When imagining a Caribbean vacation, the first things that come to mind are beaches, ocean views, and long days in the sand. But a tropical vacation doesn’t have to be spent beachside. St. Lucia is brimming with incredible hiking—from rainforest tours to mountain treks—and unique endemic wildlife.

The Best Hikes in St. Lucia

From drive-in volcanoes to challenges designed for the most experienced of hikers, this island offers activities for every type of traveler.

The Tet Paul Nature Trail

The Tet Paul Nature Trail takes less than an hour to complete but offers several incredible lookouts over the Pitons and a cultural and environmental learning opportunity. The hike is guided by locals who will teach you about local culture, history, and nature, including traditional medicinal plants and fruit trees, as the hike progresses.

“Other highlights include the Cassava House,” adds Richard Moss, Senior Sales Manager USA for the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, “where you can learn about the Amerindian art of Cassava production, the Traditional House offering a glimpse of how ancestors of the residents of Saint Lucia lived, and a working organic farm.”

Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths

The six-acre Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths is the perfect option for the laid-back adventurer. Touted as the world’s only “drive-in volcano,” you won’t have to do much actual hiking at all. Take a dip in the mineral baths, made from mineral-rich volcanic mud, or a trip to the ever-changing hues of Diamond Falls, whose colorful waters are dyed with the vivid minerals dissolved within.

The Pitons

Arguably the most famous formation marking the St. Lucia skyline, the Pitons are twin volcanic spires rising from the ocean on the island’s southwestern coast. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Petit Piton and Gros Piton rise 2,425 feet and 2,579 feet above sea level, respectively, and are rarely hiked without an experienced guide.

“The Gros Piton Nature Trail is a challenging hike and is popular with active visitors. It takes about five to six hours to complete, offering breathtaking views,” says Moss, “Nearby, the Petit Piton Trail is a more strenuous hike which is even more challenging.”

For the daring traveler, try the newly launched Saint Lucia Three Peaks Challenge, where hikers are invited to summit Gros Piton, Mount Gimie and Petit Piton alongside local expert guides from The 758 Adventurers.

Pigeon Island National Park

Throughout its history, Pigeon Island National Park has been an 18th- and 19th-century military embattlement, a pirate hideaway, and now a highly-visited national park and central venue for the annual Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival. Connected to the main island by Pigeon Island Causeway, dedicated hikers at nearby hotels can easily walk to the park, up the dual peaks for incredible 360 views, and back down again in just a few hours.

Other Rainforest Hikes

In St. Lucia, you’ll never be in want of beautiful rainforest treks. Check out Edmund Rainforest Trail for sweeping vistas of Mount Gimie, make a stop on your way to the Soufriere mud baths to explore Volga Nature Trail, or wonder at the waterfalls along En Bas Saut Rainforest hike

Birding & Wildlife in St. Lucia

Although the island is home to over 1,300 species, birds are the main attraction when it comes to wildlife in St. Lucia. Of the 180 varieties of birds you can find on the island, six are endemic, meaning you won’t catch them anywhere else. The top spots for birding are:

The Des Cartier Rainforest Trail

This loop trail is a treat for avian enthusiasts and plant lovers alike, with most of the 2.5-mile trek wandering through the vibrant and lively jungle just off the island’s east coast. Hikers can find guided tours dedicated to birding on the trail.

The Millet Bird Sanctuary

Saint Lucia Black Finch is one the five endemic birds you can see along the nature trail in rain forest in Millet Bird Sanctuary Trail, St Lucia

The 1.75-mile walk through The Millet Bird Sanctuary will put hikers in the path of five of the six endemic species of birds on the island, including black finches, warblers, and the endangered St. Lucia Parrot—the National Bird of St. Lucia.

The Vieux Fort Wetlands

The Vieux Fort Wetlands are the place to be for travelers interested in waterfowl of all kinds, with ducks, egrets, and herons passing through the 6-acre conservation.

Tips for Outdoor Adventures in St. Lucia

Take the Sunshine Seriously

St. Lucia is sunny year-round, with temperatures averaging in the mid-80s. While this is perfect for soaking up the sun, proceed with caution, especially when hiking. Moss recommends wearing sunscreen daily and hydrating consistently. He also suggests insect repellent, particularly during the morning and evening hours.

Leave the Camo at Home

It may be tempting to blend into the background to catch a glimpse of that rare St. Lucia parrot but beware: camouflage clothing is restricted for civilians in St. Lucia, and wearing the print can result in heavy fines.

Book a Guide

Many hikes across St. Lucia are enhanced by the expert knowledge of local guides, who can explain regional history, indigenous plants, and points of interest that would otherwise be missed. However, there are certain trails where hiring a guide is a matter of safety. According to Moss, for example, hiking Gros Piton is “generally not done without experienced guides.”

Visit the excursions page on the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority’s website to plan your hiking trip, or speak with staff at your hotel for information on the best local hikes.

While navigation is one of the most important uses travelers have for their smartphones, how often do you think about exactly how a phone knows where you are and where you’re going? You might not know that in addition to connecting to cellular towers, your phone is constantly tracking GPS signals from satellites circling the planet—and that you can use your phone GPS without data for more purposes than you might expect.

If you’ve ever tried to navigate in a place where your phone has weak or no celluar service, you probably wished you could take advantage of offline phone GPS. Fortunately, you can: GPS signals are raining down around us at all times, and your phone can connect to them without any real reliance on your cellular company, impact on your data plan, or dependence on the phone mode you are in. These signals are free for all of us to use, so long as we have the right apps and a device with which to connect.

In fact, you can even use an older, retired phone as a GPS unit, so long as the apps will still run on the operating system. Then, once you get back to civilization, your regular smartphone will still be fully charged and ready to go.

How Accurate Is My Phone GPS Without Data?

Most of the apps I have used measure GPS coordinates to tenths of a second, which is accurate within four to 11 meters, depending on where on the planet you are plotting (accuracy improves as you move toward the poles).

If that isn’t close enough, technology is in development that will make some phones accurate to within 10 centimeters.

You Don’t Have to Be Offline to Use a Phone as GPS

Many of the most popular uses for GPS are for folks who are off the grid without access to Wi-Fi or cellular connections, but the technology’s usefulness is not limited to the backcountry by any means. First, we all know that cell coverage is hardly ubiquitous even in developed areas; heck, my kid’s central New Jersey soccer practice field shows “no service” so often that some parents drive a mile down the road during practice to connect.

Another benefit is preserving battery life; GPS uses are particularly beneficial when you are doing things in areas where cellular service is available but poor, which causes your phone to burn up battery life trying to connect. Using offline phone GPS can also help you conserve data. This is useful when traveling abroad, where data plans are often costly and limited.

Finally, many location-based apps gobble up data voraciously. Your phone’s GPS tracking allows you to use them in offline mode, incurring no data penalty so long as you preload maps and information while connected to Wi-Fi.

Certainly, your cellphone can do more without a cell connection than you might think; here are five of the best.

Track Your Flight in Real Time

Let’s start with my favorite way to use phone GPS without data: to track the flight I’m on in real time. There are a few apps that do this, but I use Flyover Country, created by University of Minnesota researchers and funded by the National Science Foundation.

The app offers options to view road maps, terrain maps, and satellite maps, including information on geology, underwater core samples, mammal and dinosaur fossils, and landscape features for various destinations as you pass over them in flight.

To use the app you need to input and preload all the data along the route while still on a Wi-Fi or cell connection. Then, once you go into airplane mode, all that information is available as you fly, along with your ground speed and altitude.

You’ll need a window seat for this to work well; in fact, on some flights I have found that I had to have the phone almost against the window to obtain and hold a reliable GPS signal.

Go Backcountry Hiking

Smartphones are becoming go-to tools for many hardcore backcountry travelers, who can spend days or even months out of range of cellular signals. Many find phones more space- and weight-efficient than dedicated GPS units, particularly since phones can take photos, too.

This excellent how-to guide makes a compelling case for a smartphone as your go-to GPS tool. It includes some very good battery life management tips, noting that some phones can last five to 10 days without a charge with careful use.

A few of the best backcountry navigation apps include Gaia GPS, AllTrails, iPhiGeNie, and ViewRanger.

Track Your Fitness

A booming number of fitness applications work with offline GPS, including MapMyRide, Strava, MapMyRun, Runkeeper, and MapMyFitness. For most of these, using your phone GPS without data will allow you to track your run, walk, hike, or other outing offline. While you need a connection to take advantage of some of the apps’ features, using them on GPS-only mode preserves on battery life and data usage, which can be a helpful upside when you are tracking long bike rides or runs.

Fitness Armband for Your Phone

The most quintessential time to save data and money is during your workout, complete with a robust armband of course.

Note Your Exact Location

There are all kinds of ways this can be useful, such as saving your spot in an airport parking lot or sharing your location with someone else to facilitate a meetup. I know folks who have used GPS coordinates on their phones to mark and/or share things like trailheads, campsites, turn-offs for dirt roads, fishing spots, waterfalls, and abandoned ruins.

The free My GPS Coordinates app (available for iOS and Android) has functions to email or text your coordinates directly from the main screen, and even shows the accuracy of the GPS signal (it tracks my office desk within 16 to 33 feet depending on signal access).

To share locations you obviously need connectivity, but you can log them using GPS and then share or recall them later.

Use Mapping Apps Offline

Finally, there are heaps of full-featured offline mapping applications, including the ubiquitous Google Maps and Apple Maps. Many of these are unfortunately somewhat limited when it comes to GPS-only navigation; Google Maps, for example, allows you to pre-download a 50-square-kilometer map for temporary offline use, which will help in some situations but isn’t much use on a longer road trip. To find alternatives, see 10 Best GPS App and Navigation App Options for Android and The 5 Best Offline GPS Apps for iPhone.

Cell Phone Car Mount

Make navigation a little safer with a car mount stand, adaptable to almost all smartphone sizes.

When deciding what to pack for a cruise, you’re really packing for three distinct sub-trips: your cruise ship, which is the equivalent of a large destination resort with a controlled environment; the ports of call, where you will get out and roam around the local area; and your flights to and from your departure port. Sometimes you can solve all three problems with a single wardrobe and accessory set, but sometimes you will need completely different sets. Scroll down to the cruise packing list below to learn how to pack for a cruise as well as what to consider during all aspects of your cruise vacation.

What to Pack for a Cruise: At Sea

Once upon a time, almost all cruise ships were pretty dressy, including some events calling for full formal wear. Now only a few upmarket ships still require a bit of fussing, but most of the mass-market ships, like those in the Royal Caribbean and Princess stables, are about as casual as you like. In any event, as long as you’re not out on deck, you’ll be in a comfortably air-conditioned space virtually all the time.

The first job of your cruise packing list is to determine just where on the formal-casual scale you want or have to be in, or if you want to prepare for both ends of the scale. Luckily, business casual attire (pantsuits, maxi dresses, khaki pants, and button-up shirts tend to fair just fine these days). And for those cruise lines that do have more formal nights, there are typically still buffet options for meals if you want to avoid fancier dress.

Then, decide how you want to play your wardrobe. I pack the minimum I’ll need to comply with the lowest degree of dressiness required. On the other hand, other couples I know are fully engaged with dress: The wife doesn’t want to be seen in the same outfit at dinner on any two different days, and the husband even packs his tux for the “Captain’s Dinner” event. But that’s not how everyone travels. Ultimately, it’s your call what’s most comfortable for you to wear on vacation, and therefore to pack.

In any case, layers will be your best friend. Moving between the air conditioned interior of the ship and the potentially much balmier surroundings can feel like packing for two totally different climates. Light shawls, thin cardigans, and linen pants all walk the line between warm and cool, and can be dressed up or down to fit your wardrobe strategy.

Beyond the basic daily wear, pack whatever special recreational wear and accessories you’ll need. Even if you never leave the ship, you will probably want swimwear, and possibly some other specialized clothing and equipment as well.

Where to Buy Formal Wear for a Cruise

While many may want to take advantage of the rare opportunity to dress up, few people have a closet full of formal attire at their disposal. Clothing rental services are an affordable way to get glam on the high seas without overspending or cluttering up your closet with an outfit you’ll only wear once. Rent the Runway offers one time rentals for special occasions and monthly subscriptions (cancel anytime) in 5, 10, and 20 item bundles for those who want to round out their cruise wardrobe.

For those looking to make a more permanent purchase, Suitshop has a large selection of sturdy suits that will last a lifetime and Nordstrom offers dresses at varying levels of formality, from beachy maxi-dresses to true formal options.

What to Pack for a Cruise: In Port

The situation here is obvious: You need to pack for the climate in your cruise destination—and, for most people, being active in each port. You’ll be walking around during shore excursions, and many call for specialized equipment. That means you need to pack comfortable walking shoes and clothing on your cruise, even if you won’t need them on the ship itself. Make sure you pack appropriately for any off-shore excursions.

As to how heavy/light to travel, the Caribbean is hot and steamy pretty much all the time, and the Mediterranean in summer can come close. But weather in other popular areas such as Alaska, New England, and inland European rivers is a bit more variable. Your best bet is to check the weather forecasts just before you pack for your cruise, and always be prepared for rain. For Europe and Bermuda, you should aim for more resort-casual clothing (fair warning: Golf courses in Bermuda have strict dress codes). Some other cruise itineraries that are more casual than the norm include Hawaii, the Mexican Riviera, the Caribbean, and French Polynesia.

What to Pack for a Cruise: Everything Else

Beyond the perfect wardrobe, there are a few key items that will ensure your cruise vacation is nothing but smooth sailing. Add these items to your cruise packing checklist before you embark:

Day Trip Gear

When putting together a packing list for a cruise, think about what you’ll need for your planned activities. A daypack is a necessity for a spending a full day off the boat. Stock it with a reusable water bottle (collapsible for the ultimate space-saver), sun hats, sunblock, insect repellent, and anything else you’ll need to get through the day. Make sure to download the port city’s map so you can access it offline in the event you lose access to WiFi. Drop a pin in your ship’s docking location and set an alarm well ahead of your departure time to signal its time to head back to the ship.

Toiletries

Travelers sometimes forget that they don’t need to pack a full closet full of personal-care products and accessories in their travel toiletry kit. You can buy toothpaste, batteries, and tissues in most places around the world—and also on the cruise ship, albeit at stiff prices. Ships vary in what toiletries they offer onboard.

However there are a few things you don’t want to leave off your cruise checklist, like prescription medications, glasses or contact lenses, and any specialized skincare or hair products that you can’t live without. It’s also a good idea to have a few OTC medications handy from the start in case of seasickness or minor aches and pains from a long flight.

Unlike air travel, cruise ships don’t place an upper size limit on your liquid personal items, so unless you’re flying to your port of departure, your containers can exceed 3.4oz.

Technology

The latest packing challenge is with gadgets. I, for one, would have withdrawal symptoms if I couldn’t get online every day, so I would select a cruise ship with the latest internet connectivity and pack my laptop. On the other hand, if you want to get away from it all, a cruise ship is the ideal place—and you don’t have to pack any devices, converters, and such. Don’t forget your camera, and a travel extension cord can also come in handy.

As mentioned above, any critical devices you can’t live without should come along in your suitcase, be it a laptop, tablet, or just your smartphone. In addition to any necessary chargers, make sure you have an international adapter that works with any port city on the itinerary.

In-Flight Essentials

When packing for your pre- and post-cruise flights, figure out what goes in your carry-on and what gets checked. If you’re big on collecting souvenirs and buying local handicrafts, leave room in your suitcase for what you bring home. You don’t want to get hit with paying for another checked bag or hauling both your regular carry-on and a shopping bag of loot on your flight home.

Cruises are all about relaxing, soaking up the sun on the ship’s deck and catching up on a good book or finally catching up on that podcast. Make sure you don’t use up the leisure activities you packed for the cruise while bored in the terminal or during the flight. Download multiple books on your e-reader or library app, some for the flight and some for the trip. If you prefer paperback, pick up an in-flight read at one of the terminal kiosks or see if your airport has a library loan program.

Important Documents

Make sure you have your passport, ID, credit cards, and any cash (USD and local currency) you plan to spend. Bring along photocopies of important documents and your cruise itinerary. Make sure to leave any vital documents you don’t need for an excursion locked up safely in your cabin.

Can I Do Laundry on a Cruise?

Do you need to pack for the full cruise, or can you have your clothes washed or dry cleaned during your sailing? Although most big ships provide some kind of service, the specific answer to that question varies wildly among different ships: Some charge for laundry the way hotels do, some set a fixed price for a laundry bag full, some sell laundry packages prior to sailing, and a few offer self-service washers and dryers.

But no matter how you do it, you’ll definitely pay more for doing laundry while cruising than you pay at home. In general, large ships offer more options than small ones, and 200-passenger river cruises may provide only limited services. Again, check what your cruise ship offers before you decide how much you need to pack. If you’re unsure what your cruise line offers or don’t want to pay the fee, pack some travel laundry detergent packets and a travel clothes line to wash light items like undergarments and t-shirts in your cabin sink.

What Not to Pack for a Cruise

Like any form of travel, there are a few prohibited items. These include obvious candidates like firearms, fireworks, knives, and any illegal substances. But there are a few surprising items on the list as well. On Carnival Cruises, passengers are not allowed to bring along curtains or large radios and travel clothing steamers are banned from coming aboard any Royal Caribbean ship. Other common prohibited items include scissors, alcoholic beverages, meat, and fish. Make sure to check your specific cruise line’s list of restricted items.

It’s worth noting that cruise ships are governed under federal law, so all marijuana products, including medical marijuana, are generally prohibited onboard regardless of port of departure. Alcohol policies vary by ship (so do your research with your cruise line directly).

Cruise Packing Tips

Packing for any trip can be tricky, but packing for a vacation that is essentially three trips in one is a monumental task for even the most efficient traveler. Maximize your organization and luggage space with these cruise packing tips.

Bring Spare Clothes in Your Carry-On

Having a change of clothes and a few day-to-day necessities in your carry-on can also be a lifesaver in the case of lost or delayed luggage. If you find yourself with no idea where your bags are or waiting to have them shipped to your next port of call, you’ll be glad to have a few extra items on hand to hold you over. It’s also great for that stretch of time between boarding the ship and your luggage showing up in your cabin.

Get a Personal Item That Does Double Duty

Save packing space by bringing along a personal item for the flight that can double as a daypack for excursions. This Lite Daypack from Bellroy is minimalistic and functional while this option from Got Bag is even more compact and comes in four neutral colors. A foldable wet bag is a great additional to any daypack—it can be used to organize small items on your pre-departure flight and to store your wet swimsuit on the way back to the ship after a day in port.

Take Advantage of Packing Cubes

Keep yourself extra organized by packing for your “sub-trips” in packing cubes. Designate one for your formal wear, one for your onboard resort wear, and one for anything you plan to wear in port. This keeps your wardrobe organized without having to unpack everything or dig through a upturned suitcase looking for that one shirt you just know you packed.

My most essential recommendation for what to bring on a cruise: Don’t get obsessive about it. Do your best and plan to cope with whatever problems you encounter along the way.

Where to Book a Cruise

When booking a cruise you have two options—booking directly with the cruise line on their site or hunting down the best deals through an online travel agency. Check out our round-up of the best site to book a cruise to find the best deals and easiest processes.

If the movie “The Hangover” has taught us just one lesson, it’s that you should be prepared for anything on a trip to Las Vegas—so make sure you pack accordingly. The key to a good Vegas packing list is versatility, as you never know what a trip to Sin City might have in store.

Whether you’ll be spending most of your time stuck in a conference center on a business trip, partying with bachelorettes, or gambling at the casino, it’s important to pack these essentials. This is the ultimate Las Vegas packing list.

Clothing

When deciding what clothing to pack for Las Vegas, keep in mind the wide temperature swings you’re likely to experience during your trip. It may be hot outside during the day, but casinos, restaurants, and conference centers are often overly air-conditioned. Las Vegas is a desert city, so temperatures can drop significantly once the sun goes down. The answer: packing lots of layers.

You may think of Las Vegas as a sedentary destination, but you’ll be surprised at how many steps you rack up. The Strip is over 4 miles long, so be prepared with comfortable walking shoes. Don’t forget to pack sandals you can wear to the pool during the day and dressier shoes for evenings out.

The post 2024 Holidays Predicted to Be the Busiest Air Travel Period Ever: Here’s How to Prepare appeared first on SmarterTravel.

]]>
If you’re flying for Christmas or New Year’s, be prepared for record-breaking crowds. AAA forecasts that the 10-day period from December 23 through January 1 will be the busiest ever for airports. AAA is projecting that 7.5 million air travelers will take to the skies this holiday season, breaking the previous record of 7.3 million passengers in 2019.

According to AAA, a slight dip in average ticket prices contributes to the increased number of travelers. “This year-end holiday forecast, with an additional 2.5 million travelers compared to last year, mirrors what AAA Travel has been observing throughout 2023,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel.

If you’re flying for the holidays, follow these tips to make your airport experience easier.

Arrive Early

Everything from airport shuttles to TSA screening lines will be busier than normal over the holidays, so leave yourself plenty of extra time before your flight. If you need to check in at the airport or drop off your bag, we recommend leaving an hour or two earlier for the airport than you normally would.

Even if you’ve checked in online and have TSA PreCheck, you should still leave about an hour earlier for the airport during the holidays, as all lines (even expedited screening ones) will be longer. According to the TSA, more than 17.6 million passengers are enrolled in TSA PreCheck, the highest amount ever recorded. That’s 3.9 million PreCheck passengers last year, which could mean longer wait times.

Avoid Checking a Bag if Possible

More passengers mean more changes for lost luggage. Especially if you’re traveling with important holiday gifts, you’ll want to minimize the odds of losing your bag, so travel carry-on only if possible.

However, even if you manage to fit everything into a carry-on, you should still plan for the possibility that your flight will be full and overhead space limited—so prepare to be forced to gate-check your bag and pack your valuables and medications in your personal item and a luggage tracker in your suitcase in case it does get checked and go missing.

Pack Airport Delay Supplies

In addition to long lines at check-in and security, you can expect extra wait times at airport eateries and shops. Save money and skip the lines by packing yourself supplies, like snacks, an empty water bottle (you can refill once you’re past security), and a portable battery charger so you don’t have to fight the crowds.

The holiday period is notorious for airport delays, so pack more provisions than you think you might need in case you get stranded.

Know the Rules

Traveling for the holidays can present packing challenges. If you’re unsure if you can bring a wrapped present or leftover cranberry sauce through security, check with the TSA before heading to the airport. The TSA has several holiday travel blog posts that cover a wide variety of packing conundrums.

Still unsure? Use the TSA’s What Can I Bring search tool.

Download Airline Apps

Before heading to the airport, download the app for the airline you’re traveling on. Having the app preloaded on your phone will help ensure you get notified in case of delays or cancellations and give you an easy way to rebook another flight if needed (without waiting to talk to a customer service representative.)

Plus, many airlines now offer free entertainment via their app, even on domestic flights.

10 Hotel Room Workout Exercises:

RecommendedTwo to three sets of 12 for each

Modified Push Up: Place your knees on the floor, and follow the same steps.

2. Tricep Dips: (works chest, deltoids, triceps, and upper back)

Steps: Place your hands at the edge of a chair or bed shoulder-width apart, with your feet out in front of you. Keeping your back straight, bend your elbows back until they reach a 90-degree angle, and then raise up by fully extending your arms.

Modified Tricep Dip: Sit on the floor with your knees at a 90-degree angle. Place your arms directly behind you, and bend from the elbow to dip backward and up.

3. Single-Leg Stand (works core, glutes, hamstrings and quads)

Steps: Sit on a chair with both feet on the floor. Elevate one leg, and lean forward using your working leg and core to stand up. Sit back down and repeat.

Modified Leg Stand: Using your core strength, stand up with both legs then sit back down and repeat.

4. Squats (works core, glutes, hamstrings and quads)

Steps: Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Lower down until your hips and knees are parallel, then come up and repeat.

Modification (45-Degree Wall Sit): Place your back against the wall and slide down to a 45-degree angle, keeping your knees and feet aligned. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds.

5. Hip Hinge (works core and lower back)

Steps: Stand with your hands on your hips, feet hip-width apart, and your knees slightly bent. Keeping your back flat and core tight, slowly lower your upper body down and up.

Modified Hip Hinge: Sit on a chair or bed with both feet on the floor, and follow the same steps.

6. Leg Lifts, Front, Back, & Side (works core, glutes, and hip flexors)

Steps: Stand up with your back straight and core tight. Raise one leg straight out in front of you to a 45-to-90-degree angle, then bring it back down. Hold onto an object for balance if needed. After one set repeat exercise to the side, and then to the back. Adjust the height of the leg lift to modify.

7. Standing Bicycle Crunch (works core and obliques)

Steps: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, fingertips behind your head, and elbows pointing outward, in line with your shoulders. Bring your right leg up and twist the left side of your body to the right, bringing your opposing knee and elbow together at the torso. Continue by alternating sides.

Modified Bicycle Crunch: Place one hand against the wall for balance and do a set on one side before switching.

8. Plank (works core and lower back)

Steps: Go into a push-up position, or, bend your elbows and rest your weight on your forearms, keeping your back flat and core tight. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds.

Modified Plank: Follow the same steps, only this time with your knees touching the floor.

9. Side Plank (works core and obliques)

Steps: Lie on your side with your body in a straight line. Extend your forearm out, with your elbow lined up slightly below your shoulder. Keeping your hips square and your neck in line with your spine, push yourself up so that your palm is supporting your weight. Hold for 30 seconds and lower, then switch sides.

Modified Side Plank: Follow the same steps using your forearm to hold yourself up.

10. Heel Raises (works calves)

Steps: Raise your heels off the floor while keeping your knees straight. Hold, and then lower your heels to the floor.

Bulky jackets are the bane of cold-weather travelers. If your coat isn’t taking up precious space in your carry-on, you’ll have to lug it around the airport to avoid sweating profusely and looking like a nervous security risk. Here are 10 of the best packable, lightweight winter jackets for travelers that will keep you feeling warm and looking stylish on the road.

Columbia Bugaboo II Fleece Interchange 3-in-1 Jacket

REI

Travel clothes that do double duty are invaluable, and this jacket from Columbia gives you three outerwear options in one. The waterproof shell and fleece lining can be worn independently or zipped together for extra warmth. Although thin and lightweight, the outer shell is designed to lock in body heat, perfect for rainy autumn days. The removable hood and adjustable cuffs add extra customization.

Arc’teryx Men’s Atom Hoody

Arc'teryx

The Arc’teryx Men’s Atom Hoody is a packable jacket that delivers the warmth needed in a whole host of situations and environments. Insulated with lightweight, water-resistant Coreloft™, this hoody maintains thermal performance if exposed to moisture, and compresses into the tiny nooks of your backpack when not in use.

L.L.Bean Quilted Riding Jacket

L.L.Bean Quilted Riding Jacket
L.L. Bean

Most easy-to-pack winter jackets look like activewear and are tough to pull off on a city trip, but L.L.Bean’s Quilted Riding Jacket is the ultimate winter coat that can do both. Its classic design goes with any outfit and won’t make you look like a tourist who just wandered into town off a hike. Thanks to the insulated synthetic lining, it will keep you warm without weighing you (or your suitcase) down. Want to layer this jacket? It has adjustable waist tabs that let you customize the fit based on what you’re wearing.

The North Face ThermoBall Eco Hoodie 2.0

The North Face

The ThermoBall Eco Hoodie, available for women and men, is water-resistant and made of recycled polyester and nylon, made with ThermoBall™ Eco Insulation that performs even in wet conditions. Best of all, this jacket packs down into its own chest pocket, which transforms into a zippered carrying case when not in use.

Columbia Women’s Mighty Lite Hooded Jacket

Omni-Heat lining and insulation give Columbia’s Mighty Lite Jacket plenty of warmth. It comes in a range of colors and can be found for a surprisingly low price when on sale. This lightweight coat won’t add much bulk to your bag and has a handy interior security pocket to stow valuables.

Obermeyer Women’s Tuscany II Jacket

Dick's Sporting Goods

Based in the snow sports mecca of Aspen, Colorado, since 1947, Obermeyer knows a thing or two about cold and wet weather. It’s developed a patented HydroBlock Sport fabric tested to resist nearly 400 inches of rain (and roll stain-causing liquids right off). Find it in the Tuscany II Jacket, which also uses another unique Obermeyer material: Thermore Classic insulation, which is thin and light but still warm. The hood is removable and adjustable, as is the faux fur trim.

Patagonia PrimaLoft Nano Puff Coat

Models wearing the men's and women's sizes of the Patagonia PrimaLoft Nano Puff Coat
Backcountry

Patagonia’s PrimaLoft Nano Puff Hoody (available for men and women) is the lightest jacket I’ve ever owned. The women’s version weighs just 10 ounces (the men’s is 12.8 ounces), yet is ultra-warm and water-resistant. Unlike some other methods of insulation, you can feel good about this jacket: Its 60-g PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco is made from 100% post-consumer recycled polyester.

The Antora Triclimate Jacket

The North Face

The North Face’s versatile Antora Triclimate Jacket (available for women and men) is a three-in-one coat that’s perfect for travel: You can wear the waterproof shell or comfy inner liner by themselves, or combine them to make a warm winter jacket. The hood and wrist cuffs are adjustable for a better fit and to accomodate ski and general winter gear. This breathable coat is designed for hiking and other outdoor activities.

Lululemon Pack It Down Jacket

The Pack It Down Jacket can be folded up into its own small carrying case, making it one of the best packable down jackets for women. The fabric is weather-resistant, and the 700-fill-power goose down is certified to the Responsible Down Standard. You can remove the hood to further cut down on weight and space.

Arc’teryx Men’s Cerium Hoody

Arc’teryx

The Cerium Hoody from Arcteryx is incredibly lightweight—just 11.9 ounces—yet it’s surprisingly warm thanks to its combination of goose down and synthetic insulation. (Note that on rainy or extremely cold days, it’s best combined with a weatherproof shell.)

Would you like to kick back and relax on a beach in the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, without having to obtain a valid U.S. passport first? Good news, you can—U.S. Virgin Islands passport requirements state that as long as you don’t touch down on foreign soil before arriving, you do not need a passport. Since the U.S. Virgin Islands are collectively a U.S. Commonwealth and therefore considered domestic travel for U.S. citizens, it’s easy to take a tropical getaway without having to obtain a new passport.

U.S. Virgin Islands Passport Requirements

While U.S. citizens do not need a passport when entering the U.S. Virgin Islands, they may be required to show proof of citizenship when departing the U.S. Virgin Islands, such as a raised-seal birth certificate in combination with a valid government-issued ID card. So, while a passport isn’t required for travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, you may want to bring one along anyway—that way, you only need to carry one document versus two.

Also, keep in mind that you will be required to have a valid U.S. passport if you choose to visit any of the neighboring British Virgin Islands.

How to Get a Passport Book for Travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands

If you decide you want to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands with a passport, make sure that your passport is up-to-date. If its expired, or if you are a first-time passport applicant, make sure to apply as soon as travel is confirmed. The cost will be greater if you apply for a passport within two weeks of travel time and need an expedited application. You can learn more about the requirements and documents needed to obtain a U.S. passport by visiting the official State Department website.

Other U.S. Virgin Islands Travel Requirements

Visa: No, U.S. citizens do not need a visa to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Vaccinations: No special vaccinations are required when visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands. See the CDC’s website for a list of recommended vaccines.

So, Do I Need a Passport to Visit the U.S. Virgin Islands?

In summary: While U.S. Virgin Islands passport requirements state that you do not need a passport to go to St. Thomas, St. Croix, or St. John, having a passport will come in handy should you choose to travel to the nearby British Virgin Islands.

More Information When Visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands

U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism is a great resource for things to do and places to stay, as well as everything you need to know before you go when planning a trip to St. Croix, St. John, or St. Thomas.

Imagine casually saying to your friends, “Oh, I’m holidaying on a private island in France next summer.” Bragging rights can be yours for less than the cost of a hotel room in Paris when you rent one of these unbelievably affordable private islands.

Coz Castel, France

Coz Castel, France island for rent
Airbnb

You can’t find a luxury hotel in Paris for less than $262, but you can rent your very own private island in France for that amount—and it sleeps up to 10 people if you want to split the cost and make it even cheaper. Located on the Cotes-d’Armor, the island is just over 650 feet for the mainland and is accessible by car at low tide, so you can get out and explore Brittany as much as you like (as long as you make it back before high tide when the island is surrounded by water).

North Twin Lake, Maine

North Twin Lake, Maine island for rent
Airbnb

Nearby Baxter State Park in Maine can get packed during the summer, but you can escape the crowds by booking this private island that has views of the Appalachian-trail ending Mount Katahdin, and no neighbors within a half-mile. The half-acre island is all yours for as little as $225 a night. Unlike Baxter State Park, the island even has excellent cell phone coverage, so you won’t be completely off-grid.

L’ilot, Mauritius

L’ilot, Mauritius
Muse Villas

No boat is required for the private island L’ilot, which is accessible via a rock-and-wood bridged causeway. Spend days lounging on the sand and swimming in the turquoise lagoon, or pop back over to the mainland whenever you feel the need. There’s freshwater on tap, electricity, and all the modern conveniences you’d find at a hotel. The comfortable house has four bedrooms and can sleep up to 8 people (6 adults and 2 children). Rates start at $920 a night—a bargain if split four ways.

Saint George, Maine

Saint George, Maine island for rent
Airbnb

This rental off the coast of Port Clyde, Maine, includes both McGee and Barter islands. McGee Island offers 110 acres of solitude and has three houses on it that have a combined 11 bedrooms. Barter Island is undeveloped, and you can take a boat there or walk across a natural land bridge at low tide to explore. This option is intended for large groups, and at $1,800 per night, its the priciest option on the list. However, splitting the cost among guests can save you big—the max occupancy of the island is 24 guests, which breaks down to just $75 per guest per night.

La Isla Zacatolsa, Nicaragua

La Isla Zacatolsa, Nicaragua island for rent
Airbnb

Gather six of your closest friends and you can have a private island together for just $30 per person. For $180 a night, this retreat on the Lake of Granada in Nicaragua is a bargain. La Isla Zacatalosa is a private villa that has its own tennis court, pool, garden, and walking path. You’ll share the island with howler monkeys and birds, as well as a caretaker who will help you with anything you need during your stay. The island is a 10-minute boat ride from the mainland at an $8-$10 fare each way.

Damariscotta, Maine

Private island rental in Damariscotta, Maine
Airbnb

For guests in search of a luxury experience that still keeps the rustic charm of a family camping trip, look no further than this Maine rental. The island features an outdoor shower and outhouse with running water, but no electricity (never fear—there is a generator on-site to charge up any necessary devices). Take the chance to enjoy the serenity of the surrounding nature, relax on the private beach, and maybe catch a glimpse of the nearby active eagles’ nest—all for just $600 per night.

British Columbia, Canada

British Columbia, Canada island for rent
Airbnb

You could share an all-inclusive resort with hundreds of other people, or you could have your own private island eco-retreat for $659 per night—your choice. Out There, an off-grid retreat on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, includes a stocked kitchen for you to make your own breakfast and lunches, and a home-cooked dinner each night. Up to six people can sleep in the island’s tent cabin and yurt; and the island’s fire pits, hammocks, and private beaches are all available for you to enjoy.

Caroline Morse Teel would like to book all of these private island stays immediately. Follow her on Instagram @travelwithcaroline.

Families visit Orlando for its theme parks, water parks, and endless magical attractions. While these make for a fantastic trip, there are plenty of other fun things to do in Orlando besides visiting Disney.

Go wandering through the lush gardens of Harry P. Leu Gardens or picnic by the waters of Lake Eola—this article is your one-stop guide to experiencing the best of Orlando.

Explore Walt Disney World’s Theme Parks

When people hear Orlando, they think of immersive theme parks—notably Walt Disney World, and for good reason. Disney World offers all you need for a magical vacation; theme parks, dozens of hotels, dining establishments, golf courses, water parks, shopping centers, and more. There are four theme parks here, the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT. You’ll find iconic sights and experiences, like Cinderella Castle and Pandora—The World of Avatar.

There’s a lot to do at Walt Disney World, so consider visiting this expansive property over several days. If you’re traveling with kids in the summer, avoid spending all day in the park, or you’ll end up dealing with hot and cranky children. Instead, do some morning rides and return in the evenings to catch Magic Kingdom’s fireworks and more Disney fun.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a nature-inspired resort in Walt Disney World. There are kid-friendly activities for your little ones and a free shuttle service to Disney’s theme parks.

Visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The main draw of Universal Orlando’s theme parks is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This attraction offers an immersive and fun experience where you can escape from Gringotts or get chosen by a wand at Ollivanders wand shop. To see the complete recreation of Harry Potter’s world, board the Hogwarts Express to travel between Hogsmeade at Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley in Universal Studios, Florida.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has five roller coaster rides, so you can pick and choose or try them all. Thrillseekers will love Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Meanwhile, Flight of the Hippogriff is perfect for kids. Crowds are inescapable here, but to reduce your wait times, visit on weekdays or pay an extra fee for an express pass that lets you skip lines.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Universal’s Loews Portofino Bay Hotel is part of the Universal Orlando Resort. A stay here offers exclusive theme park privileges like unlimited ride access, which lets you skip regular lines, and free water taxi shuttles between Universal’s parks.

Learn About Space Travel at the Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center is integral to Central Florida’s culture and a must-visit for space enthusiasts and families. This iconic attraction also serves as NASA’s primary launch facility for spaceflight. KSC’s Visitor Complex showcases interactive exhibits, simulators, and authentic pieces of spacecraft.

Although this attraction is about an hour away from Orlando, it’s worth the drive down as you can explore rocket gardens, watch space-themed IMAX movies, and even meet a real astronaut. It’s also a great way to escape crowded theme parks while offering fun for kids and adults.

Real Florida Adventures’ Kennedy Space Center tour offers round-trip transportation from Orlando if you won’t be driving.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Courtyard by Marriott Titusville Kennedy Space Center’s rooftop bar is perfect for watching NASA’s rocket launches. The hotel features large modern rooms with river views and celestial decor.

Snorkel with Stingrays at Discovery Cove

Seaworld’s Discovery Cove offers a unique experience unlike any other Orlando amusement park. It’s a family-friendly all-inclusive day resort where you can float in the water, snorkel with fish and rays, and feed exotic birds. Discovery Cove limits guest admissions per day, so it’s easier to get up close and personal with animals.

When you’re not swimming, lounge alongside one of the park’s pristine beaches or check out the birds in the Explorer’s Aviary. Add-on packages offer extra-special experiences like swimming with dolphins. The lush landscaping and freshwater pools make Discovery Cove a great place to relax and unwind.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Hilton Grand Vacations Club SeaWorld Orlando is an 8-minute walk from Discovery Cove and offers free shuttle service to all Seaworld attractions. This resort has multiple pools, a kids’ splash pad, and jogging trails to make the most of the beautiful scenery.

Entertain Your Kids at Orlando Science Center

Spending a rainy day in Orlando? A trip to the Orlando Science Center is a great way to keep your kids dry and entertained. One of the city’s most popular family attractions, this center houses four floors of hands-on exhibits designed to educate and inspire young minds.

You’ll find giant skeletons of dinosaurs and several interactive zones for kids. There’s also a nature area where your little ones can meet reptiles, critters, and Lucky the Turtle. Science is fun, but it can work up an appetite. The onsite 4Roots cafe serves healthy, affordable meals made with locally-grown produce.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Comfort Suites Downtown is in the hip North Orange area of Orlando, close to Orlando Science Center, antique stores, and many dining options. Suites have a laid-back design, and guests will enjoy complimentary breakfast and free parking.

Stroll the Beautiful Lake Eola Park

Lake Eola Park

A picturesque slice of nature, Lake Eola Park is a peaceful escape from an otherwise buzzing city. Stroll the park’s paths or enjoy a relaxing picnic by the water’s edge. This green space offers what you need to recharge after a busy day. Located downtown, Lake Eola provides stunning views of Orlando’s skyline.

You can rent swan boats to float on the gentle waters and meet locals here. Every night a massive water fountain on the lake is lit up for a colorful show.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Embassy Suites by Hilton Orlando Downtown is a stylish hotel perfect for couples. Some suites offer gorgeous lake views and whirlpool tubs.

Explore the Florida Everglades With an Airboat Tour

The Florida Everglades is a massive network of subtropical wetlands and forests spanning 1.5 million acres across central and south Florida. This wild, untouched side of the Sunshine State is a unique Orlando attraction. You can watch alligators, river otters, and other wild animals in their natural habitat.

The best way to experience the Everglades is via airboat tours that access the most remote areas. Zip through swamps on an airboat, taking in the scenic views and spotting wildlife along the way. Asides the stunning landscape, you’ll love the thrill of high-speed rides that can reach 45 miles per hour.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Monte Carlo Inn is an affordable, no-frills hotel about 30 minutes from Lake Toho, where you can join Airboat tours. It is perfect for a 1-2 day stay during your Everglades tour in Kissimmee.

Tubing at Kelly Park in Rock Springs

Kelly Park is a local’s favorite, where you’ll find one of Florida’s most beautiful springs. Rock Springs’ remarkably clear waters and 68-degree spring temperature creates a refreshing environment year-round. Often described as Orlando’s natural lazy river, people flock to Kelly Park for the relaxing 20-minute tube ride.

Kelly Park also has one of the best campsites in the area if you love spending time outdoors. There are strict admission limits to avoid overcrowding, and the park fills up very fast, especially on weekends. Try to get there early to claim one of the 280 entry tickets.

Kayaking is available at Kelly Park’s Camp Joy. For the best experience, rent a glass-bottomed vessel for stunning sights as friendly fish swim beneath and around you.

Nearby Recommended Hotel: Homewood Suites by Hilton Orlando-Maitland is a 28-minute drive to Kelly Park. Cozy rooms come with free WiFi and breakfast. There’s also an Applebee’s restaurant onsite.

Spend an Afternoon at ICON Park

Ferris Wheel In Orlando Florida Icon Park
Infinity Moments LLC | Adobe Stock

ICON Park is an entertainment complex at the heart of Orlando’s International Drive. The main attraction here is The Wheel, a 400 feet observation wheel that gives you a bird’s eye view of Orlando. Each passenger capsule is air-conditioned, so the 18-minute rotation is all the more enjoyable.

Other fun attractions at ICON Park include;

 • Madame Tussauds — a museum with over 100 lifelike wax figures of some of the world’s most notable faces.
 • SEA LIFE Orlando — An aquarium with family-friendly exhibits. SEA LIFE Orlando is home to over 5,000 sea creatures, including seahorses, sharks, sea turtles, jellyfish, and more. You’ll love walking through the 360-degree ocean tunnel, where you can see sharks swimming all around you.
