FAQ

Do all-inclusive resorts in the US include alcohol?

Many offer welcome cocktails or champagne, but for the rest of your stay, you will have to pay for alcoholic beverages. Some resorts have special packages you can book that will include alcohol. The resorts that include alcohol no matter how you book are:

  • The Clement Palo Alto
  • Sandpiper Bay Resort
  • The Ranch at Rock Creek
  • Bungalows Key Largo
  • Dunton Hot Springs

Is everything included at an all-inclusive resort?

Almost everything. Most include at least two meals (typically breakfast and dinner), your room, and most activities. Alcoholic beverages and spa treatments are usually an extra fee, as are specialized activities. Be sure to check with the resort you are booking at to see what exactly is included in your package.

Do you tip at an all inclusive resort?

Unless it is explicitly stated at the time of booking that tips are included, you should tip while staying at an all-inclusive resort, although it is not required.

Does all-inclusive mean unlimited drinks?

As mentioned above, some US all-inclusive resorts do include alcoholic beverages, but most only include water, soda, tea and coffee.

Is it wise to go to an all-inclusive resort?

For a lot of families and couples traveling, going to an all-inclusive resort is the best way to go, as that way, the trip is already paid for when you get there, and there are no surprises. It is easier to save for an all-inclusive stay since you know exactly what you will spend.

Are all-inclusive resorts worth it?

The short answer is yes, they are, if you are looking for a resort vacation. Having everything paid for, and all of your activities during your vacation in one place may be the perfect vacation for some people. The costs that can incur while you are on vacation are many, so knowing exactly what you are paying can be a relief to some, and make it well worth the money.

With inflation on the rise, it can feel impossible to get out of the grocery store for under a few hundred bucks, let alone book an all-inclusive vacation package—with airfare—for less than $500.

Fortunately, if you know where to look, there are actually plenty of vacation packages under $500 available that include food, drinks, hotel, and even flights. Follow these tips to find an ultra-cheap vacation deal.

Book Early (Or Last-Minute)

Person using a smartphone and laptop to book a hotel room

When it comes to booking an all-inclusive vacation package, you’ll find the best deals if you either book early or at the last-minute. Many resorts will offer early booking bonuses to entice vacationers into locking in plans. Flights will also be cheaper the earlier in advance you book.

At the other end of the spectrum, all-inclusive resorts will generally slash rates in an effort to fill unsold rooms the closer it gets to an arrival date. If you can be flexible, you can find some amazing last-minute deals a week or two before departure.

The Best Sites for Finding All-Inclusive Vacation Packages With Airfare Under $500

There are a number of all-inclusive vacation websites that have sections showcasing deals under $500, making them a great place to start your search. Here are a few of our favorites:

Don’t forget to check out our round-up of the best all-inclusive vacation packages with airfare under $500 here as well.

Check Discount Travel Sites

Sign up for emails from Groupon and Travelzoo (or just check their websites weekly), as both discount sites frequently feature all-inclusive vacation packages with airfare for under $500.

Groupon has an air-inclusive trips section on its site that at the time of writing promoted a Hawaii vacation with air for $499 and a Bogota vacation with air for $399.

Likewise, Travelzoo’s Top 20 weekly deals recently featured a $499 Los Cabos vacation deal that included meals, drinks, and flights.

Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America are usually the cheapest destinations for all-inclusive packages and a good starting point for your search.

These destinations usually have inexpensive airfare from the United States (especially if you live in the south) and all-inclusive resorts that tend to be reasonably priced as well.

Sign Up for Emails From All-Inclusive Resorts

Most all-inclusive resort chains frequently run sales throughout the year. You’ll often see discounted vacation packages for under $500, or even deals which throw in the airfare for free.

The best way to stay on top of these discounts is to sign up for emails—or follow the brands on social media—from the resort chains.

Some of the best all-inclusive resort brands to start with are:

Google Explore + SmarterTravel Hotels

Sometimes, putting together an all-inclusive vacation on your own can be cheaper than buying a package deal. Use Google Explore to find inexpensive flights from your home airport to anywhere in the world, and then scan SmarterTravel Hotels (SmarterTravel’s sister site) to score a great price on an all-inclusive resort.

Travel in the Off-Season

You’ll have the best luck finding all-inclusive vacation packages with airfare for under $500 if you can travel off-peak. This means avoiding the spring break period at all cost, and instead traveling in May through November if you’re headed to popular destinations in Central America.

All-inclusive resorts are designed so that you can leave your worries behind. Your only job is to relax and not have to worry about paying for every drink or activity. But don’t get lulled into a false sense of security—there are five big mistakes that are easy to make at an all-inclusive that could ruin your trip.

Assuming Everything Is Included

All-inclusive includes everything, right? Maybe not. At some resorts, things like top-shelf alcohol, premium restaurants, and minibar drinks cost extra on top of the package rate. If you just assume that everything is all-inclusive and take advantage of all amenities, you could be surprised with a very high bill when you check out.

Goffkein | Adobe Stock

Overindulging

When there is an unlimited buffet of tempting food and drinks laid out 24/7, you might feel the need to try everything to get your money’s worth… which can leave you feeling sick and lethargic after the first day.

Instead of piling your plate with everything that looks good at each meal and downing five different types of brightly colored cocktails (and immediately regretting it when the heartburn and hangovers hit), try to look at your stay at an all-inclusive resort as a marathon, not a sprint.

You’ll have plenty of chances to try everything over the course of your stay, so save some treats to try later. You’ll feel better and enjoy your vacation more if you don’t overindulge on food and alcohol.

Never Leaving the Resort

When you’ve paid in advance for every drink, meal, and activity, leaving an all-inclusive resort can feel like a losing proposition. But if you never step foot outside of your hotel, will you really feel like you’ve visited the destination? Or will you feel as if your resort could have been located anywhere in the world?

Try to tear yourself away from your hotel and explore the surrounding area so you can get an idea of what the local culture is really like.

Woman relaxing by the pool on a clear day at an all-inclusive resort

Not Researching the Tipping Policy

Since everything is included, you might not bring any cash to your all-inclusive vacation—which could put you in an awkward situation if tips aren’t part of the package. Check with your hotel before traveling so that you don’t make an etiquette faux pas and accidentally stiff someone out of a much-earned gratuity.

The flip side of this is that at some resorts, such as Sandals, tipping is included in the hotel rate and most staff members are forbidden to accept gratuities—so trying to push cash on a helpful waiter could actually put them in a very uncomfortable situation.

Making an Enemy

All-inclusive resorts are designed so guests never have to leave the property—so you’re more likely to see the same people over and over again throughout your stay than at a standard hotel. Which could make things really uncomfortable if there’s someone you don’t want to run into, like the person you cut in line on your first day, or the guest who overheard you make a snide remark about their outfit at the pool.

Try to be on your best behavior and avoid making enemies at an all-inclusive resort, since there’s a high chance you’ll see them repeatedly throughout your trip.

There’s a lot to be said for the convenience of an all-inclusive vacation package. Paying for everything up front eliminates the potential for shock when the bill arrives at checkout time (something that families and other budget-conscious travelers will greatly appreciate). Choosing an all-inclusive resort in a place like California takes care of another common source of worry and one that has ruined many a vacation: bad weather. California has, for the most part, reliably blue skies throughout the majority of the year.

While it’s difficult to find many true all-inclusive resorts in the U.S. that compare to the type found in the Caribbean and Mexico, there are plenty of package deals that offer half board or at least make it possible to string together a complimentary breakfast with resort credits to cover additional meals. So, if you’re on the hunt for a fuss-free getaway to the Golden State, these all-inclusive package offers are some of California’s best.

Alila Ventana Big Sur, Big Sur

Common area with lit fireplace at Alila Ventana Big Sur
Alila Ventana Big Sur

It’s easy to see why California’s Big Sur has inspired some of America’s most celebrated artists and writers. And though room rates have certainly increased since Big Sur’s beatnik heyday, those craggy coastal views remain the same. See for yourself at Hyatt’s upscale Alila Ventana Big Sur, an adults-only resort perched on the cliffs between California’s famed Highway One and the Pacific. Alila Ventana is one of the few true all-inclusives in California, as room reservations cover all meals and snacks, including in-room dining, poolside, or at the guests-only restaurant, the Sur House. Also included in the price are activities like guided hikes, yoga, Tai Chi, group meditations, and even your own chauffeur to cart you to and from town or anywhere else within a three-mile radius.

Guests can choose between forest, ocean, meadow, or canyon view rooms with extras like wood-burning fireplaces, hot tubs, walk-in showers, and other amenities to help make for a cozy stay. Basic king rooms start at $2,100 and go up.

Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur

Exterior of the Pacific Suite at Post Ranch Inn
Post Ranch Inn

If your number one vacation objective is rest and relaxation—with an emphasis on rest—the Post Ranch Inn’s current Sleep Program will be right up your alley. The Big Sur resort has teamed up with sleep specialist Dr. Michael Breus to design a guest program aimed at improving sleep quality through diet, spa treatments, and more. Also included in the deal is dinner at the Sierra Mar, the property’s on-site restaurant, and access to Dr. Breus’s seven-part “sleep sessions” video series. In their waking hours, guests can take advantage of activities like yoga, meditation, sound baths, and—for an additional fee—falconry. Also reserved for guests is a fleet of Lexuses for quick jaunts around the area.

Visitors can add the sleep package to any stay of two nights or longer for an additional $1,200 and $900 more for additional guests in the same room.

Brisas del Mar, Inn at the Beach, Santa Barbara

Exterior of Brisas del Mar, Inn at the Beach surrounded by palm trees on a sunny day
Brisas del Mar, Inn at the Beach

Enjoy a wine-tasting weekend in Santa Barbara at the beachfront Brisas del Mar, Inn at the Beach. The intimate 39-room property offers a Wine Lovers Package which includes a guided tasting-tour of three wineries complete with a catered picnic lunch (weekends excluded). Guests also receive complimentary bottle of Chardonnay or Syrah from Santa Barbara Winery.

Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort and Club

Located in Orange County’s exclusive Dana Point, the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort and Club offers guests some of California’s best whale watching and one of the few private beach clubs in the southern half of the state. Guests can make use of beach club equipment such as paddleboards, boogie boards, and surfboards, while golfers may instead opt for the beachfront fairways of Monarch Beach Golf Links.

Currently travelers can book the Another Day in Paradise package, which offers guests a fourth night free during their stay. Another offer currently up for grabs, the Bed & Breakfast package includes an $80 daily credit for breakfast, either in-room or at one of the many restaurants on the property. This package starts at $710 per night for stays this upcoming spring.

Carneros Resort and Spa, Napa

The cutesy clusters of cottages that make up Carneros Resort and Spa are the absolute antithesis to the mega-resort style accommodations so prevalent in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Cottages are roomy and include private outdoor space, fireplaces, outdoor showers and tubs, on-demand wine, and other frills. Full-sized vacation homes are also scattered throughout the resort village, ideal for big families or larger gatherings. There are a number of package stays to choose from such as the Arrive Early & Stay Late deal. That’ll get you a daily breakfast for two along with early check-in and late check-out, plus a room upgrade. As you might have guessed, wine-on-demand and concierge service doesn’t come cheap, with this package starting at $1,050.

The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, Dana Point

Spend a weekend or more at the upscale Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel beachfront resort and reconnect with loved ones. The resort’s Reconnect package includes daily breakfast for two guests in-room or at either of its two restaurants and a generous daily resort credit to put towards lunch, dinner, or other services. Just how much you receive in resort credit depends on the room type you book: Guestrooms earn $100 resort credit per day, Club Level rooms receive $200 in resort credit per day, and Suites receive $300 in daily resort credit.

Also included in the package is a 45-minute photo shoot with the Ritz-Carlton photo concierge. This package starts at $699 per night and is valid for travel through December 31, 2023.
