Warm Weather Winter Destinations

Hawaii

Hawaii is great any time of year, but the winter is perfect because it isn’t too hot. Temperatures range from the high 70s-low 80s, meaning you’ll still get plenty of beach time while you are there. And while this is their rainiest season, it shouldn’t ruin your vacation.

Recommended Hotel: Montage Kapalua Bay

Sydney

rudi1976 | Adobe Stock

It’s summer in Sydney during the winter in the U.S., so if you really hate the winter, heading down under is a great option. Of course, that means places may be busier than if you head to the northern hemisphere, but it shouldn’t stop you. It doesn’t get too hot, and you’ll have attractions like the Sydney Opera House, the Taronga Zoo, and water sports.

Recommended Hotel: Little National Hotel Sydney

St. Lucia

Simon Dannhauer | Adobe Stock

The rainy season ends at the end of December, and the temperature is in the 80s in the winter months, so you can pack your sunglasses, sunscreen, bathing suit, and enjoy a luxurious beach vacation in St. Lucia.

Recommended Hotel: Zoetry Marigot Bay

Costa Rica

Galyna Andrushko | Adobe Stock

Costa Rica can get busy during the winter months, and for good reason: the weather is glorious. So if you don’t mind crowds along with warm weather, it’s the perfect time to visit. Imagine zip-lining, hiking, or soaking in natural hot springs all while your friends and family at home are shoveling snow.

Recommended Hotel: The Springs Resort and Spa at Arenal

US Virgin Islands

Kyle | Adobe Stock

To get away to warm weather without your passport, try the US Virgin Islands. You can laze on the beach, try your hand at water sports, and explore the island’s rich history.

Recommended Hotel: The Westin Beach Resort & Spa at Frenchman’s Reef

Maldives

Romolo Tavani | Adobe Stock

Winter is the Maldives driest season, perfect for a getaway when things get bleak at home. You will keep yourself busy with scuba diving, laying on the beach, exploring a shipwreck and more.

Recommended Hotel: Joy Island

Azores

creativefamily | Adobe Stock

While the Azores aren’t technically a warm-weather destination (the high for winter is in the sixties), it doesn’t snow there, so this makes the warm-weather list. It’s off-peak, so the crowds are smaller. You’ll find hot springs, quaint villages, waterfalls, and dolphin-watching trips to keep you busy.

Recommended Hotel: Grand Hotel Açores Atlântico

Hanoi, Vietnam

creativefamily | Adobe Stock

While January is the coldest month in Hanoi, it is still likely going to be warmer than if you live in the Northern US—the highs are about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. There is loads of hiking to be found, you can walk around Hoan Kiem Lake or West Lake, participate in Vietnamese Tet holiday, which typically takes place at the end of January or in February. You, or course will hae to try out an egg coffee, which was first served in Hanoi in 1946 at Cafe Giang.

Recommended Hotel: May De Ville Premier Hotel & Spa

Cold Weather Winter Destinations

Copenhagen

Roman Babakin | Adobe Stock

For a real winter european experience, Copenhagen is a perfect choice. Quaint, with snow and chilly weather, you will get an idyllic winter wonderland when you visit Copenhagen. You can visit museums, go ice skating, wander Tivoli Gardens

Recommended Hotel: Fiftyseven Hotel Copenhagen

Paris

Ekaterina Pokrovsky | Adobe Stock

There is something magical about Europe in the winter, and Paris might just be the epicenter of that thought. So pack your warmest clothes, and get ready for shopping, museums, and delicious food.

Recommended Hotel: Castille Paris – Starhotels Collezione

Switzerland

martinhosmat083 | Adobe Stock

A skier’s paradise, an instagrammers dream, an apres-ski loving wine drinker- whoever you are, Switzerland is for you during winter months. Don’t miss the Glacier Express, Zermatt for skiing, or Interlaken for every winter sport you can imagine: skiing, paragliding, and even winter kayaking.

Recommended Hotel: Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa

British Columbia, Canada

Barrie | Adobe Stock

British Columbia has something for everyone during the winter months: skiing, city life, hot springs, shopping – no matter what kind of cold weather vacation you are looking for, British Columbia can assist. Whistler is the spot for skiers, while Vancouver has hiking, city shopping, and even a gondola ride for spectacular views. You can warm your muscles at the hot springs found throughout the province, like Harrison Lake & Hot Springs, Hot Springs Cove and Fairmont Hot Springs

Recommended Hotel: Fairmont Hot Springs

Yellowstone

The Sturdy Table | Adobe Stock

Yellowstone gets busy during warmer months, so why not explore the national park in the winter, when it’s quieter, yet just as beautiful. You’ll be able to see the park via skiing, snowshoeing, a snowmobile tour, or a snow coach. And don’t worry, Old Faithful still erupts during winter months, so you won’t miss that during your winter visit.

Recommended Hotel: Old Faithful Inn

Dolomites, Italy

fotoluk1983 | Adobe Stock

Another ski-lovers paradise, Dolomites, located on the Alps,  has some of the best skiing in the world. At the resorts you’ll find black runs, family slopes, floodlit slopes and snow parks- everything  you need for the perfect winter getaway.

Recommended Hotel: Mirabell Dolomites Hotel

Sometimes, the promise of a warm-weather vacation is all you need to get you through those cold and snowy winter days. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel far or spend thousands on long flights to find sunshine and hot temperatures. While the rest of the country shivers through frigid temperatures, these domestic destinations are practically tropical, even in the winter.

Personal finance site WalletHub crunched the data to find out where you should head for a warm-weather vacation in The United States this winter. The study compared 69 of the most populated U.S. metropolitan areas across six categories: travel costs and hassles, local costs, attractions, weather, activities, and safety.

To be considered a warm winter destination as part of the survey, cities must have an average December temperature of 57 degrees or higher.

These are the 10 best warm-weather winter destinations in The United States.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Keep pool party season going through the winter at Stadium Swim at the Circa Hotel in Las Vegas. All six pools are heated to around 100 degrees, so you can pretend summer never left.

Aside from the beautiful weather, December is a great time to visit Las Vegas as the casinos go all out with holiday decorations.

Average December high temperature: 60 degrees

San Diego, California

Experience all the fun winter activities without the frigid temperatures in San Diego. Despite the warm temperatures, you can still find outdoor skating rinks where you can spin around atop faux ice right on the beach.

Average December high temperature: 66 degrees

Austin, Texas

With almost 13 miles of trails, the Barton Creek Greenbelt is at its best during the winter months, when temperatures are perfect for hiking—not too cold or hot. If the nighttime temperatures are too chilly for your liking, simply head to one of Austin’s many restaurants with heated patios to warm up.

Average December high temperature: 63 degrees.

Dallas, Texas

Dallas might not be the first destination that you think of for cycling, but the city has four major off-road bike paths to explore. Rent a bike and enjoy riding around the city when the sun isn’t relentless.

After, head to one of the city’s many (heated) rooftop bars to sip a drink and watch the sunset.

Average December high temperature: 58 degrees.

San Antonio, Texas

Strolling San Antonio’s famous River Walk is lovely any time of the year, but it’s especially magical November through January when over 100,000 lights bedeck the trees lining the path.

Average December high temperature: 64 degrees.

Charleston, South Carolina

Throw your New Year’s resolutions out the window if you plan to visit Charleston in the winter because this is the city’s prime season for culinary festivals. During the end of January, the Charleston Wine Festival tempts people out of Dry January.

Or, visit the first weekend in March, when the Charleston Wine + Food Festival offers the chance to sample some of the region’s best cuisine.

Average December high temperature: 61 degrees.

San Francisco, California

If you’re hoping to go whale-watching on your trip to San Francisco, winter is the best time to go. From December to May, you’ll have the best chance of seeing the most variety of whale species. Don’t worry—whale-watching boats will have heated cabins.

Average December high temperature: 58 degrees.

Houston, Texas

If Houston’s mild winter weather isn’t hot enough for you, spice things up at the annual Hops n’ Hot Sauce Festival, held on January 20. The event will have lots of local craft beer to sample, along with some of the city’s best food trucks—so you can get a taste of Houston’s finest all in one place.

Average December high temperature: 63 degrees.

Phoenix, Arizona

With average summer temperatures in Phoenix reaching over 100 degrees, winter is one of the most pleasant times to visit. The balmy 68-degree average temperature makes it much more comfortable to explore the Sonoran Desert or hike Camelback Mountain.

Average December high temperature: 68 degrees.

Los Angeles, California

Chillier ocean temperatures don’t deter California surfers, who wear wetsuits and hit the waves. Even if you don’t want to venture in, the winter can be a nice time to simply sit on the sand and soak up some sunshine in Los Angeles.

Average December high temperature: 68 degrees.

When seasoned travelers visit Greece, they frequently plan their trip to include the Greek Islands. These islands are renowned for their breathtaking scenery.  However, despite their shared Mediterranean climate, not all islands are equal. Here are some traveler-inspired recommendations for the five Greek islands to avoid – and the five best to see.

The Five Greek Islands to Avoid

1. Kos

Boats in a port on the Greek island of Kos on a clear sunny day

The beaches at Kos seem to stretch forever. Unfortunately, so do the lines to get there. Tourists line the beaches, making for a rather unpleasant experience. Even historical sites like Neratzia Castle have become overrun. The same fate may decrease the pleasure you’d expect when visiting the ancient Agoran ruins. While the scenery may be stunning, the crowds will make you wish you had picked a different island.

2. Zakynthos

Zakynthos’s greatest draw is, ironically, also its most significant drawback. Internationally known for relaxing beaches, it draws an overload of tourists. The “shipwreck beach” is a “must-see” photo op – so it’s also too chaotic to enjoy.

Religious pilgrims seeking prayer may journey to Agios Georgios Krimnon. Unfortunately, many tourists don’t respect the spiritual nature., and their irreverence can make it difficult to enjoy your visit.

3. Rhodes

The village of Lindos and the adjacent Acropolis on the Greek island of Rhodes

Many have heard of the Colossus at Rhodes. The island of Rhodes was recently reported to be overcrowded and overpriced. Students of history will flock to Old Town for its historic buildings- but may end up disappointed at its poorly tended paths.

Some historical attractions, like the Street of Knights, are still worth visiting most of the year. However, summer unleashes too many tourists. This subdues those inspirational sights with too many crowds. A subpar visit can tarnish even sacred landmarks like the Suleymaniye Mosque

4. Santorini

White and blue houses on the coastline of the Greek island of Santorini
Patryk Kosmider | Adobe Stock

Known for tempestuous volcanoes and spellbinding sunsets, Santorini should be a paradise for vacationers. The island hosted two million tourists last year. However, reviewers reported dirty beaches and overcrowded nightclubs.

Past visitors have also reported too many cruise ships clogging the harbors. Even mesmerizing red and black lava pebbles on the beach can’t make up for crowds of boisterous tourists. While the Santorini Caldera (cavern) should be a place for reflection, it’s allegedly too unkempt.

5. Mykonos

Although Mykonos is known for its amazing beaches, thriving nightlife, and unique downtown architecture, it’s unanimously cited as the least enjoyable Greek Isle for visitors. Reviewers reported crowded beaches and overpriced snacks. One beach’s gift shop listed the price of two sunbeds and an umbrella at over 135 euros.

It’s easy to see why Mykonos is so famous. Its Cycladic ivory white homes make it a perfect setting for tranquility. Yet, streams of bargain-hungry tourists rob the city of its potential charm.

The Five Greek Islands to Visit Instead

5. Corfu

Corfu is known for its lively nightlife. Like other famous Ionian islands, there are plenty of beaches, including Porto Timoni. The most famous beach is the enchanting Canal d’Amour (channel of love), surrounded by its sandstone cliffs.

Many visitors to Corfu enjoy renting a boat, as speeding along the Ionian coast is a unique way to enjoy the view. You can learn about beekeeping and savor the sweetness of fresh honey from “Mr. Honey” – a veteran apiarist at the Corfu Honey Farm.

4. Crete

Agios Nikolaos City on the Greek island of Crete

Crete is the largest island in Greece. It offers euphoric scenery and hiking trails. Its most famous beach is Balos Lagoon, the perfect spot to relax in the sun. History lovers can trek through the ruins of the Minoan settlement, where can gaze upon rows of crumbling castles. Stand transfixed at the 18th-century Agios Nikolaos, where you’ll learn about the Greek pioneers of faith.

3. Skiathos

Skiathos is considered the most cosmopolitan of the Sporades islands. Beaches are the island’s best feature, with over 60 beaches framed by dark pine trees. Lalari, one of the famous Skiathos beaches, boasts silvery pebbles and turquoise waters.

Head away from the beaches to the Evangelistria Monastery, built in 1794. The monastery sheltered fighters in the War of Greek Independence. The monks will invite you to sample fresh olive oil and delectable wine.

2. Lefkada

People enjoying the beach and coastline on the Greek island of Lefkada

Lefkada is another one of the Ionian islands, and it’s famed for beaches with soft sand and soothing water. The coast of Lefkada resembles a parade of beaches. For beach lovers, Porto Katsiki is the most popular beach featuring stunning cliffs.

When you arrive in Lefkada, it’s impossible not to notice the remains of the 13th-century castle Agra Mavra. Wander through the town to see endless cafés and shops. At sunset, tryst with your sweetie at the quaint wooden bridge

1. Kefalonia

Kefalonia, the largest Ionian Island, is full of mountains and bright blue waters, and visitors praise its tranquility. A trek up Mount Ainos will reward you with a breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea.  Wine lovers won’t want to miss Venture Island,  home of Kefalonia’s white robola wine.

“One man’s trash is another’s treasure,” says the old adage, and this may be truest of all for lovers of sea glass.

An unusually attractive consequence of littering, sea glass is created when bottles, ship lights, and other pieces of glass are discarded in the ocean. Tossed around and broken apart by the currents, the edges and surfaces become frosty and pitted from the saline content of the water. In time, these broken bits and pieces are washed ashore and become a hot commodity for sea glass seekers, who incorporate them into art pieces, jewelry, and home décor.

Some colors are more sought after than others; reds, purples, and oranges are particularly difficult to find. And of course, the glass comes in a variety of shapes and sizes ranging from identifiable bottlenecks to tiny round marbles. What you find will depend on the location you’re hunting in—a beach near an old beer brewery will offer different sea glass than one near an art glass factory.

The sea glass community used to keep the knowledge of where to find their precious treasure a close secret. But nowadays the community is large and thriving online, and the information is shared freely around the world. Here’s a list of some of the best places in the world to find sea glass.

United Kingdom and Ireland

Path leading to Seaham Beach
Path leading to Seaham Beach | Anthony | Adobe StockAnthony | Adobe Stock

The coastlines of the United Kingdom and Ireland have a reputation for being the place to find sea glass. Seaham Beach may be the most famous of these; according to By The Sea jewelry, sea glass here originated not only from nearby glasswork factories such as Londonderry Bottleworks, but also Hartley Wood & Co, a specialty art glass manufacturer. As a result, sea glass hunters can find not only the typical bottle-colored fragments of glass, but also unusual multicolored streaked glass pieces.

The region of Devon is well-known for Devonshire cream teas, Agatha Christie, and, uniquely, the county’s two sets of English coastlines, north and south. Brooding, rocky Bovisand Beach on the southern coastline is a sea glass lover’s paradise. Hunters can sift through the sand on the beach or explore the many tide pools to find little bits of treasure.

In Ireland, travel up along the Wild Atlantic Way to Lisfannon Beach in County Donegal. This is a very long drive to a very remote destination indeed, unless you’re already visiting Northern Ireland. However, it is a beautifully moody stretch of beach with little clutches of glass gems tucked in amongst the rocks. By virtue of its remote location, tourist traffic can be lower here, so treasure hauls can border on epic in size.

Scotland and Wales are not to be left out, either. Picturesque fishing region East Neuk in Fife is awash in sea glass and lovely bits of painted pottery. Wales’ Conwy Morfa Beach, thanks to a nearby Victorian-era dumping site, often yields some truly vintage pieces of glass in an array of colors.

The United States of America

Beach at Crystal Cove State Park

Glass Beach at Fort Bragg is probably one of the most famous sea glass beaches in California, with lots of colorful glass pebbles mixed into the sand there. But the California coastline is rich with other options as well, like the beaches at Crystal Cove State Park in Orange County, Del Monte Beach near Monterrey, and Coyote Point Beach in San Mateo. Depending on when you go, each of these beaches has plenty of beautiful glass to offer, and sometimes the crowds are far sparser than you’ll see at Glass Beach.

On the East Coast, it may be easy to assume that Florida’s coastline or the seaside paradise of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina would be a jackpot of sea glass. The truth is that you’d be better off traveling up to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Pea Island near Cape Hatteras is one of the more popular stops, along with Coquinas Beach up at Nags Head.

The sandbarred shoreline of Cape Cod in Massachusetts sees a great deal of ocean activity that can produce a surprisingly large amount of sea glass for seekers. Venturing still more northerly to Maine, fortify yourself with a lobster roll and catch a ferry to the Cranberry Isles. Here, it’s often reported that the rarest red and deep blue hues of sea glass can be found by lucky, eagle-eyed treasure hunters.

Beach Glass

Because the frosted patina of sea glass is specifically created due to the currents and salt content of the ocean, you won’t find it on the freshwater beaches of the American Midwest. Instead, you’ll find what’s known as beach glass. A bit less frosty than sea glass, beach glass is plentiful along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

In Wisconsin, the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center near Milwaukee is a lovely destination for birdwatching, hiking, and beach glass hunting. For a really interesting time, head up to Petoskey in Northern Michigan. Not only can you find beach glass at Bayfront Park, you may also stumble across Petoskey stones, unique fossilized rocks with honeycomb-like patterns on their surfaces.

Morocco

Aerial view on old city of Essaouira in Morocco
Essaouira, Morocco | streetflash | Adobe Stockstreetflash | Adobe Stock

When you think of Morocco, it may well be that your first thought is Marrakesh, with the Jemaa el-Fnaa market, an array of historical gardens, and the Bahia Palace.

Sea glass enthusiasts, however, know that the place to be is Essaouira, on Morocco’s eastern coast. If you step outside of the city walls to the windswept expanse of beach, you’re likely to find beautiful pastel gems of sea glass by the handful. But because Morocco is known for artisans that create stunning porcelain tiles, you can also find ocean-smoothed bits of discarded pottery painted with exquisite lace-like patterns.

Japan

Beach near Nago city in Okinawa, Japan

Morizono Park in Omura City near Nagasaki is an interesting sea glass destination. Unlike most sea glass beaches which were the result of industrial factories dumping their waste glass, the beach in Omura City was purpose-built as a glass beach. The city created this beach out of recycled glass in order to combat the growth of a species of algae with a particularly unpleasant aroma. The result is a sparkling carpet of jewel-like “sand” that’s stunning to behold.  You likely won’t find big pieces of sea glass to carry away, but it’s worth a trip just to see the twinkling expanse in the sunshine.

The place to go in Japan to actually pick up collectible sea glass is in Okinawa, near the city of Nago. Here, the aptly named Sea Glass Beach is renowned for the sheer quantity of gorgeous glass bits you can find on her shores. All sorts of shapes from chunky rhomboids to smooth marbles are scattered amongst the rocks here. It’s even vaguely, distantly possible that you’ll find a prized Japanese glass fishing float.

Australia

While Shark Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular sea glass beaches, is closed for renovations in 2023, hunters can move down the coastline to Malabar Beach. Tucked into a curve of the coast facing the Tasman Sea, this little beach often yields large quantities of emerald green and amber sea glass.

In South Australia, Robe’s Glass Beach is reported to be “more glass than sand.” Known properly as Factory Bay, this beach turns up lots of the typical bottle colors of glass due to its long history as a city dumping site. But every once in a while, a lucky seeker can find rare reds and purples here.

Tips and Tricks

When hunting for sea glass, the key is to look for gritty beaches with plenty of shells. You don’t want sunbathing beaches with long stretches of powdery sand when you’re looking to go seaglassing. You’ll find the most sea glass on rocky shorelines.

It is recommended that you bring a scoop of some kind along. Some beaches are home to creatures that could be venomous and some pieces of glass may still have sharp edges—there’s any number of reasons why you might not want to just stick your hands right into piles of rocks. Use a kitty litter scoop to sift through your findings and pick your treasures out from there.

Wearing sunglasses will obscure your view of the beach and may hide the telltale twinkles of glassy bits from your sight. Instead, wear a sunhat to protect your face and eyes while also allowing you to more easily spot glass.

The best times to visit a sea glass beach will be early in the morning, after the tide has gone out, or—once it is safe—after a big storm has stirred up the beach. You should see a fair number of new deposits after such activity.

Often, beaches and parks may have laws restricting whether or not you can remove sea glass from the premises. Some may allow you to take sea glass but leave fossils, some may allow you to take as much as you like (but please be polite about it and leave some for other seekers), some may not permit any removal at all. Check before you go, and keep an eye out for any posted signs.
