Puerto Rico

You can often find round-trip flights from Miami to San Juan for around $100—with some weekday options as low as $75—and flights from other parts of the east coast are usually under $200 thanks to budget airlines like Spirit. 

Vacation rentals are the most affordable option for accommodations and you can find several cheap options that are right by the beach – like this two-bedroom condo that costs just $89 per night or this spacious studio with spa tub and patio for just $99 per night.

Stretch your budget even further by spending your days lounging on the gorgeous beaches around the island, all of which are free and open to the public, or seeking out fun free experiences in the capital city of San Juan, like the University of Puerto Rico’s Botanical Garden.

Oahu, Hawaii

Glendalough

About an hour south of Dublin, Glendalough, or Valley of the Two Lakes, houses the ruins of what was once one of the leading monastic settlements in Ireland. A hermit monk named Saint Kevin founded the monastery before his death in about 618. The settlement flourished for the next 600 years. Today, visitors can explore stone structures, churches, a cathedral, a round tower, and a cemetery.

Cliffs of Moher

The following guide explains how to plan a trip to Europe in 10 simple steps—so you can spend less time worrying about your travel arrangements and more time staring at pictures of castles and men in kilts.

1. Get your documents in order.

If you don’t have a passport, it will take at least four to six weeks from the time of application for you to receive one. Expedited services—either through the State Department or an expeditor such as Travel Visa Pro—can trim the process down to a week or so, but it will cost you an additional fee, so it’s best to take care of this well before your trip.

Already have a passport? Check its expiration date. The last thing you need is to find out your passport has expired while you’re in line at airport check-in. Keep in mind that some countries require your passport to be valid for six months beyond your trip dates.

All car rental companies require drivers to have valid licenses in their home country, so you’ll also want to check the expiration date of your license. Some car rental companies also require an international driving permit for European rentals in addition to a valid driver’s license. For U.S. citizens, these can be obtained through the American Auto Association (AAA); in Canada, try the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).

Depending on length of stay, some destinations require valid visas in addition to passports; obtaining one is a complicated process that can take weeks even after you have been approved—so start early.

2. Establish a budget.

When planning a trip to Europe, establish a budget as early as possible—even before you know your destination, travel dates, or itinerary. Some destinations are generally cheaper than others, but there are ways to save everywhere: travel in the off-season, pick budget accommodations, plan a shorter trip. For example, London is an expensive city, but many travel providers and airlines offer affordable vacation packages to the city, and it’s not hard to find cheap air deals to London, especially during the winter.

Set your budget early on, and you’ll avoid any disappointment that could come from forging a fabulous itinerary, like two weeks in Switzerland during summer, and then discovering you can’t afford it. 3. Pick a destination.

Last year I planned a trip to Ireland centered on an excursion to remote Skellig Michael Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site I’d dreamed of visiting. The excursion turned into an unforgettable two-week Emerald Isle road trip.

Another option is to pick someplace timely. Visit countries’ tourism websites and search for seasonal events like festivals or local holidays (which you may want to either avoid or join, depending on how you feel about crowds). Don’t forget to check the weather before you decide on your destination.

4. Create a rough itinerary.

So you want to go to France, eh? Don’t go ahead and buy a roundtrip flight to Paris and a hotel room—at least, not yet. Planning a European vacation takes a lot of prep work. You’ll want to sketch out a day-by-day itinerary of your perfect trip to France before you book a thing. Research sites and cities you really want to explore, and then figure out which ones you have the time and budget to get to.

Check out alternative ways to travel in Europe. If you want to see multiple countries or cities but are on a tight budget, you may want to consider a cruise (exchange rates are naught for U.S. citizens onboard American ships). If you’d rather not do the work of creating your own itinerary, continue booking a group tour with a company such as Intrepid Travel, G Adventures, Trafalgar, or Rick Steves’ Europe.

5. Book your airfare.

Because airfare will probably be the most expensive part of your trip, you’ll want to book it before anything else (car rental, hotel, etc.). This will allow you to be more flexible with your dates, which is a great way to save money on your flight. You can often spend less by flying on international discount airlines like Aer Lingus or Norwegian. Check multiple booking sites, including meta-search sites such as Skyscanner and traditional booking sites such as Expedia, to make sure you’re seeing a wide range of options. You can also set up fare alerts using Airfarewatchdog, SmarterTravel’s sister site, so you’ll be notified when the price of your flight drops.

Consider spicing up your trip with a layover in a different country. Icelandair has a long-running program that allows passengers flying elsewhere in Europe to take a free stopover in Reykjavik for up to seven nights.

6. Book your accommodations.

It’s time to go back to that rough itinerary you jotted down and fill in some places to sleep. As is the case with pretty much everything you book for your trip, the earlier you make arrangements, the better—especially during summer high season.

Sure, you can just book a room at the local Hilton and be done with it. But do a bit of research and you could discover some funky lodging that’s almost as exciting as the attractions you plan to visit. Keep your eyes open for historic castles, tiny bed and breakfasts, houseboats, eco-friendly hotels, or organic farms. Budget travelers take note: Vacation rentals, homestays, farm stays, and house-swapping are accommodation options that can be shockingly affordable … or even free.

As with airfare, you should shop around on multiple hotel sites to make sure you’re getting the best deal, and read reviews from past guests to see what the experience is like. TripAdvisor, Booking.com, and Hotels.com are a few good places to start.

7. Consider travel insurance.

There are several kinds of travel insurance: trip cancellation insurance, flight cancellation insurance, medical insurance, etc. The best time to buy insurance is right after you put down the major deposits on your trip, whether that entails airfare, a package, or prepaid hotels. Once you know how much money you’ve paid upfront, you can ensure your trip if you so choose. Many airlines and travel providers sell insurance that you can purchase along with your flight or tour package. Always, always read the fine print in your policy and compare it with other travel insurance policies before you make a purchase.

Check your medical insurance coverage to see if you’re covered overseas. If not, you may want to purchase supplemental medical insurance to cover situations like the cost of transportation back home for emergency care.

8. Book local transportation and day tours.

When in Rome, ride the Metropolitana. Find out how the locals get around the destination to which you’re traveling and act accordingly. You won’t need a car rental in places like bike-friendly Amsterdam or London with its convenient underground Tube, unless you plan to go outside the city.

A car rental is your best bet if you’re traveling to locales that can’t be easily reached by rail or plane (such as the Irish countryside). Be mentally prepared to drive in a foreign country, which can be a frightening experience when faced with incomprehensible traffic signs, narrow streets, or sheep roadblocks.

To get from city to city or country to country, examine your rail options in comparison to routes and prices offered by European discount airlines like easyJet or Ryanair. 10. Pack.

Packing for Europe requires both different items and a different mindset in comparison to some other types of trips. After all, there’s no arguing that Parisians are more stylish than your typical North American tourist. Most of central and western Europe have milder climates throughout the year, but that doesn’t mean you won’t encounter rain or a heatwave. You should pack clothing that’s easy to layer, and always include a packable raincoat or travel umbrella in your suitcase when traveling to Europe. Think about how you’ll be carrying your money—pickpocketing schemes are more common abroad, so it’s important to carry your money and personal belongings securely. When researching your European destination of choice, consider the overall climate and time of year you’ll be traveling. The EIU, the research and analysis division of The Economist Group, publishes a biannual list of the world’s most expensive cities, and the latest results are out.

To identify the priciest destinations, researchers compare more than 400 individual prices across more than 200 products and services in 173 cities. Costs for food, drink, clothing, rent, utility bills, transportation, and more are factored into the rankings. 

Planning a domestic trip and want to avoid the most expensive cities in the US? New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco all made it into the list of the top ten most expensive cities in the world.

The Most Expensive Cities in the World

According to the EIU, “Many cities across the world continue to struggle with a cost-of-living crisis, which has sent prices soaring over the past two years.” This year’s study found that prices rose by 7.4 percent on average year over year. 

1. Singapore (Tie with Switzerland)

Topping the list is Singapore, a city-state renowned for its efficiency, cleanliness, and high standard of living. With a thriving economy and a limited land area, Singapore’s real estate market is one of the priciest in the world, which can drive up hotel prices as well. Transportation is especially expensive in Singapore as well, making it expensive to travel around. 

Money-saving tip: Singapore is famous for its thriving street food scene. Eat at food stalls and markets in lieu of restaurants to save some cash.

1.  Zurich, Switzerland (Tie with Singapore)

Inflation especially impacted Zurich, moving it from sixth place to tie with Singapore as the most expensive city in the world. This increase is partially attributed to the strength of the Swiss franc, along with higher-than-average prices for groceries, activities, and household goods. 

Money-saving tip: Explore Zurich for free with “Züri rollt”, the city’s network of bike stations that offer complimentary rentals (you’ll just have to put down a deposit to ensure you bring the bike back.)

3. Geneva, Switzerland (Tie with New York City)

Geneva, another Swiss city, is known for its beautiful landscapes, world-class institutions, and high standard of living. However, this comes at a significant cost, that can again be attributed partially due to the Swiss franc’s strength. The costs of transportation, dining out, and recreational activities in Geneva can be quite steep, especially for travelers coming from a country with a weaker currency.

Money-saving tip: Purchase a Swiss Travel Pass to save money on transportation around the country.

3. New York City, United States (Tie with Geneva)

New York City is the most expensive city in the United States. However, things are getting a bit better—the city was tied for Zurich for the most expensive city in the world in 2022. Hotels are especially pricey in New York City, especially in popular neighborhoods in Manhattan.

Money-saving tip: To save money in New York City, head to the outer boroughs. Everything from hotels to meals are generally cheaper outside of Manhattan.

5. Hong Kong (Tie with Los Angeles)

With its towering skyscrapers and dense urban landscape, Hong Kong’s limited space has significantly driven up its cost of living. Housing and hotels are notoriously expensive. Add to that the costs of imported goods, transportation, and recreation, and it’s no wonder that Hong Kong consistently ranks as one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Money-saving tip: Hong Kong’s public transportation system is one of the safest and most efficient in the world. Get a Tourist Octopus card (a transit pass for visitors) to save money over taking taxis. 

5. Los Angeles, United States (Tie with Hong Kong)

Los Angeles is the second most expensive city in the U.S. and the most expensive city on the West Coast. While often overshadowed by New York City in terms of cost of living, Los Angeles can also be extremely pricey. Public transportation is unreliable in the city, forcing visitors to rent a car or rely on costly rideshares or taxis.  

Money-saving tip: Plan your trip around Los Angeles’ numerous free attractions. Several of the city’s museums, including The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), The Broad, and The Getty Center, are all free—as are all the beautiful beaches and boardwalks around the city. 

7. Paris, France

Although Paris is one of the most notoriously expensive European cities, it’s only the seventh most priciest city in the world, thanks to the relative weakness of the euro. At the time of publication, the euro was nearly 1:1 with the dollar, helping out travelers from the U.S.

Money-saving tip: Look for ways to save on Paris’ most expensive attractions. The Louvre, for example, is free on the first Friday of every month (except for July and August) after 6 p.m.

8. Copenhagen, Denmark (Tie with Tel Aviv)

Prices in Denmark include a 25 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) that makes everything from food to alcohol feel incredibly expensive. As the capital city, prices in Copenhagen tend to be even higher than in the rest of the country. 

Money-saving tip: Save your receipts! If you live outside the EU, you can claim back a portion of the VAT you paid on purchases over 300kr. Visitors can get a refund of between 10 percent and 19 percent of the VAT paid. 

8. Tel Aviv, Israel (Tie with Copenhagen)

The EIU study notes “Our survey was conducted before the start of the Israel-Hamas war, which has affected the exchange rates in Israel and may have made it harder to procure some goods in Tel Aviv, thereby affecting prices.”

10. San Francisco, United States

San Francisco ranks among the most expensive cities in the U.S. Housing costs are a major factor, with hotel rates and short-term rental prices being exorbitant, even for modest accommodations. We compiled data from Smart Growth America’s Foot Traffic Ahead rankings to determine the best walkable cities in the US. This non-profit group measures destination walkability in the 35 largest US metropolitan areas by analyzing walkability metrics to create an overall walkability score. 

Michael Rodriguez, Director of Research at Smart Growth America, explains how they determine which city is the best for walking. “When we talk about walkability in Foot Traffic Ahead, we’re asking two questions: How many businesses and destinations are within walking distance, and are there sidewalks, crosswalks, and other safety features that make it easy to walk from Point A to Point B?”

Rodriguez says these walkable areas are some of the most popular tourist destinations. “Travelers can likely save on transportation costs by choosing to visit our top-ranking metros and staying in walkable areas.” After all, Rodriguez explains, “Few recreational tourists spend money to go stay in an empty business park on a weekend.”

The report found that the most walkable cities in the U.S. tend to be on the coasts, except for Chicago. 

These are the best cities to walk in the US:

1. New York, New York (Walkability Score: 100)

Since less than half of New York City residents own a car, it’s no surprise that The Big Apple is the most walkable city in America. The city block grid design makes it easy to find your way without getting lost (or being glued to your smartphone), and you’ll find endless choices for breaks to refuel on every block. 

New York’s public transportation system is the best in the country, with buses, subways, trains, and ferries making the city even more accessible.

The city is trying to change its dependence on automobiles and return to its walkable roots. “Los Angeles is the most densely populated metro in the U.S. and there is an understanding that they have reached the limit of freeway expansion as a part of their transportation system,” explains Smart Growth America.

The city recently invested $180 billion to expand and improve its regional transit system.

This area is divided into four smaller neighborhoods or wards, which are very walkable. 

Although Charlotte’s public transportation network isn’t as robust as others on this list, it does have buses and two short light rail lines.

Although Austin’s public transportation is limited to its Capital Metro Bus System, the city is also reasonably bike-friendly if you want an alternative method for getting around than walking.

Atlanta’s walkability really depends on what neighborhood you’re in. Once you get further from the city center, it’s more likely that you’ll need a car to get around.

The city is also prioritizing improving its bikeability, as evidenced by the Atlanta Beltline Trail, a 22-mile rail trail that encourages walking and biking. 

Atlanta’s public transportation system, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) serves over 100,000 people daily across its network of buses and trains.

Mexico Passport Requirements for U.S. Citizens

Passport requirements for U.S. citizens entering Mexico vary whether traveling by air, land, or sea. Travelers may be required to obtain additional permits or authorizations depending on the means of entry. Regardless of how they arrive, all travelers must present either a passport book or card before they are permitted to enter Mexico. No visa is required for U.S. citizens staying up to 180 days.

Traveling to Mexico By Air

A valid passport book with enough blank pages for entry stamps is necessary for passengers arriving by air when visiting Mexico. You may also be asked to provide proof of economic means along with a return ticket home.

Previously, passengers arriving by air had to fill out a physical form called the Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) and pay a $35 fee, typically included in the airline surcharges. However, most Mexican airports have phased this out in favor of its digital counterpart, the Forma Migratoria Multiple Digital (FMMD). At certain airports, travelers may receive a stamp in their passport instead of a physical form. Pay close attention and follow the instructions given upon arrival. 

Traveling to Mexico By Land

Travelers crossing a land border may use a passport book or passport card and, if they plan to remain within the roughly 12-mile “border zone” for the entirety of their trip, are not required to fill out an FMMD. However, travelers planning to go beyond that zone must complete a physical FMM at a National Institute of Immigration (Instituto Nacional de Migración or INM) location. This form is necessary when traveling in and leaving Mexico, so keep it in a safe spot along with your other travel documents. 

Travelers driving their U.S.-registered vehicles beyond the border zone must also obtain a special vehicle permit. These permits can be obtained at the border, at a consulate, or ahead of time online through the government agency Banjercito. Drivers will be required to provide a valid vehicle registration and their FMM form, and to leave a deposit that will be refunded upon leaving the country.

Traveling to Mexico on a Cruise

Passport cards are valid for entry into Mexico by sea. However, it’s best to take your passport book with you on a cruise if your itinerary involves stops at international ports outside of Mexico or in case of an emergency. 

If you are traveling on a closed-loop cruise—or a cruise that departs from and returns to the same U.S. port—all you need to re-enter the United States is an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL). An EDL contains an RFID chip with the owner’s biometric data and can be used as proof of citizenship. This is not the same as a REAL ID, which can be used to fly domestically but cannot be used to cross an international border. Currently, Enhanced Driver’s Licenses are only available to Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington residents.

Please note that your destination ports—including those in Mexico—still require the appropriate passport book or card and will not accept an EDL for entry.

Yes, travelers still need a passport to travel to Baja California and Baja California Sur. However, these areas, along with Sonora, are part of a “hassle-free” zone that waives the need for the above-mentioned vehicle and entry permits.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, a travel insurance provider, just released its annual list of the safest countries in the world. The rankings are created using an extensive methodology that includes surveying recent travelers, analyzing data from the Global Peace Index and the US State Department, and evaluating the GeoSure Global scores of the major cities in each country. These data points are used to calculate a weighted score reflecting each country’s safety. 

Berkshire Hathaway issues an important caveat alongside its safest countries list: “These ratings aren’t predictive—that is, just because we say Canada is safe that doesn’t mean it will rank in the Top 10 in the future. Also, it doesn’t account for the possibility of natural disasters, like the Canadian wildfires.” Inclusion on the list also doesn’t mean that “every part of the company is as safe as any other,” says the company. 

This is the ninth year that Berkshire Hathaway has released this study. Over the years, the company says the definition of a safe place to travel has changed over time. “A safe place was originally a place that’s largely free from terrorist activity. Then it became a place that was safe from disease outbreaks. Now it’s a place where all types of people can move about freely without discrimination or harassment.”

Canada rose from sixth place in 2023 to claim the title of the safest country to travel to in 2024. Canada was ranked highly for safety due to its low rates of violent crime. However, travelers are advised to watch out for wildfires, which have been a major issue in the country in recent years, causing diminished air quality and the potential for health problems.
