Traffic, car rentals, and packed public transportation don’t make for a relaxing vacation. For your next trip, choose one of these U.S. cities that are a paradise for walkers. Pound the pavement in the concrete jungle in New York City or stroll along the water in San Francisco—some of America’s best destinations are also the most walkable.

We compiled data from Smart Growth America’s Foot Traffic Ahead rankings to determine the best walkable cities in the US. This non-profit group measures destination walkability in the 35 largest US metropolitan areas by analyzing walkability metrics to create an overall walkability score.

Michael Rodriguez, Director of Research at Smart Growth America, explains how they determine which city is the best for walking. “When we talk about walkability in Foot Traffic Ahead, we’re asking two questions: How many businesses and destinations are within walking distance, and are there sidewalks, crosswalks, and other safety features that make it easy to walk from Point A to Point B?”

Rodriguez says these walkable areas are some of the most popular tourist destinations. “Travelers can likely save on transportation costs by choosing to visit our top-ranking metros and staying in walkable areas.” After all, Rodriguez explains, “Few recreational tourists spend money to go stay in an empty business park on a weekend.”

The report found that the most walkable cities in the U.S. tend to be on the coasts, except for Chicago.

These are the best cities to walk in the US:

  1. New York, New York (Walkability Score: 100)

Since less than half of New York City residents own a car, it’s no surprise that The Big Apple is the most walkable city in America. The city block grid design makes it easy to find your way without getting lost (or being glued to your smartphone), and you’ll find endless choices for breaks to refuel on every block.

New York’s public transportation system is the best in the country, with buses, subways, trains, and ferries making the city even more accessible.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Little Italy, NoLita, and Bowery.

Best Walkable Hotel: Equinox Hotel New York

  1. Boston, Massachusetts (Walkability Score: 74.3)

Simply get lost along the charming streets of Boston, or add a little more purpose—and history—to your walk on the city’s famous Freedom Trail. Follow the line on the pavement for 2.5 miles and take a self-guided tour of Boston’s best neighborhoods and attractions. Or, download the Freedom Trail app to learn some of the city’s history while you walk.

Boston has a wide public transit network as well, with subways, buses, ferries, and commuter trains covering the city and surrounding suburbs.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Beacon Hill, Chinatown, and North End.

Best Walkable Hotel: Boston Park Plaza.

  1. Washington, DC (Walkability Score: 72.6)

The best way to see Washington, D.C.’s monuments is on foot. Start at the National Mall and work your way from the Washington Monument down to the Lincoln Memorial. The city’s diverse neighborhoods are all extremely walkable, but if you prefer a more peaceful walk, head to Rock Creek Park, an urban oasis with plenty of walking trails to explore.

When you get tired of walking, Washington D.C.’s extensive public transportation network makes it easy to get around without a car. The city’s subway system extends into two neighboring states (Virginia and Maryland).

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: U-Street, Dupont Circle, and Mount Vernon Square.

Best Walkable Hotel: Kimpton Hotel Monaco Washington DC

  1. Seattle, Washington (Walkability Score: 69.4)

Seattle is a hiker’s paradise with three stunning national parks in its backyard. Get in some warm-up walks around the city, exploring the lively Pike Place Market and the Space Needle. When your energy starts to flag, you can find an amazing cup of locally brewed coffee practically everywhere you turn in the city.

Seattle’s rapid transit network has improved significantly over the last few years, and now offers a choice of light rail, streetcar, monorail, and commuter rail for getting around the city.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, International District, and Belltown.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Charter Hotel

  1. Portland, Oregon (Walkability Score: 68.5)

Portlanders have a walking mindset that’s reflected in the design of their city. The Smart Growth America study states, “Metro Portland and Seattle share a Northwestern environmental commitment that encourages walkable urbanism.” Portland is not only an extremely walkable city but it’s also one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country, with a wide network of designated bike lanes and bike paths.

When it’s raining, buses, streetcars, and the light rail offer alternatives for navigating Portland.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: The Pearl, Old Town, and Downtown

  1. San Francisco, California (Walkability Score: 66.2)

Don’t let San Francisco’s hilly terrain deter you—it’s one of the most walkable cities in the US. Climb up high for incredible views of the bay, meander through the city’s many public parks, and definitely don’t miss a chance to walk across the famous Golden Gate Bridge.

When you’re ready for a ride, San Francisco’s web of buses, light rail trains, streetcars, and iconic cable cars covers all corners of the city.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Chinatown, Tenderloin, and Polk Gulch.

  1. Chicago, Illinois (Walkability Score: 65.9)

While the Windy City is at its most walkable in the spring, summer, and fall, you can still get around by foot even on the coldest winter days, thanks to Chicago’s Pedway. The Pedway is the city’s system of underground tunnels and overhead bridges connecting more than 40 blocks in downtown Chicago.

Chicago’s train system nicknamed the “L” for its elevated tracks, began operating in 1892, making it the oldest metro system in the country. There are over 140 stations throughout the city and suburbs to help you explore without a car.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: East Ukrainian Village, Wicker Park, and Near North Side.

Best Walkable Hotel: Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile

  1. Los Angeles, California (Walkability Score: 59)

Los Angeles is a famously car-centric city, with traffic-clogged freeways and ample parking lots, but that wasn’t always the case. Many neighborhoods within the city were originally designed as walkable urban enclaves.

The city is trying to change its dependence on automobiles and return to its walkable roots. “Los Angeles is the most densely populated metro in the U.S. and there is an understanding that they have reached the limit of freeway expansion as a part of their transportation system,” explains Smart Growth America.

The city recently invested $180 billion to expand and improve its regional transit system.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Santa Monica.

Best Walkable Hotel: DoubleTree by Hilton Los Angeles Downtown.

  1. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Walkability Score: 57.2)

Nicknamed the “City of Bridges” for the more than 400 bridges connecting communities across the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers, Pittsburgh is great for a scenic stroll by the water.

If you’re considering relocating, Pittsburgh earned high marks in the walkability study for housing affordability in its most pedestrian-friendly areas.

Regarding public transportation, Pittsburgh has 27 light rail stations, 700 buses, and boasts the oldest continuously operating funicular railway in the U.S.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Friendship, and Bloomfield.

Best Walkable Hotel: Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh Downtown.

  1. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Walkability Score: 55.1)

With all of the unique regional cuisine that Philadelphia has to offer (like cheesesteaks, hoagies, and water ice), you’ll be grateful for the city’s high walk score and the chance to walk off your indulgences. In addition to a vibrant downtown area, Philadelphia has more than 10,000 acres of public green space for when you need a nature fix.

Philadelphia is also home to the sixth-largest public transportation system in the U.S., the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), which includes trains, subways, trolleys, and buses.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West, and Avenue of the Arts South.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Notary Hotel

  1. Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minnesota (Walkability Score: 54.4)

There are over 40 colleges and universities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, and a dense cluster of walkable amenities have sprung up around these lively communities. Downtown St. Paul is undoubtedly the best neighborhood for walkers, with everything you could need located within just a few blocks.

Although the walk between the centers of Minneapolis and St. Paul would be long, a light rail connects the two.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Summit Hill, and Summit-University.

Best Walkable Hotel: Hyatt Place St. Paul/Downtown.

  1. Miami, Florida (Walkability Score: 54.2)

Avoid Miami traffic and explore this lively city on foot instead. Soak up the sun while you stroll along the 7-mile Miami Beach Boardwalk, or eat your way through the Calle Ocho neighborhood on a walking restaurant crawl while being serenaded by live music.

Miami has a 25-mile elevated rail system, Metrorail, that is a great way to get between Miami International Airport and Downtown Miami without needing a car. Once you’re downtown, hop aboard the Metromover, a free public bus traveling through the city’s most popular areas.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Wynwood-Edgewater, and Little Havana.

Best Walkable Hotel: 1 Hotel South Beach.

  1. Charlotte, North Carolina (Walkability Score: 51.7)

Although Charlotte is a fairly car-dependent city overall, it’s a great example of what the Smart Growth America study calls “walkable villages within a big city.” Head to Uptown Charlotte (the city’s center) to see this in action. This area is divided into four smaller neighborhoods or wards, which are very walkable.

Although Charlotte’s public transportation network isn’t as robust as others on this list, it does have buses and two short light rail lines.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Uptown, Plaza Midwood, and South End.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Ivey’s Hotel.

  1. Austin, Texas (Walkability Score: 50)

Austin is an oasis of walkability in Texas’ famously car-centric culture. Downtown Austin is by far the most walkable area in the city. Designed in a grid system, this compact city center is easy to navigate and features acclaimed restaurants, lively bars, and boutique shops on practically every block.

Although Austin’s public transportation is limited to its Capital Metro Bus System, the city is also reasonably bike-friendly if you want an alternative method for getting around than walking.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, West University, Bouldin Creek.

Best Walkable Hotel: Thompson Austin.

  1. Atlanta, Georgia (Walkability Score: 49.4)

Atlanta’s walkability really depends on what neighborhood you’re in. In Peachtree Center, in the heart of downtown, you’ll find many shopping and dining hubs within easy walking distance from one another. Once you get further from the city center, it’s more likely that you’ll need a car to get around.

The city is also prioritizing improving its bikeability, as evidenced by the Atlanta Beltline Trail, a 22-mile rail trail that encourages walking and biking.

Atlanta’s public transportation system, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) serves over 100,000 people daily across its network of buses and trains.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Peachtree Center, Sweet Auburn, Midtown.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Westin Peachtree Plaza.

The Least Walkable City in the US

If you’re wondering what least walkable city in the U.S. is, Las Vegas ranked last out of the 35 cities on the list. The study notes, “The only high-density walkable urbanism in the metro is along The Strip.” However, The Arts District and downtown are both reviving, so hopefully, Las Vegas will see improved walkability outside of The Strip.

If the movie “The Hangover” has taught us just one lesson, it’s that you should be prepared for anything on a trip to Las Vegas—so make sure you pack accordingly. The key to a good Vegas packing list is versatility, as you never know what a trip to Sin City might have in store.

Whether you’ll be spending most of your time stuck in a conference center on a business trip, partying with bachelorettes, or gambling at the casino, it’s important to pack these essentials. This is the ultimate Las Vegas packing list.

Clothing

When deciding what clothing to pack for Las Vegas, keep in mind the wide temperature swings you’re likely to experience during your trip. It may be hot outside during the day, but casinos, restaurants, and conference centers are often overly air-conditioned. Las Vegas is a desert city, so temperatures can drop significantly once the sun goes down. The answer: packing lots of layers.

No one wants to go on vacation only to be too afraid to leave their hotel. So, if you’re looking for the safest countries to travel to in 2024, plan your next trip around this list.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, a travel insurance provider, just released its annual list of the safest countries in the world. The rankings are created using an extensive methodology that includes surveying recent travelers, analyzing data from the Global Peace Index and the US State Department, and evaluating the GeoSure Global scores of the major cities in each country. These data points are used to calculate a weighted score reflecting each country’s safety.

Berkshire Hathaway issues an important caveat alongside its safest countries list: “These ratings aren’t predictive—that is, just because we say Canada is safe that doesn’t mean it will rank in the Top 10 in the future. Also, it doesn’t account for the possibility of natural disasters, like the Canadian wildfires.” Inclusion on the list also doesn’t mean that “every part of the company is as safe as any other,” says the company.

This is the ninth year that Berkshire Hathaway has released this study. Over the years, the company says the definition of a safe place to travel has changed over time. “A safe place was originally a place that’s largely free from terrorist activity. Then it became a place that was safe from disease outbreaks. Now it’s a place where all types of people can move about freely without discrimination or harassment.”

Canada rose from sixth place in 2023 to claim the title of the safest country to travel to in 2024. Canada was ranked highly for safety due to its low rates of violent crime. However, travelers are advised to watch out for wildfires, which have been a major issue in the country in recent years, causing diminished air quality and the potential for health problems.

“Is my destination safe?” It’s a question many American travelers have asked themselves as they pour over the State Department’s travel advisories and color-coded maps.

Mexico is a vast country, with heaps of beautiful and interesting places to see, and some 28 million Americans safely travel there each year. To help you plan your own trip, I’ve gathered some of the safest places to visit in Mexico, complete with information on why you should go and where to stay.

The Safest Places in Mexico

Keep in mind that incidents can happen even in the safest places in Mexico, and destinations that don’t appear on this list could still be great spots for a vacation. No matter where you go while traveling abroad, you’ll want to follow common-sense rules such as drinking only in moderation, getting a cab instead of wandering around after dark, and leaving your valuables at home.

Mexico City

Despite a longstanding reputation as a dangerous city to visit, Mexico City only has an advisory to exercise increased caution, and for good reason; the downtown core in particular is considered quite safe, and the city has numerous attractions for visitors—including street art, colorful markets, and more than 150 museums.

Where to Stay: The small, beautifully decorated Nima Local House Hotel is one of the best luxury hotel options in the city. For a more affordable option, consider the Chillout Flat Bed & Breakfast, which earns plaudits for friendly service and homemade granola.

Tulum

Mayan ruins on the coast of Tulum, Mexcio

As Playa del Carmen has been the site of some troubling violence in the past, the coastal town of Tulum to the south may be a safer alternative. It is also less touristy than other resort towns on the Yucatan Peninsula, offering well-preserved ruins of the former Mayan city walls and other historic structures right in town. The State Department has explicitly stated there are no restrictions on travel to Tulum or to Chichen Itza, the magnificent archaeological site just an hour up the road.

Where to Stay: Guests appreciate the clean, comfortable rooms and fast Wi-Fi at the centrally located Posada Luna del Sur.

Huatulco

A beach town located in Oaxaca to the southwest of Puerto Escondido, Huatulco offers tons of water activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving, some nearby surf spots, and tours of coffee farms to boot. Huatulco is considered one of the safest places in Mexico.

Where to Stay: For an indulgent resort experience you can’t do much better than Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa, where amenities include multiple swimming pools and tennis courts, yoga classes, watersports, and nine restaurants.

Merida and Valladolid

Street in Merida, Mexico at dusk

Gerardo Tanaka Pacheco, Senior Account Executive for MSL Group, the public relations firm for VisitMexico.com, recommends these two towns as great alternatives to other nearby tourist hot spots. “A lot of people go to Playa del Carmen and Tulum, but on the Yucatan Peninsula there are these two beautiful colonial cities that are so welcoming, colorful, and full of traditions that travelers won’t regret visiting them,” he says.

Merida is a walking-friendly town that is connected to Chichen Itza by a toll road, which is considered the safest way to travel in Mexico if you are driving. The Mayan influence remains strong here, and the area has its own style of cuisine that diverges considerably from what you will find in other parts of Mexico.

Midway between Merida and Cancun is Valladolid, a colorful and friendly city that’s within easy driving distance of several beautiful cenotes.

Where to Stay: In Merida, consider snagging a poolside room at the Luz En Yucatan. In Valladolid, you can’t go wrong at the centrally located Hotel Posada San Juan.

Bacalar

Aerial view of Bacalar Lagoon in Bacalar, Mexico
JoseLuis | Adobe Stock

Pacheco says that Bacalar, also on the Yucatan Peninsula, is “an amazing place, kind of unknown and definitely uncrowded. This is one of my favorite secrets spots in Mexico; the lagoon there is unbelievable.”

Called the Lake of Seven Colors, the lagoon stretches for 42 kilometers and is fed by underground rivers. Like Todos Santos mentioned below, Bacalar holds the official designation as a “Pueblo Magico,” or Magical Town, due in large part to the lagoon. In addition to being one of the safest places in Mexico, Bacalar is also very affordable.

Where to Stay: At the Bacalar Lagoon Resort, you can get a view of the lake right from your cabana.

Campeche

Campeche, Mexico at dusk

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the western coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Campeche is a walled Spanish colonial city that has been superbly restored. The walled center is somewhat of a museum piece, but the life of the town surrounding it might even be the main attraction. There are also significant Mayan ruins in the state of Campeche, of which the city is the capital; these aren’t as well known as the famous ruins to the east, and as such they’re less crowded.

Where to Stay: Try for a balcony room or suite at the modestly priced Hotel Socaire.

Queretaro

Peña de Bernal, Queretaro, Mexico
luismrivas | Adobe Stock

Queretaro’s streets are a wondrous mix of old and very old, as grid-like Spanish streets connect to the pre-Hispanic winding lanes from the time of the Otomi. From rock climbing and art galleries to architecture sightseeing, there is a ton to do in this central Mexican city.

Where to Stay: La Casa del Atrio, across from the Museo de Arte, is both popular and affordable.

Todos Santos

This surf town in Baja California Sur features world-class waves and lots of natural beauty—and it’s just far enough north of touristy Cabo San Lucas to offer respite from the crowds. Todos Santos is slowly becoming more popular, but its stone streets and uncrowded beaches have earned it the official Pueblo Magico designation.

Where to Stay: La Poza Boutique Hotel & Spa has a fantastic oceanfront location at very reasonable rates.

Cabo San Lucas is one of the world’s prime vacation spots for good reason. Accommodations range from ultra-luxury retreats to down-to-earth glamping getaways, with levels of hospitality to match. There’s a rich, uplifting culture to enjoy; adventures galore, whether organized or not; that unbeatable Cabo San Lucas weather; and, of course, the main attraction: the vast, inviting sea, alongside the region’s other iconic natural wonders.

Still, if you’re planning a trip here, you might wonder: Is Cabo San Lucas safe? That’s a valid thing to ask, especially considering that in recent years, the city has experienced the highest crime rate in Baja California Sur.

The U.S. government recommends “increased caution” when traveling to the state of Baja California Sur, where Cabo San Lucas is located. It should be noted, however, that most forms of violence in Baja California—homicides, kidnappings, extortions, and so on—are related to the drug war, so travelers have mostly been spared.

While that’s reassuring to know, it’ll behoove you, before landing in Cabo, Mexico, to be informed about what not to do in Cabo, whether you can drink the water in Cabo San Lucas, what you need to know about swimming in Cabo, plus key information about wildlife like snakes and scorpions in Cabo San Lucas.

Tips for Safety in Cabo San Lucas

  • When making your way around Cabo San Lucas, limit your explorations to daytime hours, beware of pickpockets and other thieves, don’t hail taxis off the street, and—as with any destination—if you get into an Uber, share your ride’s progress with a friend or loved one.
  • Drinking water in Cabo San Lucas should be restricted only to bottled water and glasses of water poured at reputable hotels, resorts, and restaurants where your server has reassured you that what they’re serving is agua purificada—purified water. And skip the ice.
  • In Cabo San Lucas, swimming in the ocean can be a risky proposition. The riptides are fierce, the jellyfish are plenty, and the lifeguards are all but nonexistent. Stick to swimming only at your hotel’s swimming pool, or at a beach that’s known to be safe, most of which are on the eastern side of the Baja Peninsula. Never enter a closed beach, and heed all posted signs and flags.
  • Some of Cabo’s wildlife species are forces to be reckoned with. Snakes and scorpions in Cabo San Lucas can cause serious injuries and medical emergencies—especially rattlesnakes, yellow-bellied sea snakes, and the bark scorpion. Know how to identify and avoid these species, but if you get bitten, seek immediate medical attention. Worried about bug bites in Cabo San Lucas? The key ones to avoid include the Baja brown recluse and mosquitoes, so wear DEET and pack antihistamines
  • Topping the list of what should you not do in Cabo San Lucas: drugs. Not only do they incapacitate you, making you more likely to be targeted as a victim, but if you’re caught using drugs in Cabo San Lucas, the punishment will be severe—Americans charged with drug possession can be kept in a Mexican prison for months before their cases finally go to court..

How to Get Around Safely in Cabo San Lucas

Yes, there are larger security issues going on throughout Baja California, as well as in adjacent parts of Mexico. But in Cabo San Lucas, crimes that affect tourists are mostly relegated to pickpocketing and other petty forms of theft—so hide your valuables, lock your doors, and use common sense when it comes to exploring anywhere off the beaten path or going out after dark. If you get mugged or forced to access an ATM, don’t resist—your physical safety is always more important than your money.

In terms of what to avoid in Cabo San Lucas, the U.S. Department of State recommends that travelers not hail taxis directly off the street anywhere in Mexico. Instead, use hotel transportation services or taxis that have been officially dispatched; unlicensed cab drivers have been known to scam travelers. Taxis are not metered in Cabo San Lucas, so always negotiate the price before getting in, and don’t pay until you arrive at your destination. Taking public transportation in Cabo San Lucas is not recommended either, since buses have been hijacked and theft is commonplace.

Uber runs in Cabo as well, though tensions between taxi and Uber drivers have sparked protests at times. If you decide to use a ridesharing app in Cabo San Lucas, take all the usual precautions: Share the progress of your ride with a friend or family member so that someone always knows where you are. When waiting for your ride, choose a busy, well-lit area. And when your driver arrives, confirm that his or her face and license plate match what comes up on your phone. Then sit in the back seat—never the front.

The American government also recommends that travelers in Mexico “avoid driving alone or at night” and to use toll roads when possible. If you must drive, keep your gas tank as full as possible, carry a spare tire, and charge your phone.

Natural Disasters in Cabo San Lucas

How dangerous is Cabo San Lucas in terms of natural disasters? The region is prone to hurricanes from roughly July through September; if one should hit while you’re there, take cover and follow authorities’ instructions. Baja California Sur is also subject to earthquakes and volcano eruptions, so read up on what to do in case either of those happens while you’re visiting, follow official advice, and pay attention to any and all warnings.

Drinking Water in Cabo San Lucas

Can you drink the tap water in Cabo San Lucas? The short answer: It’s not recommended. The pipes here can contaminate the Cabo San Lucas water, which often causes digestive issues for anyone not used to drinking water in Cabo right out of the faucet.

Instead, stick to bottled water, or ask your restaurant server for purified water—agua purificada—with no ice. (Speaking of drinking in Los Cabos—or anywhere you may travel—never leave your beverage or meal unattended, since spikings are not unheard of.)

Other hygienic factors to keep in mind while traveling in Los Cabos: be judicious with the street food you buy and avoid raw vegetables—similarly to the tap water, these items may be prepared in a way that your digestive system is unused to.

Swimming in Cabo San Lucas

The expansive sea, of course, is the main draw in this part (and many other parts) of Mexico. But is swimming in Cabo San Lucas safe? Not always. There’s much to know before submerging yourself in the Cabo ocean. The fiercest danger is riptides, which make many Cabo beaches unswimmable. Along with rogue waves, they regularly drown strong swimmers, tragically sweeping them out to sea. They can even knock over adults who are standing in water that’s only ankle-deep.

If you do find yourself getting pulled out by a riptide, try to stay calm and swim parallel to the beach into the breaking waves. Should you need saving, try to float, raise one arm up in the air, wave, and call for help.

Most beaches in Cabo San Lucas don’t have lifeguards, unfortunately, but officials often put out colored flags to let beach-goers know where and when swimming in the Cabo San Lucas ocean is safe—and where and when it’s not. It’s critical to obey all posted signs, never enter a closed beach, and know that this isn’t the place to rent or play around in water vehicles, since many aren’t maintained to standard. Instead, swim at your resort’s swimming pool or at a beach that’s well-known to be safe, including several on the eastern side of the Baja Peninsula.

One other danger to be alert for if you’re planning on swimming in Cabo San Lucas: jellyfish. You can wear a Lycra skin for protection, or just consider this just one more reason why you shouldn’t swim in Cabo seas.

Snakes, Scorpions, and Insects: Wildlife Dangers in Cabo San Lucas

Besides jellyfish, there are other animals to be wary of in Baja California. There are 35 species of snakes in Cabo San Lucas, about half of which are venomous. Most people never encounter one, but it’s still good to know what the poisonous snakes in Cabo San Lucas look like: The yellow-bellied sea snake looks like a floating stick in the water, while the area’s 18 species of rattlesnake are identifiable by their signature noisemakers.

Cabo’s snakes tend to hide in rock piles, brush, or trash piles, so avoid those. It helps to wear closed-toe shoes, stay on the beaten path, and carry a travel first-aid kit. If you get bitten, keep the wound below your heart and don’t cut open the wound or try to suck the venom out. Most importantly, get to a doctor or hospital as soon as possible.

Bugs in Cabo San Lucas are also worth knowing about. The Baja brown recluse spider, in particular, can cause extremely damaging bites. Identify it by its tan to brown color; long, fuzzy legs; and the “violin” pattern on its back.

Cabo has plenty of mosquitoes, too, so wear DEET repellent and pack antihistamines. There haven’t been many cases of Zika in Mexico recently, but the CDC reminds travelers that a risk of the mosquito-borne illness may still remain.

Mexico has upwards of 200 scorpion species, though only eight of those are dangerous to humans. The scorpions in Baja, Mexico, that travelers need to know about include the venomous bark scorpion, which is yellow and about three inches long. You definitely don’t want it to sting you, especially if you’re older or a child. If you do get stung, apply ice and seek medical help immediately.

Scorpions are more active in summer and at night. To keep your life free of them, tap and shake out your shoes before putting them on, shut your bags tightly so they can’t crawl in, and leave them alone if you see them. You can also carry a scorpion toxin antidote, available at some Mexican pharmacies.

New Orleans is a city in permanent vacation mode, where dancing, live music, indulgent restaurants, and parties can always be found. Nicknamed “The Big Easy” for the laissez-faire lifestyle, New Orleans is where visitors come “let the good times roll”.

Part of the city’s famously-laid back, partying reputation can be attributed to the fact that it’s one of the few destinations in America where you can legally drink on the street, which can contribute to a raucous atmospher that leaves some visitors to wonder, is New Orleans safe?

According to a study conducted by finance site Money Geek, which analyzed the most recent crime statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), New Orleans ranks as the seventh most dangerous city in the country.

Don’t let this deter you from visiting New Orleans—the majority of crime that occurs in the city does not involve tourists. The main crimes tourists need to worry about are petty crimes, such as scams or pickpocketing.

Tips for Staying Safe in New Orleans

The New Orleans tourism board has issued a visitor safety guide, which recommends travelers  “use the same personal safety precautions and to stay vigilant as they would at home or in any metropolitan destination. This means following common sense safety tips, including:

  • Traveling in groups and avoiding walking alone on unlit streets at night
  • Paying attention to your surroundings
  • Not flashing valuables or cash
  • Never leaving your drink unattended
  • Not leaving personal belongings unattended

Whether you’re in a packed bar, watching an impromptu street performance, or participating in a festival, you’ll likely find yourself in a large crowd at some point during your New Orleans trip. Make sure to practice anti-pickpocket techniques in these situations, such as keeping your wallet in your front pocket, wearing a cross-body purse, and monitoring your bag.

Common New Orleans Scams

There are a few (relatively harmless) notorious scams that you may encounter on a visit to New Orleans.

One popular one is a stranger stopping to tell you that they bet they can “guess where you got your shoes.” If you agree, they’ll answer “on your feet” and try to get you to give them money to settle the wager. The best response to this scam, and most others in the city, is to just ignore people who shout random things at you—avoid eye contact and keep walking, or offer a polite “no thank you.”

Another frequent scam that you may see, especially in tourist areas, are aggressive shoe shiners, who may try to shine your shoes (without your permission) and then harass you for money. Again, just say “no thank you” politely, and keep walking.

Places to Avoid in New Orleans

New Orleans is an eclectic mix of neighborhoods. The most popular ones for tourists to visit are the French Quarter, Uptown (The Garden District), Treme, and the Arts/Warehouse District. All of these neighborhoods are very safe as long as you’re following the same common sense safety tips you’d practice in other cities.

Central City and Hollygrove are the neighborhoods with the highest crime rates, according to GIS Geography, and so tourists may wish to avoid those areas or exercise extra caution when visiting.

New Orleans Nightlife Safety Tips

Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana at night
f11photo | Adobe Stock

New Orleans’ nightlife is famously raucous. Follow the same safety tips here that you would on a night out at home, including:

  • Remaining aware of your surroundings
  • Watching your drink at all times/not accepting drinks from strangers
  • Taking a taxi or rideshare in lieu of walking in unfamiliar areas after dark
  • Confirming the license plate and driver photo when being picked up by a rideshare
  • Not drinking and driving
  • Staying with your group

New Orleans Weather Risks

New Orleans is one of the rainiest cities in the country, experiencing an average of 62 inches per rain each year. The low-lying city has a tendency to flood, and it’s also vulnerable to hurricanes.

Before traveling to New Orleans, sign up for NOLA Ready emergency alerts from the city. You can choose to be notified for emergency alerts (including severe weather or an active shooter) or seasonal info (with tips on how to prepare for hurricane season). Emergency alertss will be sent via text, email, phone call, or app.

If you do find yourself in the city during an emergency weather situation, follow instructions from local officials and be prepared to evacuate if needed.

Autumn enthusiasts are constantly on the hunt for that first sign of changing leaves. Fall looks a little different in every part of the country and dedicated leaf peepers don’t want to miss a thing. From golden aspens amidst the Rocky Mountains to classic New England foliage along the East Coast, here are seven destinations where leaf peepers can catch the best fall colors.

Bar Harbor, Maine

The East Coast is an autumnal classic for leaf-peepers and Maine offers the best of the best. While there is plenty to do in the town itself, from museums to ghost tours, it’s the adjacent Acadia National Park where the season truly shines. Hike, drive, or bike the meandering paths and roads criss-crossing the park or take a kayak out on Jordan Pond to take in the foliage reflected on the water.

Where to Stay: Holiday Inn Bar Harbor

The Holiday Inn Bar Harbor is pet-friendly, perfect for hikers looking to have an adventure with their furry friend on one of Acadia’s many pet-friendly hiking trails. The cozy atmosphere of La Bella Vita, the hotel’s in-house Italian eatery and wine bar, will warm you right up after a day of exploration as you enjoy stunning views of Frenchman’s Bay.

Napa, California

Did you know that grape vines change color too? Wine country in autumn is a sight to see, when not only the leaves on the trees but also the sprawling vineyards become drenched in oranges and golds. Take a Napa Valley wine tour to enjoy the foliage (drink in hand), or take to the skies in a hot air balloon to see the seasonal colors from a new perspective.

Where to Stay: Hotel Napa Valley

Hotel Napa Valley Ascend Hotel Collection, A Victorian-era house among trees

This Victorian-era boutique hotel exudes the quintessential vibes you want from a foliage excursion. Indulge in a complimentary breakfast served in the property’s wine cellar each morning and then hop in the car to head to one of several scenic wineries less than 20 minutes from the property.

Duluth, Minnesota

Experience lakeside foliage in Duluth, Minnesota, a city situated on the coast of Lake Superior. With 129 city parks and over 300 cumulative miles of trails for everything from hiking and biking to horseback riding and cross-country skiing, there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. Visit Duluth suggests setting aside time to go birding, as migratory species can be seen in spades just off Skyline Parkway during the fall season.

Where to Stay: Lift Bridge Lodge

Life Bridge Lodge

Located just off Lake Superior, this property features a number of beautiful outdoor spaces, private balconies, and lakeview rooms, ensuring that you’ll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the autumn scenery even after returning to your hotel.

New York City, New York

Generations of singers have been crooning about autumn in New York and for good reason. Every year, the notoriously fast-paced city comes alive with fall color. Grab a latte and stroll around Central Park to enjoy the crisp air and changing leaves. Make a day trip out to one of the city’s many botanical gardens, located anywhere from Staten Island to the Bronx to Brooklyn.

Charlottesville provides access to some spectacular foliage spreads in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the town is also an attractive regional destination in itself. Go shopping and grab a meal at the Downtown Mall to enjoy some historic architecture coupled with the fall colors. A drive down the Blueridge Parkway or a day trip to Shenandoah National Park will get you out of the city and into the heart of some of the best foliage in the state.

Where to Stay: The Draftsman Charlottesville

The Draftsman is located right in downtown Charlottesville, just five minutes from the Downtown Mall. They offer room types ranging from Premiere Queens to Luxury Suites and all are pet-friendly. If you’re looking to elevate your seasonal beverage tastes beyond pumpkin spice, this is the city for you. Known for its coffee culture, you can’t go wrong ducking into any of the cafes that dot the city for an autumn pick-me-up while taking in the sites. The Washington Park Arboretum offers visitors the full color palette of the season with a wide range of deciduous trees, from dogwoods to Japanese Maples to towering oaks. Just two hours outside the city you’ll find a riot of fall color at Mount Rainier National Park, where you can leaf peep on horseback on a guided trail ride with Echo River Ranch.

Where to Stay: Hotel Sorrento

Street view of Hotel Sorrento in Seattle, Washington

Hotel Sorrento is located in the heart of the city with easy access to its most famous attractions and, in line with the often spooky spirit of the season, its own resident ghost. But don’t worry— while most haunted hotels are chilling, you’ll find that this one is pretty chill. Alice Toklas, the inventor of the modern day “special” brownie, is said to roam the fourth floor.

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen’s namesake trees put on quite a different show than those in the Northeast and Midwest, washing the town in hues of yellow and gold. The area’s many hiking trails become windows to a new world, surrounding visitors on all sides with towering white trunks and a golden canopy. Don’t miss a photo op with the Maroon Bells—some of the most photographed mountains in the United States—while they’re decked out in their autumn leaves.

Where to Stay: The Little Nell

The Little Nell is a luxury ski resort nestled in the mountains of Aspen.Guests take advantage of the stunning foliage by joining one of many seasonal activities offered, from off-roading to fly-fishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When did the term leaf peeping start?
A: “Leaf peeping” refers to tourists, also called leaf peepers, who travel to destinations in search of beautiful fall foliage. A surprisingly divisive term, many people think “leaf peeping” is a product of the social media era, but the phrase can be found in print as early as 1966 in a Vermont newspaper.

Q: When should I go leaf peeping?
A: Leaves tend to change earlier in the season the further north and higher above sea level you travel. Peak foliage times can vary even within a single state, especially with inland versus coastal destinations. Many states keep up-to-date foliage maps (predictive maps that show when foliage should be at its peak in different areas), that you can check when planning your fall vacation.

Q: What major US city is the best to see fall foliage?
A: There is no one best US city to see fall foliage. The best city for leaf peeping depends on the timing of your trip, the type of foliage you’d like to see, and the activities you enjoy. If you’re a city-explorer, plan a trip for mid-October to Manhattan. If you’re all about the outdoors, Aspen in September will be a good fit.

Q: What are the different kinds of foliage?
A: Only deciduous trees—your classic oaks and maples, etc.—change color and lose their leaves in the autumn. Coniferous trees—spruce, pine, and other needle-leaved trees—will remain, as their common name implies, evergreen.

Q: How to pronounce foliage?
A: According to Webster’s dictionary: fō-lē-ij (listen below)

Q: Is there still foliage in November?
A: Many places in the United States are past peak by the time November comes around, but you can still catch fall colors in the southernmost areas of the country.

Explore Walt Disney World’s Theme Parks

When people hear Orlando, they think of immersive theme parks—notably Walt Disney World, and for good reason. Disney World offers all you need for a magical vacation; theme parks, dozens of hotels, dining establishments, golf courses, water parks, shopping centers, and more. There are four theme parks here, the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT. You’ll find iconic sights and experiences, like Cinderella Castle and Pandora—The World of Avatar.

There’s a lot to do at Walt Disney World, so consider visiting this expansive property over several days. If you’re traveling with kids in the summer, avoid spending all day in the park, or you’ll end up dealing with hot and cranky children. Instead, do some morning rides and return in the evenings to catch Magic Kingdom’s fireworks and more Disney fun.

Nearby Recommended Hotel:  Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a nature-inspired resort in Walt Disney World. There are kid-friendly activities for your little ones and a free shuttle service to Disney’s theme parks.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has five roller coaster rides, so you can pick and choose or try them all. Thrillseekers will love Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Meanwhile, Flight of the Hippogriff is perfect for kids. Crowds are inescapable here, but to reduce your wait times, visit on weekdays or pay an extra fee for an express pass that lets you skip lines.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Universal’s Loews Portofino Bay Hotel is part of the Universal Orlando Resort. A stay here offers exclusive theme park privileges like unlimited ride access, which lets you skip regular lines, and free water taxi shuttles between Universal’s parks.
