walkability in Texas’ famously car-centric culture. Downtown Austin is by far the most walkable area in the city. Designed in a grid system, this compact city center is easy to navigate and features acclaimed restaurants, lively bars, and boutique shops on practically every block.

Although Austin’s public transportation is limited to its Capital Metro Bus System, the city is also reasonably bike-friendly if you want an alternative method for getting around than walking.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, West University, Bouldin Creek.

Best Walkable Hotel: Thompson Austin.

  1. Atlanta, Georgia (Walkability Score: 49.4)

Atlanta’s walkability really depends on what neighborhood you’re in. In Peachtree Center, in the heart of downtown, you’ll find many shopping and dining hubs within easy walking distance from one another. Once you get further from the city center, it’s more likely that you’ll need a car to get around.

The city is also prioritizing improving its bikeability, as evidenced by the Atlanta Beltline Trail, a 22-mile rail trail that encourages walking and biking.

Atlanta’s public transportation system, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) serves over 100,000 people daily across its network of buses and trains.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Peachtree Center, Sweet Auburn, Midtown.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Westin Peachtree Plaza.

The Least Walkable City in the US

If you’re wondering what least walkable city in the U.S. is, Las Vegas ranked last out of the 35 cities on the list. The study notes, “The only high-density walkable urbanism in the metro is along The Strip.” However, The Arts District and downtown are both reviving, so hopefully, Las Vegas will see improved walkability outside of The Strip.

It wasn’t long ago that U.S. citizens could travel to Mexico without a passport, but times have changed. As of 2010, a U.S. citizen must have a valid passport with enough blank pages for entry stamps or a valid passport card to visit the country. The documents you’ll need depends on whether you are entering by land, air, or sea—read on to find out everything you need to know about the passport requirements for your specific trip.

Mexico Passport Requirements for U.S. Citizens

Passport requirements for U.S. citizens entering Mexico vary whether traveling by air, land, or sea. Travelers may be required to obtain additional permits or authorizations depending on the means of entry. Regardless of how they arrive, all travelers must present either a passport book or card before they are permitted to enter Mexico. No visa is required for U.S. citizens staying up to 180 days.

Traveling to Mexico By Air

A valid passport book with enough blank pages for entry stamps is necessary for passengers arriving by air when visiting Mexico. You may also be asked to provide proof of economic means along with a return ticket home.

Previously, passengers arriving by air had to fill out a physical form called the Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) and pay a $35 fee, typically included in the airline surcharges. However, most Mexican airports have phased this out in favor of its digital counterpart, the Forma Migratoria Multiple Digital (FMMD). At certain airports, travelers may receive a stamp in their passport instead of a physical form. Pay close attention and follow the instructions given upon arrival.

Traveling to Mexico By Land

Travelers crossing a land border may use a passport book or passport card and, if they plan to remain within the roughly 12-mile “border zone” for the entirety of their trip, are not required to fill out an FMMD. However, travelers planning to go beyond that zone must complete a physical FMM at a National Institute of Immigration (Instituto Nacional de Migración or INM) location. This form is necessary when traveling in and leaving Mexico, so keep it in a safe spot along with your other travel documents.

Travelers driving their U.S.-registered vehicles beyond the border zone must also obtain a special vehicle permit. These permits can be obtained at the border, at a consulate, or ahead of time online through the government agency Banjercito. Drivers will be required to provide a valid vehicle registration and their FMM form, and to leave a deposit that will be refunded upon leaving the country.

Traveling to Mexico on a Cruise

Passport cards are valid for entry into Mexico by sea. However, it’s best to take your passport book with you on a cruise if your itinerary involves stops at international ports outside of Mexico or in case of an emergency.

If you are traveling on a closed-loop cruise—or a cruise that departs from and returns to the same U.S. port—all you need to re-enter the United States is an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL). An EDL contains an RFID chip with the owner’s biometric data and can be used as proof of citizenship. This is not the same as a REAL ID, which can be used to fly domestically but cannot be used to cross an international border. Currently, Enhanced Driver’s Licenses are only available to Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington residents.

Please note that your destination ports—including those in Mexico—still require the appropriate passport book or card and will not accept an EDL for entry.

Do I Need a Passport to Travel to Baja California?

Yes, travelers still need a passport to travel to Baja California and Baja California Sur. However, these areas, along with Sonora, are part of a “hassle-free” zone that waives the need for the above-mentioned vehicle and entry permits.

What Should I Do If I Lose My Passport in Mexico?

If you lose your passport while in Mexico, dial 078 from any phone for embassy and consulate information. From there, ask to speak to the Consular Section to report your documents missing and make an appointment to apply for an emergency passport.

Are there vaccine requirements for U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico?

No vaccinations are required. However, the CDC does provide a list of recommended vaccines for travelers.

What is the Difference Between a Passport Book and a Passport Card?

A U.S. passport book has 28 or 52 pages and is valid for ten years. It is required for air travel to all foreign countries. A U.S. passport card looks similar to a state ID and contains all personal information found in a traditional passport. It can be used for U.S. citizens traveling by land or sea to Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and certain countries in the Caribbean and is cheaper to apply for than a passport book.

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a new form of state identification that follows a uniform set of security standards across states and will be required to board domestic flights beginning in May 2025. Read our guide here to learn more about the REAL ID Act and what it means for your travel plans.

FAQ

Do all-inclusive resorts in the US include alcohol?

Many offer welcome cocktails or champagne, but for the rest of your stay, you will have to pay for alcoholic beverages. Some resorts have special packages you can book that will include alcohol. The resorts that include alcohol no matter how you book are:

  • The Clement Palo Alto
  • Sandpiper Bay Resort
  • The Ranch at Rock Creek
  • Bungalows Key Largo
  • Dunton Hot Springs

Is everything included at an all-inclusive resort?

Almost everything. Most include at least two meals (typically breakfast and dinner), your room, and most activities. Alcoholic beverages and spa treatments are usually an extra fee, as are specialized activities. Be sure to check with the resort you are booking at to see what exactly is included in your package.

Do you tip at an all inclusive resort?

Unless it is explicitly stated at the time of booking that tips are included, you should tip while staying at an all-inclusive resort, although it is not required.

Does all-inclusive mean unlimited drinks?

As mentioned above, some US all-inclusive resorts do include alcoholic beverages, but most only include water, soda, tea and coffee.

Is it wise to go to an all-inclusive resort?

For a lot of families and couples traveling, going to an all-inclusive resort is the best way to go, as that way, the trip is already paid for when you get there, and there are no surprises. It is easier to save for an all-inclusive stay since you know exactly what you will spend.

Are all-inclusive resorts worth it?

The short answer is yes, they are, if you are looking for a resort vacation. Having everything paid for, and all of your activities during your vacation in one place may be the perfect vacation for some people. The costs that can incur while you are on vacation are many, so knowing exactly what you are paying can be a relief to some, and make it well worth the money.

If the movie “The Hangover” has taught us just one lesson, it’s that you should be prepared for anything on a trip to Las Vegas—so make sure you pack accordingly. The key to a good Vegas packing list is versatility, as you never know what a trip to Sin City might have in store.

Whether you’ll be spending most of your time stuck in a conference center on a business trip, partying with bachelorettes, or gambling at the casino, it’s important to pack these essentials. This is the ultimate Las Vegas packing list.

When deciding what clothing to pack for Las Vegas, keep in mind the wide temperature swings you’re likely to experience during your trip. It may be hot outside during the day, but casinos, restaurants, and conference centers are often overly air-conditioned. Las Vegas is a desert city, so temperatures can drop significantly once the sun goes down. The answer: packing lots of layers.

No one wants to go on vacation only to be too afraid to leave their hotel. So, if you’re looking for the safest countries to travel to in 2024, plan your next trip around this list.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, a travel insurance provider, just released its annual list of the safest countries in the world. The rankings are created using an extensive methodology that includes surveying recent travelers, analyzing data from the Global Peace Index and the US State Department, and evaluating the GeoSure Global scores of the major cities in each country. These data points are used to calculate a weighted score reflecting each country’s safety.

Berkshire Hathaway issues an important caveat alongside its safest countries list: “These ratings aren’t predictive—that is, just because we say Canada is safe that doesn’t mean it will rank in the Top 10 in the future. Also, it doesn’t account for the possibility of natural disasters, like the Canadian wildfires.” Inclusion on the list also doesn’t mean that “every part of the company is as safe as any other,” says the company.

This is the ninth year that Berkshire Hathaway has released this study. Over the years, the company says the definition of a safe place to travel has changed over time. “A safe place was originally a place that’s largely free from terrorist activity. Then it became a place that was safe from disease outbreaks. Now it’s a place where all types of people can move about freely without discrimination or harassment.”

Canada rose from sixth place in 2023 to claim the title of the safest country to travel to in 2024. Canada was ranked highly for safety due to its low rates of violent crime. However, travelers are advised to watch out for wildfires, which have been a major issue in the country in recent years, causing diminished air quality and the potential for health problems.

The 15 Safest Countries to Travel to in 2024
