Few hotels embody New York City’s timeless elegance and grandeur quite like The Pierre. Gracing the corner of Fifth Avenue and 61st Street in Manhattan, The Pierre has hosted discerning celebrities, royalty, and dignitaries since 1930.

As you step into the gilded lobby, you can see the property’s design inspiration—the hotel’s architects modeled The Pierre after King Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles. Since then, numerous renovations have kept The Pierre up to the standards of modern travelers, but the hotel’s historic opulence remains—right down to the friendly old-fashioned elevator operators.

In 2005, The Pierre was acquired by Taj, an iconic hotel group, and now the property is officially known as The Pierre, a Taj Hotel.

The Location

Pierre Exterior with Car
The Pierre NY

The Pierre Hotel occupies prime real estate on the Upper East Side, directly across from Central Park. Its convenient and central Manhattan location puts guests just steps away from many of New York City’s most famous landmarks and attractions.

The Museum of Modern Art, Carnegie Hall, and Rockefeller Center are all within easy walking distance. Numerous subway stations are within a few blocks of the hotel should you wish to explore further afield, or the courteous doorman is always happy to hail guests a cab.

Dining

The Pierre has two eateries onsite, Perrine and Two E Bar and Lounge. If you’re feeling indulgent, room service is also available for hotel guests.

Perrine, the hotel’s signature restaurant, is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This upscale spot serves a farm-to-table menu that changes depending on what’s in season.

The Rose Terrace, Perrine’s open-air terrace, is the place to be in warmer months when guests can dine and people-watch on the busy Manhattan streets.

For lighter fare and drinks, guests can visit Two E Lounge (named for the hotel’s address at 2 East 61st Street). The elegant bar offers cocktails, light bites, and small plates and is open in the late afternoon through the evening.

Reserve a table at Two E Wednesday through Saturday between 6 – 9pm, when The Pierre offers free jazz performances by the artist-in-residence Antonio Ciacca and other notable musicians.

Although it’s not open to the public for dining, make sure you take a peek inside the Rotunda, The Pierre’s private event space. This circular room has garden scenes hand-painted across the walls, a vibrant blue-sky fresco-covered ceiling, and a grand winding staircase that would be perfect for a wedding or big celebration.

Amenities

The Pierre charges a daily facility fee of $34.43 which covers the following amenities:

  • Press reader access to electronic newspapers and magazines
  • Complimentary tea and coffee service in the lobby from 7 am to 9:30 am
  • Free WiFi
  • Bottled water

Other available amenities at The Pierre include:

  • Les Clefs d’Or Concierge
  • Valet parking
  • Laundry and dry cleaning services
  • Overnight shoeshine
  • Turndown service

A fairly well-sized gym is located on the third floor of The Pierre and is fully stocked with cardio equipment, free weights, and chilled bottled water.

The Pierre welcomes pets up to 15 pounds and will provide dog-friendly amenities for any canine guests. A daily fee of $75 per dog applies, and dogs are not allowed to be left unattended in rooms. The concierge can arrange pet-sitting services if needed.

The Rooms

Pierre Deluxe Room
The Pierre NY

Accommodations at The Pierre range from superior rooms to grand multi-room suites, all featuring the hotel’s signature comforts: Etro toiletries, Bose speakers, plush bathrobes, and custom slippers.

We stayed in a Pierre Deluxe room, which was surprisingly spacious for Manhattan at 300 square feet. This room type has an interior view overlooking city buildings, high ceilings, Turkish marble bathrooms, and (in another uncommon New York City hotel amenity) windows that actually open for a bit of fresh air.

If you’re looking for a view of Central Park, book a Park View room, Signature Park View room, Metropolitan Suite, or Deluxe Grand Suite, Park Suite, Getty Suite, Tata Suite, or Hutton Suite.

Grand Suites are the most luxurious in the hotel and are designed to feel like a residential apartment, with multiple rooms and custom furnishings.

Groups traveling together may want to consider the Tata Suite. This suite can be connected to four additional park view rooms and suites, making the 39th floor completely private and offering up to six bedrooms over 4,786 square feet.

Price and How to Book

Room rates start at around $850 per night for superior guestrooms and can be booked on Expedia. Packages are available that include continental breakfast at Perrine.

FAQ

Do all-inclusive resorts in the US include alcohol?

Many offer welcome cocktails or champagne, but for the rest of your stay, you will have to pay for alcoholic beverages. Some resorts have special packages you can book that will include alcohol. The resorts that include alcohol no matter how you book are:

  • The Clement Palo Alto
  • Sandpiper Bay Resort
  • The Ranch at Rock Creek
  • Bungalows Key Largo
  • Dunton Hot Springs

Is everything included at an all-inclusive resort?

Almost everything. Most include at least two meals (typically breakfast and dinner), your room, and most activities. Alcoholic beverages and spa treatments are usually an extra fee, as are specialized activities. Be sure to check with the resort you are booking at to see what exactly is included in your package.

Do you tip at an all inclusive resort?

Unless it is explicitly stated at the time of booking that tips are included, you should tip while staying at an all-inclusive resort, although it is not required.

Does all-inclusive mean unlimited drinks?

As mentioned above, some US all-inclusive resorts do include alcoholic beverages, but most only include water, soda, tea and coffee.

Is it wise to go to an all-inclusive resort?

For a lot of families and couples traveling, going to an all-inclusive resort is the best way to go, as that way, the trip is already paid for when you get there, and there are no surprises. It is easier to save for an all-inclusive stay since you know exactly what you will spend.

Are all-inclusive resorts worth it?

The short answer is yes, they are, if you are looking for a resort vacation. Having everything paid for, and all of your activities during your vacation in one place may be the perfect vacation for some people. Vermont’s Green Mountains are a quintessential New England vacation destination year-round, drawing skiers in the winter and hikers in the summer. One thing the Green Mountain State has been sorely lacking, however, is a truly great boutique luxury hotel—until now.

The recent opening of The Weston in the charming village of Weston, Vermont, changes that, adding an intimate five-star hotel option for discerning vacationers. From the outside, The Weston looks like a grand old house, much like any other nearby. However, once you step inside, you know you’re somewhere special.

The Weston is run by the Sharp family, seasoned hoteliers involved with iconic properties like New York City’s The Carlyle and California’s Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The Sharps bring an attention to detail that’s noticeable in the small touches around the property like the oil diffusers delicately scenting the air or the hand warmers offered by staff after a guest mentions plans to go skiing.

The Location

Weston VT Exterior
The Weston

Perfectly situated in the middle of Weston’s Main Street and right down the street from the famous Vermont Country Store, The Weston places guests in the heart of this storybook Vermont village.

The Weston provides a convenient home base for adventurous travelers looking to get outside. It’s a short drive from four of Vermont’s best ski resorts (Bromley, Magic Mountain, Stratton, and Okemo) for snowy vacations, and it’s also near countless hiking trails for warmer weather trips.

The Weston Theater Company is a short drive away for guests seeking a taste of Vermont culture.

Dining

Weston VT Wineroom
The Weston

The Weston is home to one of the best new restaurants in Vermont, The Left Bank. Helmed by executive chef Bretton Combs, who previously worked with famous chefs Emeril and Cat Cora, The Left Bank draws as many locals for special occasion dinners as hotel guests.

The dining room retains the original charm and warmth of the historic space, with rich wood beams and stone hearths contrasting crisp white linens and gleaming silver. Historic photos offer a peek into the hotel and town’s past, establishing a firm sense of place. The menu draws inspiration from French cuisine, with flavors enhanced by fresh regional produce and proteins sourced from the area’s farmers, cheese makers, and orchards. An expertly curated wine cellar offers unique, hard-to-find wines worldwide, selected specifically to complement Chef Combs’ seasonally evolving dishes. Many of the wines are available by the glass, allowing guests to sample from under-the-radar regions like Slovenia.

The Rooms

Weston VT Room
The Weston

Although The Weston retains the charm of a traditional bed and breakfast, the amenities here are firmly of the five-star variety. Rooms are stocked with high-end amenities, including generously sized Lafco Feu de Bois and Diptyque toiletries, Dyson hairdryers, clothes steamers, Frette robes, and Frette slippers.

With just eight rooms (five standard rooms and three suites), The Weston feels like an intimate country estate. Each guest room features carefully curated furnishings like four-poster beds, plush lounge chairs, and cozy rugs.  Modern necessities aren’t left out, with iPad controllers, Nespresso machines, and fast WiFi available in every room.

The property’s crown jewel is secreted away in the historic Mill Building just next door to the main hotel—suite eight. This spacious suite measures 845 square feet and feels more like a luxury apartment than a hotel room. Inside, a separate sitting room beckons travelers with a roaring gas fireplace outlined with whimsical hand-painted tiger tiles, rich rugs, a desk, and a comfortable chaise.

In the next room, the grand master bedroom has a second gas fireplace at the foot of the four-poster bed, his-and-her closets, and windows overlooking the peaceful Vermont scenery. Continuing onward, you’ll find a custom wet bar fully stocked with an assortment of full-sized liquor bottles, a mini fridge with wine for a nightcap and local cream for your morning cocktails, and a variety of local snacks. The opulent bathroom is one of the largest we’ve ever seen, with two marble vanities, a soaking tub, and a wet room with dual rainfall showers.

The Fitness Center

Weston VT Gym
The Weston

The Mill Building also houses The Weston’s fitness center, which is open 24 hours a day. This small but well-stocked gym features free weights, cardio equipment, mats, and complimentary bottles of Smartwater and fresh fruit. A separate yoga studio can be booked for private classes.

The Spa

After a long day on the slopes or trails, The Spa at The Weston provides a welcome place to unwind. The spa’s extensive treatment menu offers indulgent massages conducted on a heated table and customizable facials utilizing luxury European skincare brand Natura Bisse. Continue the relaxation after your treatment with a session in the cedar-lined sauna.

Price and How to Book

Room rates at The Weston start at around $400 per night and can be booked on Expedia.

Want to stay in shape on vacation without having to spend half your morning at the hotel gym? With this hotel room workout exercise routine, all you need is 20 minutes to get a full-body workout. And best of all, you don’t need any gym equipment, so you can leave your yoga mat at home.

2. Tricep Dips: (works chest, deltoids, triceps, and upper back)

Steps: Place your hands at the edge of a chair or bed shoulder-width apart, with your feet out in front of you.  Keeping your back straight, bend your elbows back until they reach a 90-degree angle, and then raise up by fully extending your arms.

Modified Tricep Dip: Sit on the floor with your knees at a 90-degree angle. Place your arms directly behind you, and bend from the elbow to dip backward and up.

3. Single-Leg Stand (works core, glutes, hamstrings and quads)

Steps: Sit on a chair with both feet on the floor. Elevate one leg, and lean forward using your working leg and core to stand up. Sit back down and repeat.

Steps: Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Lower down until your hips and knees are parallel, then come up and repeat.

5. Hip Hinge (works core and lower back)

Modified Hip Hinge: Sit on a chair or bed with both feet on the floor, and follow the same steps.

6. Leg Lifts, Front, Back, & Side (works core, glutes, and hip flexors)

After one set repeat exercise to the side, and then to the back. Adjust the height of the leg lift to modify.

7. Standing Bicycle Crunch (works core and obliques)

Steps: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, fingertips behind your head, and elbows pointing outward, in line with your shoulders. Bring your right leg up and twist the left side of your body to the right, bringing your opposing knee and elbow together at the torso. Continue by alternating sides.

Modified Bicycle Crunch: Place one hand against the wall for balance and do a set on one side before switching.

8. Plank (works core and lower back)

Steps: Go into a push-up position, or, bend your elbows and rest your weight on your forearms, keeping your back flat and core tight. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds.

Modified Plank: Follow the same steps, only this time with your knees touching the floor.

9. Side Plank (works core and obliques)

Steps: Lie on your side with your body in a straight line. Extend your forearm out, with your elbow lined up slightly below your shoulder. Keeping your hips square and your neck in line with your spine, push yourself up so that your palm is supporting your weight. Hold for 30 seconds and lower, then switch sides.

Modified Side Plank: Follow the same steps using your forearm to hold yourself up.

10. Heel Raises (works calves)

Steps:  Raise your heels off the floor while keeping your knees straight. Hold, and then lower your heels to the floor.

The festive celebrations of the holiday season are over, and there are still a lot of cold, dark winter months left to get through. Fortunately, you have a fresh slate of vacation days at work now that it’s a new year— which means January is the perfect time to travel.

Whether you want to embrace the snow and head to the mountains or seek the sun in a tropical destination, there are plenty of good options. These are the best places to travel in January.

Barbados

Cobblers Cove
Cobblers Cove

If you need a dose of sunshine to make it through the rest of the winter, head to Barbados, one of the warmest destinations in the Caribbean in January. Average temperatures hover around 82 degrees, and the seawater is nearly as balmy. January is also one of the drier months in this tropical destination so you can soak in lots of sun without a rain cloud in sight.

Where to Stay: For a boutique escape, stay at Cobblers Cove, an intimate hotel with just 40 suites. Cobblers Cove sources all its furniture and fittings from local craftworkers and does not serve food that has to be flown in; instead, it focuses on utilizing locally grown items in its on-site restaurant.

Thailand

Peninsula Bangkok
The Peninsula

Warm without being too hot and with minimal rain—January is one of the best times of the year to visit Thailand. If you’re looking to island-hop through Thailand’s stunning beaches, stick to the Phuket and Krabi areas, which experience mostly sunshine during January. Avoid the southeastern coast, where it’s rainier this time of year.

Where to Stay: The luxurious Peninsula Bangkok offers a quiet escape from the busy city. The three-tiered outdoor swimming pool overlooking the Chao Phraya River is a highlight of the property.

Canary Islands

Hotel Cordial Morgan Playa
Cordial Hotels

Going for a swim on January 1st is a New Year’s tradition on the beach of Las Canteras in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. With water temperatures around 70 degrees, this is a much more pleasant experience than the polar plunge rituals found elsewhere around the world.

The Canary Islands see over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, so if you want to replenish your Vitamin D stores for the winter, this is the perfect vacation spot.

Where to Stay: For a unique stay, book a room at the Hotel Cordial Morgan Playa, which is built on the site of an ancient necropolis and features an on-site archeological park. Hotel staff wear traditional Canarian attire as their uniforms, adding to the authentic feel.

Belize

Turneffe Island Resort
Turneffe Resort

Located a relatively short nonstop flight from many American hubs, Belize is one of the closest and most affordable destinations for hot weather.  Daytime temperatures in January are usually around 80 degrees and nighttime temperatures generally don’t dip below 70 degrees.

This tropical destination is relatively cheap, even in peak season, and you can often find great flight deals.

Where to Stay: Set on a peaceful private island 30 miles southeast of Belize City, Turneffe Island Resort offers all-inclusive luxury.

Key West, Florida

Southernmost Beach Resort
Southernmost Beach Resort

You don’t have to venture outside the United States to find warm temperatures in January. Head south to Key West, Florida, where temperatures average 75 degrees even in the dead of winter.

January is also when the annual Mile 0 Festival is held, a lively five-day musical event featuring concerts, themed cruises, and pool parties.

Where to Stay: The Southernmost Beach Resort’s central location on Duval Street will put you in the heart of all the action, plus has a private beach (a rarity in Key West).

Hokkaido, Japan

Hoshino Resorts Tomamu The Tower
Hoshino Resorts Tomamu

Japan’s ski season typically peaks from mid-January to late February, when there’s an incredible amount of snowfall in the mountains. Hokkaido is one of the best snowsports destinations in Japan, and is a bucket list destination for serious skiers.

Ski resorts tend to be pricier (and more crowded) over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, so January is a good time to find deals and fewer lift lines. In Hokkaido, you’ll also find plenty of Onsens, or hot springs, to warm up in after a day on the slopes.

Where to Stay: Hoshino Resorts Tomamu The Tower is a ski-in ski-out hotel and has its own on-site onsen, so you never have to leave the property.

You can find cozy, convenient places to stay for $50, $20, or even for free, in destinations around the world—as long as you know where to look. Aside from airfare, lodging is typically the expense that takes the biggest bite out of a vacation budget. But there’s no need to rack up hotel stays for $100 to $200 a night or more. If you’re willing to consider alternatives to hotels, you could pay a fraction of that price—or nothing at all.

Below, we review 10 hotel alternatives and evaluate the pros and cons of each. Read on to see if these affordable alternatives to hotels are something you’ll dig or want to dump.

Short-Term Room Rentals

This is a popular and ever-growing trend in the travel world—a cross between vacation rentals and homestays. Using websites like Airbnb, Homestay, and 9flats, you can rent a room in someone’s house, a cottage, or a private studio apartment for low nightly rates—it’s not uncommon to see prices under $50 per night. It’s a way for hosts to open up their homes and make a little extra money while giving travelers a great deal and a local’s-eye view of a destination.

Dig It
Do you love the chance to meet people, see how they live, maybe play a midnight game of Scrabble or Call of Duty? Although you may score a cottage all by yourself, the cheaper options are usually a small bedroom with a shared bath. If that’s cool with you, a short-term room rental could be your thing.

Dump It
If uncertainty keeps you awake at night, you may sleep better at a chain hotel.

Religious Housing

Depending on where you’re traveling, there may be affordable lodging offered by religious organizations, such as convents and monasteries in Italy (check out Monastery Stays). An internet search or a visit to the local tourist board’s website can help you find these options.

Dig It
If you’re looking for a calm, quiet environment—perhaps even with a private bathroom, as Monastery Stays promises—religious housing may be for you. Many even welcome children with open arms and often have larger rooms set aside for families.

Dump It
Your room will be clean and functional, but if you want luxury, look elsewhere. The same goes if your kids are hellions, accustomed to running up and down halls screaming at the top of their lungs. Also, if you’re a night owl who likes to party into the wee hours, chances are you’ll miss curfew and be locked out. Finally, not all religious accommodations will accept unmarried couples.

Hostels

Though they’re commonly known as “youth” hostels, these can be an excellent hotel alternative for budget travelers of any age. Even if you’re not up for the cheapest option—a bed in a shared dorm—you can often get a basic private room at a hostel for significantly less than the cost of a low-end hotel.

Dig It
Hostels are perfect for the unscheduled traveler or backpacker, and for those who are up for an adventure—read: those who don’t mind plenty of company. They often have communal kitchens for those interested in making their own meals.

Dump It
Some hostels can be sketchy—lacking not only privacy but also safety. Consider checking sites such as TripAdvisor or Hostelworld for reviews and recommendations. Also, check whether the property is a member of Hostelling International, a U.K.-based nonprofit organization with thousands of properties worldwide that meet a minimum standard of cleanliness and safety.

Homestays

Sleeping in someone’s spare bedroom, or on a living room couch, is by far one of the cheapest ways to travel. In many cases, it’s free, and it’s also a great way to meet locals. You can organize a homestay through long-established hospitality networks like Servas International, or check out sites like Couchsurfing.

Dig It
If “life is an adventure” is your motto, then this mode of traveling is for you. You stand the chance of meeting interesting people and getting a close-up look at local life. Servas International is social and socially conscious, encouraging members to get involved in their hosts’ communities. Just super-social? Go with a Couchsurfing-type option.

Dump It
You must be trusting and trustworthy, flexible and friendly, for homestays to be an appropriate choice for you. You also have to be patient—the Servas interview process takes about three weeks. CouchSurfing is looser and much more in touch with social media, providing plenty of opportunities to connect with locals and other travelers.

Vacation Rentals

A Paris apartment, a villa in the Caribbean, a log cabin in Vermont … vacation rentals offer unique and affordable lodging around the globe. Because they tend to be more spacious than hotel rooms, they’re a particularly good bargain for families and groups who can divvy up the cost. And having your own kitchen can save you big bucks on restaurants. Sites to try to include TripAdvisor and Vrbo. And make sure to read up about whether vacation rentals are right for you.

Dig It
The many options in the vacation rental world mean that this choice is great for a variety of trips. If you appreciate the convenience and savings of having a kitchen and a laundry room during your trip, then a vacation rental could be for you. And if you’re traveling with a group of friends or family, having everyone gathered in one home can be priceless.

Dump It
If there’s going to be a fight over who gets the master suite, avoid holiday havoc by checking the floor plan of your rental and deciding ahead of time who gets which room. A rental agreement is a binding contract, so if there’s a chance your vacation plans may change, stick with a cancellable hotel reservation.

Academic Housing

When students go home for the summer, many colleges and universities open their dorms to visitors. Expect very affordable but very basic accommodations (bathrooms may be down the hall, for example). There are few central databases of these type of lodgings—UniversityRooms is one to try—but it’s worth calling a few local campuses directly to see if anything might be available during your trip. Your destination’s tourist board may also be able to help.

Dig It
Restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues often surround college campuses, so there should be plenty of action nearby.

Dump It
Most college kids are hard on their dormitories, so you shouldn’t expect shiny new carpets, furniture, or finishings. Elevators and air conditioning are uncommon in older buildings, too.

Farmstays

From rural B&Bs to working ranches and cattle farms, this type of stay can cover a wide range of accommodations—and you don’t necessarily have to be willing to milk a cow to take advantage of it. Farmstays are particularly popular in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Dig It
If you think you might enjoy waking with the sun to feed a bottle to a lamb or cornmeal to chickens, a farmstay may be right for you. You could enjoy a hearty breakfast, learn to make cheese or spin wool. The quiet, bucolic setting is perfect for relaxation, catching up on reading, or finishing handicraft projects.

Dump It
It can get very quiet, especially in the evening—so if you’re a night owl, your only companions may be the mice. These types of lodging can vary widely, though if you’re traveling in Europe or Down Under, you’ll have more choice than in the United States. If you need to know exactly what you’re getting, then farmstays may not be for you.

B&Bs with Shared Bathrooms

Bed-and-breakfasts can often save you money over hotel rooms, especially if you’re willing to use a bathroom down the hall. And it may be less inconvenient than you think: Sometimes the room you’re supposed to share a bathroom with might not even be booked—giving you the facilities all to yourself.

Dig It
The coziness and camaraderie of a B&B appeal to many travelers—enough to overlook the possibility of having to share a bathroom. You’ll save not only on accommodations but also on meals since breakfast is covered.

Dump It
B&Bs, especially those with shared bathrooms, may lack modern amenities such as flat-screen televisions or multiple outlets for charging electronics. And for travelers who aren’t particularly social, having to show up at a group breakfast with strangers can feel like a chore.

Camping

Sleeping under the stars can be a magical experience, and it’s one of the cheapest options on this list, especially if you cook your own meals over a campfire instead of eating in restaurants every night. And don’t worry, you can opt for cabins or luxury tent camps (i.e., glamping) if you’d rather not be slapping mosquitoes away all night.

Dig It
Camping is a great choice for anyone seeking a digital detox. A campfire beneath the night sky can be relaxing and mesmerizing; you won’t miss your TV or tablet. And you can’t beat a perfectly toasted marshmallow as a bedtime snack.

Dump It
Cooking a meal over a camp stove or fire, washing dishes in a bucket, waking up to rain-soaked sleeping bags—those who choose camping should be open to doing without a few comforts and conveniences.

Home Exchange

Swapping houses with another traveler is an ideal way to enjoy the comforts of home while traveling, and it’s practically free. To become a member of a home exchange network, you’ll typically pay an annual fee that costs about as much as a night in a hotel room, so after the first couple of nights of your vacation, your membership has paid for itself and then some. Learn more in SmarterTravel’s how-to guide to home exchanges.

Dig It
All the conveniences of home—kitchen with all the gadgets, laundry with detergent, Wi-Fi—and usually, a location away from tourist traps and traffic. What’s not to love?

Dump It
There’s always a chance something might happen (power outage, burst pipe, the homeowner’s angry ex banging on the door at 3 a.m.) and there’s no one around to take responsibility except you. Home exchange isn’t for the worried traveler: Will I break something? Will they trash my house? Am I safe in their home? Is my grandmother’s china safe in my home? If these concerns keep you up at night, do yourself a favor and sleep in a hotel.

As a professional travel writer, I love planning vacations—but sometimes it can feel like work, especially for off-the-beaten-path trips requiring lots of research. So, as the ultimate gift to myself, I decided to turn over all the control for an upcoming vacation to bespoke tour operator Journeysmiths.

The trip was to celebrate my birthday, and I decided I wanted to spend it hiking the iconic W Trek in Chile, a destination that had been on my bucket list for a long time. This multi-day trek in remote Torres del Paine National Park required a lot of logistics. Options for hotels and transportation are sparse in that part of the world, so everything needed to be booked months in advance, but I struggled to find updated information online on accommodation and trails.

I trusted Journeysmiths with my trip because of the company’s extensive experience in wild places and its commitment to giving back to the communities they travel within. With limited vacation time to spend on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, I wanted to go with a company that would get every aspect of the trip right the first time.

The Benefits of a Custom Trip

The guidance I gave Journeysmiths was simple: I wanted to do the W Trek in Torres del Paine, Chile, and I wanted to do it without camping (or sleeping in the hostel-style refugios available along the way). Although camping is the traditional way to do the trek, I wanted a little bit of luxury at night—and I wanted to enjoy the hike with a light daypack rather than hauling cooking supplies and sleeping gear on my back the entire way.

The team at Journeysmiths carefully considered my desires and pulled together a rough itinerary as a starting point, outlining potential hikes and activities, plus two hotels perfectly positioned near the W Trek.

Caroline Morse-Teel

Once I had the proposed plan, I was able to work back and forth with my Journeysmiths’ trip designer to add in things I wanted to do—like kayaking on Lago Grey—and take out things that didn’t interest me (like horseback riding) until we had everything just right.

Unlike with a regular tour, I wasn’t locked into any preplanned itinerary or defined dates and could do exactly what interested me when I wanted to do it, such as scheduling the iconic Base Towers hike for my actual birthday.

I’m used to having to be the person who figures out a solution if something goes wrong on a trip, so it was reassuring to have Journeysmiths’ 24/7 emergency line available if needed. When my kayaking excursion was canceled due to weather, for example, I didn’t have to worry about getting a refund—Journeysmiths handled it all for me.

The Trip

Torres del Paine National Park sprawls over 700 square miles. To reach the park from the United States, I had to fly to Santiago, Chile, and then take a three-hour domestic flight to Puerto Natales, a tiny airport with just one gate. From there, it was a two-hour drive to reach the park.

The remoteness adds to the park’s beauty but makes it difficult to get around unless you want to rent a car and navigate the unpaved roads yourself. Instead, Journeysmiths booked me into two all-inclusive hotels on the park’s borders, Hotel Las Torres and Rio Serrano Hotel + Spa, which could arrange transfers to and from the airports, the hotels, and the trailheads along the W Trek.

Since there aren’t any restaurants (outside of hotels) anywhere near the park, an all-inclusive package is a smart option in Torres del Paine. Food and drink at hotels are expensive (due to the isolated location), and opting for the all-inclusive deal can help you plan out your budget by knowing exactly how much you’ll spend ahead of time.

My trip began with three nights at Hotel Las Torres, a family-run hotel built on a private reserve surrounded by the national park. The hotel’s main appeal is its location, which sits directly on the trail to the most famous hike in the park, Mirador Las Torres. Hotel Las Torres is within walking distance of several trails, so you can head out on solo hikes instead of joining a group tour.

From Las Torres, I did Mirador Las Torres and a few side hikes that aren’t on the W Trek but are definitely worth a visit: Los Cuernos Viewpoint and Salto Grande Waterfall.

Los Cuernos Viewpoint in Patagonia, Chile

For the second half of my trip, I moved to Rio Serrano Hotel & Spa, a luxurious retreat just across the river from the national park’s boundary. If you want to treat yourself after a hard day of hiking, this is one of the best resorts in Torres del Paine. This beautiful resort overlooks the Paine Massif, so guests can sit and gaze out the large picture windows at the snow-capped mountains.

Rio Serrano’s spa is a true gift following a hard day of hiking. After braving the fierce wind Patagonia is famous for, the two saunas (wet and dry) felt like heaven. The indoor heated pool, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the mountains, is equipped with jacuzzi chairs and waterfall massagers to help guests unwind.

Rio Serrano was the perfect base to explore the French Valley, another iconic hike along the W Trail with incredible scenery. It’s also close to Lago Grey, where I sailed practically within touching distance of the massive Grey Glacier on a boat tour.

I had built a buffer day into my schedule in case bad weather interfered with one of the hikes I wanted to do, but since I was fortunate with the conditions, I ended up with one free day at the end of our itinerary.

I asked my personable Rio Serrano hiking guide, Andres, what he would recommend as an under-the-radar hike in Torres del Paine National Park. He directed me to the Ferrier Lookout, a steep and challenging half-day hike that rewards walkers with stunning views of Grey Lake and the Southern Patagonian ice fields, the massifs, and the Paine River. Located in the western part of Torres del Paine, this hike offered a different perspective than I’d had for most of the trip and ended up being one of our favorites.

Having Journeysmiths take care of all the travel planning didn’t take away any of the spontaneity I love about travel—it simply removed all the logistical headaches and trip prep and meant I could have the exact trip I wanted without any of the hassles, making it feel like a true vacation.

One hike in Torres del Paine National Park is the most famous of all—Mirador Las Torres. Three massive towers loom over a glacial lake, and the jagged peaks can be seen from most vantage points around the park, making them an iconic symbol of the area. Although summiting the towers requires some serious rock-climbing skills, the 12.5-mile hike to the base of the towers can be done by anyone with a decent level of fitness.

Put yourself in the best position to tackle the hike by staying at Las Torres, a hotel at the start of the Mirador Las Torres trail. Las Torres sits on a reserve surrounded by Torres del Paine National Park and is located past the entrance to the park—so you can cut a bit of mileage off the trail—and start the hike before the park opens, allowing you to beat the crowds to the iconic viewpoint at the end.

The Location

Las Torres is ideally situated at the entrance to the famous W and O trekking circuits within Torres del Paine National Park. Although the hotel is not actually located within the park (it’s on a privately owned ecological reserve), it feels like it is.

Las Torres is surrounded by pristine wilderness and has the benefit of offering access to several trails without needing a car (a rarity in Patagonia).

Sustainability

It’s important to preserve an environment as precious as Torres del Paine National Park, and the Las Torres team works to minimize tourism’s impact on the area. The hotel partners with several nonprofits on various ecological initiatives—for example, working with ConservationVIP to help support trail maintenance around the park and within the reserve and AMA Torres del Paine on reforestation efforts.

The hotel has eliminated single-use plastics in favor of sustainable items such as the copper reusable straws found in the bar.

All-Inclusive Program

You can book just a room at Las Torres or purchase the all-inclusive package, which includes:

  • Transfers to and from Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, or Calafate
  • Torres del Paine National Park entrance fee
  • All meals and drinks (excluding premium alcohol)
  • Guided tours and transportation
  • WiFi
  • 20 percent off of spa treatments

The Rooms

Two types of rooms are available at Las Torres: Junior Suites and Superior Rooms. We stayed in a Superior Room, which overlooks the Base Towers trail, so you can watch as hikers begin and end their journey just outside your window.

The superior rooms are spacious and comfortable, with radiator heating and windows that open. Free WiFi is available in all rooms.

Excursions

Las Torres offers 11 full-day and 10 half-day tours around the national park area. Not all excursions are available every day, so you’ll begin your trip by meeting with an excursion guide and choosing the activities you want to do during your stay.

There are a variety of options to choose from, including hiking, horseback riding, and driving tours.

Dining

Two people laughing at the dinner table at Las Torres Patagonia Hotel

There are two dining options at Las Torres. The Coirón Restaurant offers a buffet breakfast in the morning and leisurely multi-course dinners in the evening. For a quicker bite to eat or a celebratory post-hike cocktail, the loungey Bar Pionero serves more casual food for lunch and dinner.

Helmed by award-winning mixologist Federico Gil, Bar Pionero continues Las Torres’ commitment to sustainability. Gil recycles glass bottles and turns them into glassware for the bar. The hotel even makes its own gin and beer from locally sourced ingredients.

Both restaurants utilize food from the hotel’s on-site greenhouses, which grow a variety of vegetables and herbs.

Price and How to Book

Rates for the all-inclusive program start at $1,960 per person for a two-night package (based on double occupancy) and can be booked through Las Torres’ website. Room-only rates start at approximately $790 per night and can be booked on Expedia.

We arranged our tour through Journeysmiths, a custom tour operator, which handled the hotel booking and trip arrangements for a seamless trip.
