It's Too Expensive

We know where this one comes from: London's cost of living is pricey, and the exchange rate is unfavorable for most visitors. But that doesn't mean there aren't budget-friendly spots that can suit low-cost needs. Some of London's greatest sights are free.

London's free museums are among the most impressive in the world—the National Gallery's Van Gogh and Velazquez paintings, the Tate Modern's Picasso and Kandinsky pieces, and the Museum of London's priceless prehistoric artifacts. Strolling the gorgeous gardens of St. James' Park and peering past the gates of Buckingham Palace also won't cost a thing, and the city has a myriad of cheap hostels and near-free house-sitting options.

Don't pass up London because you think it'll break the bank. With a little digging, you can get by just fine on a modest budget.

The Weather Is Awful

Bear with me on this one. Sure, England is often cloudy. It's rare that you'll find an entirely clear day, or that sunshine will dominate your visit. However, London weather stays relatively mild despite the clouds.

It rarely reaches freezing temperatures in the winter, and summers typically stay below 80 degrees (Farenheit). If you're visiting from Canada or the northern U.S., the weather is likely to be less extreme than where you came from, and you may get lucky enough to see sunshine.

The Food Is Bad

Any claims of awful food in London have to be a tall tale, or the source must be eating at all the wrong places. Those who spread this rumor may not be too keen on no-frill British cuisine (meat pies and Yorkshire pudding aren't for every one) but the U.K.'s capital is an incredibly diverse and eclectic place, and its dining options reflect that.

While you're sure to pig out on fish and chips and afternoon tea sandwiches, you also shouldn't miss out on the international cuisine. Authentic Indian food at Trishna, the fusion dishes at Duck and Waffle, and free samples at Borough Market are sure to challenge this myth.

Britons Are Rude

The English are known to be somewhat cold in comparison to other cultures, but that doesn't mean they're rude. Depending on where you're from, you might consider the fast-paced way of life and bluntness that Britons display somewhat strange. Americans tend to sugar-coat things more, and it's easy to misread a Brit's dry sense of humor. However, you're unlikely to experience any harsh words from locals if you're being friendly.

Traveling alone in London recently, I often bothered strangers to take my photo or recommend a restaurant—none of them ignored me or declined to help me out. England is culturally similar to the U.S., so most of the same etiquette rules apply. But when in doubt, it doesn't hurt to opt for a handshake rather than a hug.

It's Too Big

London is massive, but it's not impossible to see everything on your list if you know the best ways to get around. Driving around the traffic-clogged city can make your journey seem farther than it is, so the Tube should be your go-to for timely transportation.

Don't underestimate your ability to walk from one attraction to the next. For example, Southbank is home to Borough Market, the Tate Modern, and Shakespeare's Globe, all within just a few blocks of each other. Rather than jumping in a cab, map your day out so you can prioritize walking and underground travel.

The Locals Hate Tourists

Sure, the English won't like your accent as much as you'll probably enjoy theirs—but that doesn't mean they'll be revolted by it. There are a lot of ex-pats in London (American and otherwise), so Londoners are used to hearing an array of accents, and probably won't assume you're a tourist just because you sound different. Even if they do know you're visiting, it's unlikely to affect how they feel about you.
