Leaf-peeping season is officially here, which means it’s the perfect time to plan your fall escape. Read on for a few of our favorite small towns to visit this fall—each of which has its own distinct charm and character—for prime foliage viewing and autumnal activities like bonfires and pumpkin picking.

Nisswa, Minnesota

Aerial view of Nisswa, Minnesota
City of Nisswa

Nisswa is a small town located in the heart of central Minnesota. Here, you’ll find plenty of outdoor activities. After fueling up on coffee and pastries from charming Adirondack Coffee or StoneHouse Coffee & Roastery, embark on a serene hike through the Paul Bunyan State Trail, which spans a whopping 115 miles. Mountain bikers should visit The Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails, which offers dozens of winding trails to choose from. However, the best (and most fun) way to sail through the foliage is on a zipline tour through the red, orange, and yellow-hued treetops.

Where to stay: The lakefront Grand View Lodge, which spans across 750-plus acres, offers incredible foliage and waterfront views. The property boasts 2,500 feet of sandy beach, where you can roast s’mores and warm up with a bonfire. Guests can also rent pontoon boats and cruise out on the lake, which serves as a stunning backdrop for leaf-peeping.

Cle Elum, Washington

Cle Elum is less than 100 miles outside Seattle, making an easy and scenic Pacific Northwest escape. In autumn, the temps are crisp (think: mid-40s, 50s, and sometimes low 60s) without being uncomfortably cold. The city and surrounding area are teeming with vibrant foliage. Peoh Point offers picture-perfect views of the changing leaves and wildflowers, while Teanaway Ridge Trail is a popular spot for horseback riding. If you prefer shorter hikes, head to Red Top Lookout, which offers panoramic vistas and excellent wildlife spotting opportunities. An array of themed events, such as the Roslyn Mountain Ale Festival and the Harvest Hustle 5K, are also on the calendar.

Where to Stay: This season, Suncadia Resort is pulling out all the stops. The expansive, 6,000-plus acre property hosts an annual Harvest Festival (which takes place over two weekends in October). Expect an array of fall festivities like pumpkin archery and pumpkin picking, to name a few.

Galena, Illinois

nejdetduzen | Adobe Stock

The tree-lined town of Galena boasts rolling hills, picturesque vistas, and, of course, fantastic leaf-peeping. Take the scenic route and drive along Highway 20 or Stagecoach Trail, where you can admire the crimson, orange, and yellow-hued leaves without having to leave the car. Those in search of more adventurous activities can zipline with Long Hollow Canopy Tours or pedal along the Galena River Trail. Additionally, head to Chestnut Mountain Resort, where you can hop aboard a 90-minute Mississippi River Explorer Cruise and/or ride the ski lift to the top of the mountain. If you can, try planning your trip around the Fall Harvest & Art Festival at Galena Cellars, where grape stomping, carriage rides, wine tastings, and art demos await.

Where to Stay: This bed and breakfast overlooking the Mississippi River will have you feeling like you stepped into an autumn fairytale with its castle-like architecture and richly furnished rooms. The Goldmoor Inn features whirlpool tubs in each room, an on-site spa, and gourmet complimentary breakfast.

Chatham, Massachusetts

For a unique New England leaf-peeping escape, head to the seaside town of Chatham. While the quaint Cape Cod town is best known for its sandy beaches in summer, it’s just as stunning come fall. The landscape encompasses everything from sandy beaches to peaceful forests. For the best views, drive along the tree-lined Historic Route 6A, kayak through the marshes, and hike through the West Barnstable Conservation Area. The conservation area is home to a variety of breathtaking, colorful trees like red oak, American beech, white pine, and Sassafras. Bourne Farm in nearby Falmouth features 49 acres of fields, woodland, and trails to explore. Time your visit for October 8th so you can experience “Pumpkin Day” at the farm (think: pumpkin picking, pony rides, and a petting zoo).

Where to Stay: Chatham Bars Inn is the place to be this fall, with its cozy outdoor fire-pit (ideal for s’mores!) and eight-acre farm for pumpkin picking. The luxury accommodations and on-site spa are added bonuses.

Stowe, Vermont

Every fall in Stowe, the leaves turn to fiery reds, bright oranges, and lovely yellows. The village is located at the base of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, which makes it an excellent destination for leaf-peeping. At almost 4,400 feet above sea level, Mt. Mansfield offers iconic foliage views from every angle, making it well worth the steep, 4.7-mile-long hike. Sunset Rock is much shorter but still scenic. Alternatively, take in the colors from the car and cruise through the Green Mountain Byway or Auto Toll Road. You can also zip through the colorful treetops with ZipTour Adventures and ArbortTrek Canopy Adventures. Finally, don’t miss the Percy Farm Corn Maze and the Trapp Family Lodge Annual Oktoberfest.

Where to stay: At Topnotch Resort, the autumnal activities are endless. Snap a photo of the crisp leaves from the outdoor patio, embark on a romantic carriage ride, lounge out by the fire pit, or warm up in one of the heated outdoor pools and hot tubs.

Healdsburg, California

Plan a fall wine country escape in Healdsburg, which is situated in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country. The town itself, dotted with wineries, vineyards, restaurants, boutiques, and galleries, is nothing short of show-stopping. Come autumn, harvest season is in full swing, as is the foliage: grapevines and trees (including Japanese maple, liquidambar, and crape myrtle, ginkgo, toyon) turn auburn, brown, orange, and yellow. Sip and savor the fall flavors at the 1,200-acre Jordan Vineyard & Winery, where you can indulge in Harvest Lunches followed by on-site hiking complete with jaw-dropping mountain views. At Bella Vineyards & Wine Caves, take a tour of the sprawling grounds followed by live music on the weekends.

Where to stay: The new Montage Healdsburg—set across 250-plus acres of forest and vineyards—boasts a convenient location and ultra-luxe accommodations. The on-site spa, which is situated 20 feet above the grapevines, offers restoring treatments utilizing local ingredients.

Roxbury, New York

The Catskill Mountains have attracted leaf peepers for decades, and the quaint town of Roxbury makes a great home base for exploring since it puts you within easy driving distance of the region’s best autumnal attractions. Visit the 26-mile-long Catskills Scenic Trail, which winds through the countryside. Next, ride to the top of Hunter Mountain aboard the Kaatskill Flyer gondola, where you can admire the foliage from above. You’ll also find a few cideries and breweries nearby, including Wayside Cider and Tap Room and West Kill Brewing. Alternatively, sample some blueberry wine at the nearby Blue Sky Farm and Winery. Get a different view of the foliage on a horseback riding tour or hot air balloon excursion

Where to Stay: The Roxbury at Stratton Falls offers eclectic accommodations that include a Cinderella-inspired cottage, a Dracula-themed cottage, and several bespoke guest rooms. The property also has a private trail that leads you to the Instagram-worthy Stratton Falls.

Jackson, New Hampshire

Jackson is nestled in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, where you’ll find more than 100 miles of hiking trails. The picturesque New England village boasts lush landscapes (think: a foliage-covered bridge and tranquil waterfalls). In nearby Center Conway, you’ll find Sherman Farms, where you can explore the corn maze before feasting on cider donuts. In North Conway, you can embark on a moose safari tour as you take in the changing of the seasons. Venture out a little further to Jefferson, where dogsledding adventures await. Hike Black Cap Mountain (a short-and-sweet trek) for the best views of all.

Where to Stay: Established in the late 1800s, The Inn at Thorn Hill is a perfect escape amid the foliage. Stay in any of their 11 guest rooms or two charming cottages.

Paris, Virginia

The Ashby Inn & Restaraunt

Paris, Virginia is just one hour away from Washington, D.C., yet it feels so far from the hustle-and-bustle of our nation’s capital. Don’t miss the 1,863-acre Sky Meadows State Park, which offers breathtaking leaf-peeping views plus hiking and horseback riding trails. Lost Mountain, which has more than seven miles of trails and a scenic overlook, is another top spot for hiking. Meanwhile, the surrounding area is home to a string of wineries, including Delaplane Cellars (which offers beautiful mountain and vineyard views), Arterra Wines (which hosts weekend events with live music), and RdV Vineyards (which is known for its eye-catching all-white silo)

Where to Stay: The historic Ashby Inn dates back to 1829 and offers ten polished guest rooms, each complete with four-poster beds. The signature restaurant (which serves up elegant eats like hen, scallops, filet mignon, and salmon) is just as incredible as the three-acre grounds (which are lined with gold-hued trees and leaves).

Ridgedale, Missouri

Big Cedar Lodge

Your wilderness-filled escape awaits in the vibrant mountain town of Ridgedale. The 10,000-acre Dogwood Canyon offers an array of outdoor activities, including biking, hiking, wildlife spotting, and horseback riding. Lost Canyon Cave & Nature Trail is best known for its four-story cave and waterfall, which offers optimal leaf-peeping views. Nearby Branson is home to Table Rock State Park, a popular leaf-peeping spot with paved trails, lakefront picnicking spots, and boating opportunities. It’s also home to countless oak and hickory trees, so expect plenty of fabulous foliage, too. The Branson Scenic Railway, which takes you through the Ozark Mountains on a winding, 40-mile journey, is also nearby.

Where to Stay: Ridgedale’s main draw is Big Cedar Lodge, which covers more than 4,600 acres of wilderness. The luxurious ranch resort offers splurge-worthy accommodations, including private cabins complete with wood-burning fireplaces for cozy nights in.

The United States is home to tons of incredible cities, though some are much more crowded than others. Travelers looking for a more off-the-beaten-path escape should consider visiting one of these eight up-and-coming American cities, all of which offer something for every type of traveler.

Fredericksburg, Texas

Street in Fredericksburg, Texas

This central Texas city is less than a two-hour drive from bustling Austin.  Start your trip with a scenic drive along Texas Highway 290 (AKA Wine Road 290), which winds through stunning wineries and vineyards. After, get a taste of Fredericksburg’s fascinating German roots at The Auslander (schnitzel, anyone?)

Main Street, which is located in the heart of Fredericksburg’s thriving downtown area, is well worth a stroll. For more shopping opportunities, make your way towards the Warehouse District, which draws folks from all over for its abundance of antique shops. Meanwhile, Marktplatz (Market Square) is a great gathering spot since it hosts concerts, festivals, and more community-oriented events. Here, you’ll also find Vereins Kirche Museum, an octagon-shaped building boastings historical artifacts that highlight Fredericksburg’s past. Pro tip: Try to plan your visit around springtime, when the area is teeming with beautiful wildflowers

Rochester, New York

Pont De Rennes Bridge in Rochester, New York

The lakefront city of Rochester is famous for its 12,000-plus acres of parkland and ample outdoor recreation opps (think: skiing in the winter, hiking in the spring, paddling in the summer, and so on). Additionally, as the third-largest city in New York, there’s no shortage of things to do. The George Eastman Museum, the world’s oldest museum dedicated to photography–named for George Eastman, who invented the Kodak camera in Rochester–is a must-visit. Art enthusiasts will also appreciate a stroll through the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester Art Center, and Rochester Museum of Fine Arts. Similarly, history buffs can check out the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, where the famed civil rights leader called home for decades. Cap off your adventures by digging into the city’s signature “Garbage Plate” dish, an eccentric combination of meat (usually a hamburger or cheeseburger), fries, beans, and/or macaroni salad. Wash it all down with a beer from one of many craft breweries, including Swiftwater Brewing Company, Roc Brewing Co., and Nine Maidens Brewing Company

Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville is chock-full of Southern hospitality–plus loads of fun and fantastic food. The up-and-coming city, which is just over an hour from trendy Asheville, is nothing short of spectacular. The 10-block downtown area features plenty of green space, including the famous Falls Park on the Reedy. This 32-acre oasis is complete with colorful flowers, scenic walking paths, and, of course, the iconic Reedy River Falls. Art enthusiasts can also embark on a self-guided walking tour of the city’s colorful murals and sculptures. Once you work up an appetite, make your way to one of the city’s 1,000-plus restaurants. Treat tastebuds to something special, such as innovative Latin-American fusion at Asada, Belgian staples at Trappe Door, classic BBQ at Home Team BBQ, and beloved comfort food at Sassafras Southern Bistro.

Knoxville, Tennessee

There’s more to Tennessee than Nashville (sorry, Music City!). For a more off-the-beaten-path escape, head to Knoxville. This bustling college town is home to the University of Tennessee and offers everything from authentic Southern cuisine to exhilarating outdoor adventures. Start with a stroll through the Market Square area, which is dotted with shops and restaurants housed in 19th century-era buildings.

Noteworthy shops include Earth To Old City and Fizz, while mouthwatering eats can be found at Cafe 4 (don’t miss the fried green tomatoes). Meanwhile, the Old City neighborhood offers more of a hipsterfied vibe, with quaint coffee shops, trendy restaurants, and one-of-a-kind boutiques. History buffs can visit the East Tennessee History Center or the McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture, while art lovers can spend an afternoon wandering around the Arts District, which is dotted with galleries. Lastly, enjoy some fresh air at Urban Wilderness, where paddling and climbing are both popular.

San Luis Obispo, California

San Louis Obispo–or SLO, as the locals call it–is situated along California’s stunning Central Coast. Oenophiles will especially love it here: The destination (and its surrounding area) is home to over 200 (!) wineries. A few of our favorites include urban winery Stephen Ross Cellars, Filipponi Ranch, and Tolosa. If you need a break from the vino, get your culture fix by visiting the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, which dates back to the 1700s. Additionally, travelers can head downtown to check out the eccentric Bubblegum Alley, which – you guessed it–is covered with chewed-up bubble gum. Food options also abound, from sweet treats at Cowboy Cookie & Ice Cream to savory seafood staples at Ciopinot Seafood Grille

Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte, nicknamed Queen City, is one of the most up-and-coming southern cities, and it’s easy to see why. Uptown Charlotte, the city center, is a modern metropolis. The neighborhood is teeming with must-visit attractions, such as the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the Levine Museum of the New South). You can also choose from an array of innovative eateries, including locally roasted coffee at Coco and the Director, elevated southern fare at Stoke Charlotte, and elegant French cuisine at La Belle Helene. Beer lovers can also enjoy a pint at one of the city’s dozens of breweries, including NoDa Brewing Company, Birdsong Brewing Co., and Sycamore Brewing – Brewery & Beer Garden

Winter Park, Florida

Escape the bustling crowds of Orlando and head seven miles north to tranquil Winter Park. The greenery-filled city offers plenty of outdoor space, from the stunning sculpture gardens at Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens to the 11-acre Central Park (no, not *that* one), which features a rose garden and beautiful fountains, to the waterfront Kraft Azalea Garden.

You can also indulge in some retail therapy along Park Avenue, where you’ll find more than 130 shops, cafes, and museums. At the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, you can admire the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of Tiffany and Company founder Charles Lewis Tiffany.

Overland Park is Kansas’ second-most populous city. Plus, it’s located right outside Kansas City (about 20 minutes away by car!), making it incredibly easy to get to. In “The Park,” travelers can expect everything from trend-forward clothing shops to drool-worthy BBQ (burnt ends, anyone?),  plus a heaping side of culture, history, and outdoor attractions.

The city’s downtown area feels like a tight-knit town with 300-plus locally owned small businesses waiting to welcome you. A few of our favorites include The Tasteful Olive, The General Store & Co., and Ensemble. Then, satisfy your sweet tooth at Upper Crust Pie Bakery, LaMar’s Donuts and Coffee, or Best Regards Bakery & Cafe. Alternatively, feast on delicious BBQ at Brobecks BBQ or Q39 South. You can also enjoy the thriving arts and culture scene via local attractions like the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum at Prairiefire, and InterUrban Arthouse. Craving some fresh air? Make your way to the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, which spans over 300 acres.

9 Affordable, Under-the-Radar Beach Towns in America https://www.smartertravel.com/affordable-beach-towns/ https://www.smartertravel.com/affordable-beach-towns/#respond Mon, 25 Apr 2022 13:30:00 +0000 https://www.www.smartertravel.com/2008/06/26/five-affordable-under-the-radar-beach-towns-in-the-americas/ There may not be many "undiscovered" places anymore, but there are still quite a few underappreciated ones. This month, we pick five of the most affordable beach towns and islands left in the Americas.

The countdown to summer is officially on, and we can’t help but dream of warm, sunny days spent along the shore. While America is home to hundreds–if not thousands–of beautiful beach towns, some are more costly than others.

For those looking to skip the crowds and save some money, consider visiting somewhere more under-the-radar, where you can expect fewer crowds, less demand, and, as such, cheaper costs. (Remember, fewer crowds equals less demand, which means you can typically expect lower prices.)  Below, read on for the best affordable, off-the-beaten-path US beach towns that are nothing short of spectacular.

Manzanita, Oregon

Manzanita is surrounded by the vast Pacific, tranquil Nehalem Bay, and the towering Neahkahnie Mountain. Manzanita Beach is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and beach bums alike. When you’re not lounging on a towel or blanket on the sand, head into the water to surf, SUP, or kayak. (However, the water can be quite chilly, so a wetsuit is definitely recommended.)

From the shore, you may be able to spot birds and other wildlife (just be sure to bring a pair of binoculars for prime viewing). Beyond the beach, adventure lovers can hike the magnificent Neahkahnie Mountain or fish in  Nehalem Bay, while shoppers can stroll down Laneda Ave and pop into quaint shops like Oregon Coast Clothing Co, SYZYGY, or Cloud & Leaf Bookstore.

Surfside Beach, Texas

This laid-back beach town features four miles of beautiful beaches for travelers to enjoy. Of course, no trip to Surfside Beach would be complete without catching some waves. The waters here are a surfer’s paradise since they offer consistent waves. Pick out some gear at one of the nearby surf shops, such as Surfside Surf Station.

At Surfside Jetty Park, travelers can try their hand at fishing or beachcombing, while Surfside Crabbing Pier is–you guessed it–a prime place for catching crustaceans. End the day with some grub at casual spots  Seahorse Bar & Grill, Jetty Shack, or Sharkies On The Beach.

Capitola, California

Just 10 minutes away from Santa Cruz, you’ll find the colorful oceanfront oasis of Capitola. This lesser-known but equally stunning beach town boasts bright-colored buildings, quaint shops, and mouthwatering eats.

Capitola Beach is a small, sandy beach with volleyball courts and benches. Here, you’ll also find the 855-foot-long Capitola Wharf, which is where you’ll also find the aptly named Wharf House Restaurant. If you prefer somewhere more low-key, check out Hooper Beach, a smaller, secluded section of Capitola Beach. Everything is within easy walking distance of downtown Capitola Village, which is chock-full of shops, galleries, and restaurants.

Dunedin, FL

Aerial view of Dunedin Causeway at Dunedin, FL

Dunedin is a tiny town about 10 minutes north of crowded Clearwater. The destination’s glistening blue-green waters will delight beach lovers of all ages. Caladesi Island State Park is one of Dunedin’s most famous stretches of sand. This secluded island, which is only accessible by boat, is renowned for its unspoiled beaches.

Craving some adventure? Embark on a kayaking excursion through the untouched mangrove forests. Honeymoon Island State Park, which boasts four miles of white-sand beaches, is also nearby. When you need a break from the beach (though, how could you?), make your way towards downtown Dunedin for a bite to eat. Options abound, from fresh Mexican cuisine at Casa Tina to sausages and hot dogs at Hot Dogs on Main. Lastly, the 90-acre Hammock Grove, which offers five miles of trails plus an abundance of flora and flora, is another must-visit.

Kure Beach, NC

Kure Beach is often overlooked in favor of the uber-popular Outer Banks, but don’t let that deter you from visiting. This tranquil beach town features one of the Atlantic’s oldest fishing piers, spanning 711 feet. Come here to fish, shop for souvenirs, grab a snack, or play at the arcade.

Alternatively, if you prefer to stay put and sprawl out on the sand, hit the beach or stroll along the boardwalk. You can’t skip town without checking out the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. The 287-acre state park is home to Fort Fisher, six miles of beaches and trails, and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

Gloucester, Massachusetts

Aerial view of Wingaersheek Beach at Gloucester, Massachusetts

The coastal city of Gloucester is located on Cape Ann and is famous for being America’s oldest fishing point. The destination offers an abundance of beaches. These include Good Harbor Beach (a small stretch of sand that’s great for swimming); Half Moon Beach (a crescent-shaped beach that feels like a secret hideaway); Cressy’s Beach (a rocky beach located in Historic Stage Fort Park); Pavilion Beach (a small, sandy beach near the famous Fisherman’s Memorial); Plum Cove Beach (a quiet beach that’s beloved by families); and Wingaersheek Beach (another family-friendly beach with calm waters and soft white sand).

To learn more about the city’s fascinating history, wander down the waterfront Gloucester HarborWalk. Or, for an even more unique experience, embark on a lobstering boat tour of the harbor. Finally, for a truly memorable trip, plan your visit around the five-day-long St. Peter’s Fiesta (June), which pays homage to the patron saint of fishing.

Grand Isle, Louisiana

Coastline at Grand Isle, Louisiana

Grand Isle is located on a narrow barrier island of the same name. The secluded town is often referred to as a “Sportsman’s Paradise” for its incredible fishing and birding opps. It’s also famous for its seven miles of serene, sugar-sand beaches, including those at Grand Isle State Park. Here, you’ll also find a fishing pier, nature trails, and ample wildlife viewing.

Once you work up an appetite, indulge in fresh seafood at Camardelle’s Seafood or Hurricane Hole. After, keep the tropical vacation vibes going steady with a daiquiri at Island Daiquiri or Pirate Island Daiquiri.

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

Ocean Springs is about two miles east of bustling Biloxi, yet it feels far from the crowds. This charming southern town is home to Front Beach, which has a pier, playground, and stunning views of the Gulf Islands. The shallow waters are perfect for swimming, too. Gulf Islands National Seashore, which spans a staggering 160 miles from Mississippi to Florida, draws millions of visitors for its serene blue-green waters. Birding, boating, hiking, fishing, swimming, and snorkeling are also popular.

Ocean Springs also boasts a vibrant downtown area that’s chock-full of exciting attractions, including breweries, boutiques, galleries, and gift shops galore.

Long Beach, Washington

Long Beach is known as the longest continuous beach in the United States, spanning around 28 miles. The town is also famous for its beautiful half-mile-long boardwalk, where you can admire views of North Lead Lighthouse or, if you’re lucky, spot some whales.

After, make your way to the walkable downtown area to check out small shops like Stormin Norman’s and Hobo Junction before grabbing a bite at Drop Anchor Seafood & Grill or The Chowder Stop. Other nearby attractions include the World Kite Museum, Cape Disappointment State Park, and The Discovery Trail. Lastly, try to plan your visit between April and October, when you can dig for razor clams, a regional specialty.

From a bustling port city in South Korea to an art lover’s oasis in the heart of the American southwest, read on for a few of our favorite cheap places to visit in 2022

Istanbul, Turkey

Located in both Europe and Asia, Istanbul is celebrated for its storied history. The Turkish capital is also known to be cheaper than other European metropolises, making it a popular travel destination for budget travelers. Istanbul is also home to dozens of museums and architectural wonders. The iconic Hagia Sophia, which dates back thousands of years, and the centuries-old Topkapı Palace, renowned for its Ottoman architecture, are both must-visits. To save money on admission, consider purchasing a Museum Pass and/or Welcome Card, which offers entry into an array of famous attractions at a steep discount. Explore the Grand Bazaar —where you can snap up affordable tokens from more than 4,000 shops — or walk along the pedestrian-friendly İstiklal Avenue, which boasts galleries, eateries, shops, bars, and nightclubs galore.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Arts and culture lovers should add Sante Fe, New Mexico, to their travel bucket list next year. New Mexico’s vibrant capital—which dates all the way back to 1610—is teeming with breathtaking pueblo-inspired architecture and affordable activities. And, the best part? Many of Santa Fe’s most notable attractions can be enjoyed at an ultra-affordable price. The Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the city’s most famous spots for shopping, people-watching, and dining. While you’re here, be sure to spend some time strolling through the city’s bustling and highly walkable downtown area. You can also wander through a handful of museums, including the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, New Mexico History Museum, and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. If you prefer interactive exhibits, head to the famed Meow Wolf, which is renowned for its multimedia offerings and innovative art installations. Lastly, don’t forget to go gallery hopping down Canyon Road in the city’s famed arts district.

Krabi, Thailand

Thailand is known for its low cost of living and wallet-friendly lodging options, and Krabi is the place to be if you’re craving a tropical beach vacay. Krabi tends to fly more under-the-radar than Phuket and Koh Samui, which means you’ll enjoy fewer crowds and lower prices. Plus, the destination is nothing short of idyllic with its postcard-worthy white-sand beaches, lush mangroves, and limestone rocks. Phra Nang Beach is one of the destination’s most popular beaches thanks to its picturesque surroundings, while Railay Beach attracts sun-seekers and rock climbers alike. If you need a break from the beach, head to the hilltop Wat Tham Suea (AKA Tiger Cave Temple), where you’ll climb more than 1,700 steps to reach a nearly 60-foot-tall Buddha statue. Meanwhile, Thung Teao Forest Natural Park is famous for its rich biodiversity and sparkling Emerald Pool, which—you guessed it—is known for its clear, jewel-toned waters.  Khao Kanab Nam is another highlight, with its limestone cliffs, fairytale-worthy caves, and lush greenery.

Adelaide, Australia

Move over, Sydney. Instead, consider visiting Adelaide, which has been named the country’s most affordable capital city. The Southern coastal city is packed with unique food and drink offerings, including Africola (Southern African BBQ) and Osteria Oggi (classic Italian). After your meal, wander your way through the Adelaide Central Market, which dates all the way back to 1870. Meanwhile, wine-lovers can venture out to one (or more!) of the 18 surrounding wine regions, including Adelaide Hills and the Barossa Valley. After you’ve had your fill of fine vintages, head to one of the nearby gardens for some respite. Admire beautiful flora at the Botanic Gardens of South Australia or the Japanese-inspired Himeji Garden. Alternatively, hit up one of the museums, such as the South Australian Museum and the Art Gallery of South Australia, among several others.

Busan, South Korea

Skyline and coast of Busan, South Korea

South Korea truly offers something for everyone, and, thanks to the excellent exchange rate, it makes a fabulous vacation destination for budget travelers. Busan, Korea’s second largest city, tends to attract fewer tourists than Seoul—making it a perfect option for those in search of a more laid-back locale. There’s plenty to do in this port city, from visiting the centuries-old Beomeosa Temple to exploring the more contemporary Sea Life Aquarium, to checking out the famous Bujeon Market, which is considered one of the country’s best. An abundance of hot springs, beaches, and mountains makes this city a haven for nature-lovers and beach-goers as well. Geumjeong Mountain offers incredible hiking, while Gwangali Beach is renowned for its buzzy bar scene. Gamcheon Culture Village is bursting with colorful houses, murals, shops, and eateries—plus fantastic mountain vistas.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest, one of the largest cities in the European Union (E.U.), is also one of the cheapest thanks to the low exchange rate. Historic attractions abound in this riverfront city, such as the Chain Bridge (which connects the Buda and Pest districts) and Heroes’ Square, which is home to the Millennium Monument. Take a ride up the funicular from Castle Hill to Old Town Buda, where you’ll be treated to amazing city views. Once you arrive in Old Town, check out the Budapest History Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery. Fisherman’s Bastion is an architecture lover’s dream come true, with storybook-worthy Neo-Romanesque courtyards and towers and beautiful views of the Danube River. Speaking of views, you’ll find some of the best along the Danube Promenade. Alternatively, take in the sites from the water via a river cruise. After, make your way to Budapest’s Central Market Hall, which is known for its colorful tilework, and central locale.

The capital of the U.S. is chock-full of free attractions, making it especially ideal for budget travelers and history buffs. Carve out some time to stroll the National Mall before wandering through the Smithsonian (AKA the world’s largest museum complex). DC On Foot offers free guided walking tours of the city, too. Other free must-sees include the Library of Congress, the National Archives Building, and the National Gallery of Art. Afterward, explore the charming neighborhood of Georgetown (stop for coffee and a cupcake at the beloved Baked & Wired which will cost you less than $10) followed by an afternoon at The Wharf, a swanky waterfront complex for shopping, strolling, dining, and kayaking—plus concerts and seasonal activities aplenty.

Bucharest, Romania

Romania is one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe.. The capital city, Bucharest, has been listed among the world’s most affordable cities, as well. The city has been nicknamed “Little Paris” for its stunning architecture. What’s more, the city certainly lives up to its playful moniker. The massive Palatul Parlamentului is an architectural masterpiece with more than 1,000 rooms. Old Town is oozing with historic charm. It’s also home to the National Museum of Romanian History, 19th century-era buildings, and plenty of food and drink options to choose from. The city is best explored on foot, and, fortunately, there are dozens of free walking tours to choose from (see here and here for some inspiration). The best part? Admission to top sites won’t cost more than $15 max.

Mérida, Mexico

The Yucatán capital is best known for its vibrant Mayan culture and white limestone buildings, earning it the nickname “The White City.”  Mérida is renowned for its incredible (and affordable!) culinary offerings, and it’s even been named a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO. Cheap eats (don’t miss Wayan’e, Maya de Asia, or MUGY) and wallet-friendly lodging options abound. The destination is also celebrated for its centuries-old architecture. The city’s primary hub, Plaza de la Independencia, is flanked by two colonial-era churches. Other landmarks include Casa de Montejo, a 16th century-era mansion-turned-museum, the Mayan World Museum of Mérida, and the mansions lining the Paseo de Montejo. The surrounding area is also home to several Mayan ruins and awe-inspiring cenotes (swimming holes), making Mérida a great jumping-off point.

Solo travel is incredibly enriching, and can afford you the opportunity to experience a destination in a completely new light. And, the best part? You won’t have to tailor your schedule around someone else’s.

So, take some much-needed “me” time by embarking on a solo vacation. Whether you prefer an action-packed city escape or a laid-back desert locale, these are the best solo travel destinations throughout the USA.

1. Hudson, New York

Aerial view of Hudson, New York
Visit Hudson NY

This eccentric upstate New York town — about two-and-a-half hours from The Big Apple by car — is a haven for art, design, and antique lovers. Warren Street is lined with cool shops like  Arenskjold Antiques Art, Artemesia, Bavier Book Antique Jewelry, Fig & Bella, Cooper and Company, and FACE Stockholm. After spending some time indulging in retail therapy, grab a bite at one of the nearby restaurants. Feast & Floret (a farm-to-table eatery with, you guessed it, plenty of fresh blooms), Rivertown Lodge (which boasts a savory, innovative menu with staples like halibut, beef tongue cavatelli, and duck), and Baba Louie’s (personal pizza) are among our favorites. Craving something on the lighter side? Visit Breadfolks Bakery for freshly baked pastries and coffee or Culture Cream for a scoop (or two!) of sorbet.

Where to Stay: The Wick, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is located in the heart of Hudson. The former candle factory-turned-boutique hotel (hence its name) has 55 guest rooms and suites, some of which feature clawfoot tubs.

Downtown Austin is best explored via kayak (see here for more information) or bike (scenic trails, such abound). On Sixth Street, pop into Esther’s Follies, where you can enjoy live magic, comedy, and dancing. Come nighttime, the bar-lined strip becomes even more vibrant. South Congress (AKA SoCo) tends to fly a bit more under-the-radar. Meanwhile, foodies can DIY their own food crawl by hitting up Austin’s best food trucks (the city is home to dozens of them!). Meanwhile, the now-bustling Seaport District is teeming with more mainstream features like brand-new skyscrapers, rooftop bars and restaurants, specially curated shops, and art galleries. The historic 2.5-mile Freedom Trail in downtown Boston is an absolute must. After, head to Back Bay and shop along Newbury Street. Then, wander through the North End (Boston’s version of Little Italy) and grab a cannoli at Mike’s Pastry (be prepared to wait in line!). If the weather is nice, rent a kayak and paddle down the Charles River before popping into Tatte, a local chain that serves up fresh pastries, brunch staples, and coffee.

Where to Stay: The 136-room Envoy Hotel offers hip and modern accommodations in the heart of the Seaport District. It’s hard to summarize everything to see, do, eat, and explore in our nation’s vibrant capital. The monuments and fascinating museums (which include The Smithsonian Institution, National Gallery of Art, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the International Spy Museum) are all (obvious) must-visits. But think beyond the basics by exploring some of DC’s best neighborhoods. Meanwhile, Logan Circle’s main strip, 14th Street, is dotted with restaurants, pubs, and shops. It also boasts stunning Victorian-era architecture.
