If you’ve become accustomed to speeding through airport security as a TSA PreCheck member, it can be really frustrating to download your boarding pass and not see the green check mark.

In some cases, this is a mistake that can be easily rectified if you know what to do. In other situations, there’s nothing you can do to get expedited screening. Here’s what you need to know if you don’t get PreCheck on your boarding pass despite being a Trusted Traveler program member.

Why Didn’t I Get TSA PreCheck on My Boarding Pass if I’m a PreCheck Member?

Kekyalyaynen | Adobe Stock

There are five reasons reasons that your boarding pass won’t show the PreCheck symbol if you’re a PreCheck/Global Entry member:

Your Known Traveler Number Isn’t Attached to Your Booking

The first reason is that the airline may not have received your known traveler number. This is the number that you’re issued when you become a member of a Trusted Traveler Program (like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry). Sometimes, the airline doesn’t ask you to input this number when buying a ticket, or there was an error and the number didn’t transfer from your frequent flyer profile to the reservation.

You can fix this by calling the airline and asking them to add your known traveler number to your reservation and reissue the ticket. You can also try adding the number yourself online and re-downloading your boarding pass, but you might have to call the airline in order to get the ticket reissued so the TSA PreCheck logo populates.

You’re Flying an Airline That Doesn’t Participate in TSA PreCheck

Not all airlines participate in the TSA PreCheck program, so if you’re flying with a carrier not on this list, you won’t be eligible for PreCheck despite being a member.

Your Membership Has Expired

Before you get mad about your lack of PreCheck, double check that your membership has not expired. You can look up your membership status here.

There’s an Error on Your Booking

A typo in your name, date of birth, or Known Traveler Number will throw off the system and prevent you from being issued TSA PreCheck. Carefully review the information on your boarding pass and airline profile and make sure it exactly matches your Trusted Traveler profile. Even something as small as a hyphen can trigger an error.

You’ve Been Randomly Selected for Extra Screening

As an extra security precaution, the TSA does not guarantee that trusted travelers will receive PreCheck every time they fly. According to the agency, “TSA uses unpredictable security measures, both seen and unseen, throughout the airport. All travelers will be screened, and no individual is guaranteed expedited screening.”

What Should I Do if I Didn’t Get TSA PreCheck on My Boarding Pass?

If you’ve checked that your reservation has your correct Known Traveler Number, date of birth, and name—and your membership is still valid—you can submit an online form asking the TSA to look into why you didn’t get PreCheck on your boarding pass.

The TSA asks that flyers complete the form three days before travel so that they have time to troubleshoot the issue, but this can be challenging since you generally can’t check-in online more than 24 hours before your flight. If you need urgent help, try contacting @AskTSA on Twitter (X) or Facebook Messenger.

America’s national parks are beautiful—but they are also wild places that can be dangerous if you don’t follow outdoor recreation safety guidelines. Every year, people go missing or get hurt in national parks, but some national parks are deadlier than others.

Outdoor clothing company KÜHL decided to find out what the top ten most dangerous national parks in America are by analyzing data from all 63 national parks.

The study looked at statistics from the National Parks Service and data from Google Maps, and assigned each park a weighted score using the following criteria:

  • Number of total deaths from 2007-2023
  • Number of missing persons from 2007-2023
  • Frequency of search and rescue missions from 2013-2020
  • Number of visitors to each park from 2007-2022
  • Amount of trail closures, alerts, and cautions due to animal presence
  • Number of park rangers
  • Proximity to hospitals

  7. Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska
  8. Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota
  9. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
  10. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio

What Are the Leading Causes of Deaths in National Parks?

Falls are the leading cause of death in national parks, accounting for 20.3 percent of fatalities.

Other main causes of death in national parks include:

  • Falls (20.3%)
  • Drowning (12.9%)
  • Motor vehicle crashes (11.8%)
  • Other transportation (3.5%)
  • Hypothermia (3.4%)

National Park Safety Tips

Many national park incidents could have been prevented by following basic safety tips.

  1. Don’t lose your life for a photo. Stay away from steep dropoffs, cliff edges, and barriers.
  2. Obey all posted signs within the park.
  3. Be prepared with appropriate gear and adequate amounts of food and water.
  4. Always check the weather forecast and change your plans if storms are predicted.
  5. Stay on marked trails.
  6. Let someone know where you will go inside the park and when you’ll return.
  7. Maintain a safe distance from wildlife at all times.
  8. Exercise caution when swimming in national parks. Never swim alone, and always wear a life jacket aboard watercraft.
  9. Pack an emergency kit with first aid supplies.
  10. Be careful when driving—don’t get so distracted by scenery that you forget to concentrate on the road, and don’t stop suddenly to look at wildlife or take photos.

The 15 Most Walkable Cities in the US, Ranked https://www.smartertravel.com/most-walkable-cities-in-america/ https://www.smartertravel.com/most-walkable-cities-in-america/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2024 20:28:14 +0000 https://www.www.smartertravel.com/2016/04/07/10-most-walkable-cities-in-america/ These are the best cities in the U.S. to vacation on foot.

The post The 15 Most Walkable Cities in the US, Ranked appeared first on SmarterTravel.

Traffic, car rentals, and packed public transportation don’t make for a relaxing vacation. For your next trip, choose one of these U.S. cities that are a paradise for walkers. Pound the pavement in the concrete jungle in New York City or stroll along the water in San Francisco—some of America’s best destinations are also the most walkable.

We compiled data from Smart Growth America’s Foot Traffic Ahead rankings to determine the best walkable cities in the US. This non-profit group measures destination walkability in the 35 largest US metropolitan areas by analyzing walkability metrics to create an overall walkability score.

Michael Rodriguez, Director of Research at Smart Growth America, explains how they determine which city is the best for walking. “When we talk about walkability in Foot Traffic Ahead, we’re asking two questions: How many businesses and destinations are within walking distance, and are there sidewalks, crosswalks, and other safety features that make it easy to walk from Point A to Point B?”

Rodriguez says these walkable areas are some of the most popular tourist destinations. “Travelers can likely save on transportation costs by choosing to visit our top-ranking metros and staying in walkable areas.” After all, Rodriguez explains, “Few recreational tourists spend money to go stay in an empty business park on a weekend.”

The report found that the most walkable cities in the U.S. tend to be on the coasts, except for Chicago.

These are the best cities to walk in the US:

  1. New York, New York (Walkability Score: 100)

Since less than half of New York City residents own a car, it’s no surprise that The Big Apple is the most walkable city in America. The city block grid design makes it easy to find your way without getting lost (or being glued to your smartphone), and you’ll find endless choices for breaks to refuel on every block.

New York’s public transportation system is the best in the country, with buses, subways, trains, and ferries making the city even more accessible.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Little Italy, NoLita, and Bowery.

Best Walkable Hotel: Equinox Hotel New York

  1. Boston, Massachusetts (Walkability Score: 74.3)

While the Windy City is at its most walkable in the spring, summer, and fall, you can still get around by foot even on the coldest winter days, thanks to Chicago’s Pedway. The Pedway is the city’s system of underground tunnels and overhead bridges connecting more than 40 blocks in downtown Chicago.

Chicago’s train system nicknamed the “L” for its elevated tracks, began operating in 1892, making it the oldest metro system in the country. There are over 140 stations throughout the city and suburbs to help you explore without a car.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: East Ukrainian Village, Wicker Park, and Near North Side.

Best Walkable Hotel: Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile

  1. Los Angeles, California (Walkability Score: 59)

Los Angeles is a famously car-centric city, with traffic-clogged freeways and ample parking lots, but that wasn’t always the case. Many neighborhoods within the city were originally designed as walkable urban enclaves.

The city is trying to change its dependence on automobiles and return to its walkable roots. “Los Angeles is the most densely populated metro in the U.S. and there is an understanding that they have reached the limit of freeway expansion as a part of their transportation system,” explains Smart Growth America.

The city recently invested $180 billion to expand and improve its regional transit system.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Santa Monica.

Best Walkable Hotel: DoubleTree by Hilton Los Angeles Downtown.

  1. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Walkability Score: 57.2)

Nicknamed the “City of Bridges” for the more than 400 bridges connecting communities across the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers, Pittsburgh is great for a scenic stroll by the water.

If you’re considering relocating, Pittsburgh earned high marks in the walkability study for housing affordability in its most pedestrian-friendly areas.

Regarding public transportation, Pittsburgh has 27 light rail stations, 700 buses, and boasts the oldest continuously operating funicular railway in the U.S.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Friendship, and Bloomfield.

Best Walkable Hotel: Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh Downtown.

  1. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Walkability Score: 55.1)

With all of the unique regional cuisine that Philadelphia has to offer (like cheesesteaks, hoagies, and water ice), you’ll be grateful for the city’s high walk score and the chance to walk off your indulgences. In addition to a vibrant downtown area, Philadelphia has more than 10,000 acres of public green space for when you need a nature fix.

Philadelphia is also home to the sixth-largest public transportation system in the U.S., the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), which includes trains, subways, trolleys, and buses.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West, and Avenue of the Arts South.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Notary Hotel

  1. Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minnesota (Walkability Score: 54.4)

There are over 40 colleges and universities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, and a dense cluster of walkable amenities have sprung up around these lively communities. Downtown St. Paul is undoubtedly the best neighborhood for walkers, with everything you could need located within just a few blocks.

Although the walk between the centers of Minneapolis and St. Paul would be long, a light rail connects the two.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Summit Hill, and Summit-University.

Best Walkable Hotel: Hyatt Place St. Paul/Downtown.

  1. Miami, Florida (Walkability Score: 54.2)

Avoid Miami traffic and explore this lively city on foot instead. Soak up the sun while you stroll along the 7-mile Miami Beach Boardwalk, or eat your way through the Calle Ocho neighborhood on a walking restaurant crawl while being serenaded by live music.

Miami has a 25-mile elevated rail system, Metrorail, that is a great way to get between Miami International Airport and Downtown Miami without needing a car. Once you’re downtown, hop aboard the Metromover, a free public bus traveling through the city’s most popular areas.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, Wynwood-Edgewater, and Little Havana.

Best Walkable Hotel: 1 Hotel South Beach.

  1. Charlotte, North Carolina (Walkability Score: 51.7)

Although Charlotte is a fairly car-dependent city overall, it’s a great example of what the Smart Growth America study calls “walkable villages within a big city.” Head to Uptown Charlotte (the city’s center) to see this in action. This area is divided into four smaller neighborhoods or wards, which are very walkable.

Although Charlotte’s public transportation network isn’t as robust as others on this list, it does have buses and two short light rail lines.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Uptown, Plaza Midwood, and South End.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Ivey’s Hotel.

  1. Austin, Texas (Walkability Score: 50)

Austin is an oasis of walkability in Texas’ famously car-centric culture. Downtown Austin is by far the most walkable area in the city. Designed in a grid system, this compact city center is easy to navigate and features acclaimed restaurants, lively bars, and boutique shops on practically every block.

Although Austin’s public transportation is limited to its Capital Metro Bus System, the city is also reasonably bike-friendly if you want an alternative method for getting around than walking.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Downtown, West University, Bouldin Creek.

Best Walkable Hotel: Thompson Austin.

  1. Atlanta, Georgia (Walkability Score: 49.4)

Atlanta’s walkability really depends on what neighborhood you’re in. In Peachtree Center, in the heart of downtown, you’ll find many shopping and dining hubs within easy walking distance from one another. Once you get further from the city center, it’s more likely that you’ll need a car to get around.

The city is also prioritizing improving its bikeability, as evidenced by the Atlanta Beltline Trail, a 22-mile rail trail that encourages walking and biking.

Atlanta’s public transportation system, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) serves over 100,000 people daily across its network of buses and trains.

Most Walkable Neighborhoods: Peachtree Center, Sweet Auburn, Midtown.

Best Walkable Hotel: The Westin Peachtree Plaza.

The Least Walkable City in the US

If you’re wondering what least walkable city in the U.S. is, Las Vegas ranked last out of the 35 cities on the list. The study notes, “The only high-density walkable urbanism in the metro is along The Strip.” However, The Arts District and downtown are both reviving, so hopefully, Las Vegas will see improved walkability outside of The Strip.

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will completely block out the Sun. The eclipse will start over the South Pacific Ocean and then pass over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Although a partial solar eclipse will be visible from almost everywhere in North America, you’ll only be able to see totality in certain areas.

When Is the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse?

Total solar eclipse rising above a mountain range

The first location in continental North America to see the total solar eclipse will be Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. The Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada will be the last place in continental North America to see the eclipse, where it will exit at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has provided a helpful chart that shows the time totality will begin in cities throughout the US.

How Long Will the Total Solar Eclipse Last?

Depending on where you are viewing the eclipse from, totality will last up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Can You Look Directly at a Total Solar Eclipse?

During totality, it is safe to look directly at the Sun, even through magnifying devices like binoculars or a telescope. However, do not look directly at the Sun if it is not in totality. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) warns, “Whenever any part of the photosphere is uncovered, it is essential to view the Sun through a safe solar filter, that is, one that meets the transmission requirements of the ISO 12312-2 international standard.” The AAS maintains a list of places to buy safe solar filters (you can even get them for free from some public libraries.) These are not something you’d want to buy from an unknown party on Amazon, in case they are counterfeit.

Sunglasses are not enough protection for looking directly at the sun. The AAS cautions, “Looking at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun through dark sunglasses or any other unapproved filter is a recipe for serious and potentially permanent eye injury.”

2024 Total Solar Eclipse Travel Tips

North America won’t see another total solar eclipse until March, 30, 2033—and even then, only Alaska will witness totality. A total solar eclipse won’t return to the lower 48 until August 23, 2044—which makes the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse special and worth traveling for. Book travel early as hotels, flights, and rental cars will sell out in prime viewing destinations well before 2024. Rates are also likely to increase the closer you book to the eclipse.

The Best Places to See the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in the US

For the best vantage points of the 2024 total solar eclipse, plan a trip to these destinations:

Erie, Pennsylvania

Since the centerline of the eclipse centerline skirts Lake Erie on the U.S. side, bypassing dry land in Pennsylvania, Erie emerges as the closest city to its trajectory without venturing into the water. Situated approximately 20 miles offshore, Erie enjoys extensive periods of totality during the event.

In downtown Erie, spectators will be treated to 3 minutes and 40 seconds of totality—but you can gain a few extra seconds of darkness (and have more open space to watch from) by driving out onto picturesque Presque Isle State Park.

The best places in Erie to watch the solar eclipse are:

  • Tom Ridge Environmental Center
  • Presque Isle Lighthouse
  • Presque Isle State Park
  • Erie Maritime Museum
  • Erie Land Lighthouse
  • North Pier Light

Where to Stay: Ask for a bay view room at the Courtyard By Marriott Erie Bayfront.

Niagara Falls, New York

For one of the most stunning views of the total solar eclipse, head to Niagara Falls. Arrive early to stake out a spot at Terrapin Point, where you’ll be able to witness the eclipse with the sun positioned directly over the Falls.

In downtown Niagara Falls, New York, totality will endure approximately 3 minutes and 31 seconds. The area is embracing this once-in-a-lifetime event, putting on a series of free events to celebrate the solar eclipse. Beginning on April 4, 2024, there will be a series of astronomical talks, exhibitions, and other experiences for the public to enjoy.

The best places in Niagra Falls to watch the solar eclipse are:

  • Niagara Aerospace Museum
  • Hyde Park
  • Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino
  • Niagara Falls State Park
  • Niagara Falls Observation Tower

Where to Stay: Book early to reserve a prime Falls view room at the Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel & Suites

Burlington, Vermont

Burlington’s Lake Champlain is beautiful on an ordinary day, so watching the total solar eclipse there will be even more special. The eastern shores of the lake will get about 3 minutes and 15 seconds of totality. The city of Burlington, Vermont, is putting on a series of events to commemorate the momentous occasion. Stop by Palmers Sugar House for a solar eclipse party, and then celebrate witnessing the eclipse at the Total Eclipse of the Heart afterparty at the Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain.

The solar eclipse will begin at exactly 2:14 pm in Burlington,  and totality will last between 3:26 through 3:29 pm. If Burlington is too crowded for you, head out into the countryside, as all of Northern Vermont will experience a total eclipse of the sun.

The best places in Burlington to watch the solar eclipse:

  • Centennial Field
  • Waterfront Park
  • Battery Park
  • Leddy Park

Where to Stay: The Courtyard by Marriott Burlington Harbor is a great budget-friendly choice in the heart of downtown Burlington.

Cleveland, Ohio

Skyline of Cleveland, Ohio at dusk

Plan a trip to Cleveland, which will be directly in the path of totality for nearly four minutes, for a day of fun and learning. The city will host an eclipse-themed celebration and offer plenty of public viewing spaces near Lake Erie. Cleveland lies almost directly on the centerline, so anyone in the downtown area will get to enjoy the eclipse for an extended period.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the University Circle community will host a fun weekend of events leading up to the solar eclipse, culminating in a community watch party on the Wade Oval on April 8.

The best places in Cleveland to watch the solar eclipse are:

  • The Cleveland Museum of Natural History
  • The Ritz-Carlton
  • Lake Erie
  • Crushers Stadium

Where to Stay: The Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland will host its own solar eclipse viewing party.

Dallas, Texas

Skyline of Dallas, Texas, USA at dusk

If you want to watch the total solar eclipse without freezing, Dallas is a great viewing spot that will have warm weather in April. The city’s downtown area will witness around 3 minutes and 51 seconds of totality starting at 1:40 p.m. CDT. If you’re hoping to avoid the Dallas crowds, several other Texas cities will be in the path of totality, including most of Fort Worth, Waco, Temple, most of Austin and parts of San Antonio.

The eclipse will pass over Dallas from 12:23 to 3:02pm, with totality occuring from 1:40 to 1:44pm. Although you’ll be able to see the eclipse in most spots in the city by simply going outside and looking up (just try to get away from tall buildings), there will be many viewing events around the city. The Perot Museum of Nature and Science and the Dallas Arboretum are both hosting watch parties, but be sure to buy your tickets early as they are likely to sell out.

The best places in Dallas to watch the solar eclipse:

  • Perot Museum of Nature and Science
  • Dallas Arboretum
  • Downtown Dallas
  • Samuell Farm

Where to Stay: Avoid the traffic and stay right in downtown Dallas at the luxurious Joule hotel.

The Best Places to Watch the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in Canada & Mexico

If you want to plan a trip abroad to watch the solar eclipse, here’s where you should go.

Prince Edward Island

Skyline of Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island at sunset

Location is key if you want to witness totality, so if you’re in Prince Edward Island, head to the wesetern region, which will experience around three minutes of totality. Skinner’s Pond, Ignish, and North Cape will all be good choices for a viewing spot.

The upcoming eclipse trajectory will travel in from a southerly to northerly direction. Canadians will catch the initial glimpse in the southern regions of Ontario, with Toronto situated on the periphery of the viewing zone. Subsequently, it will traverse through southern Quebec and New Brunswick before reaching P.E.I.

Totality is expected to envelop the Island starting from Summerside and extending westward, with the central path crossing over North Cape.

The best places in Prince Edward Island to see the solar eclipse are:

  • Summerside
  • Bedeque
  • North Rustic

Where to Stay: The charming Briarwood Coastal Cottages feature fully-equipped kitchens so you can avoid the crowds and dine in if needed.

New Brunswick

Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada

Where better to watch an eclipse than an observatory? The William Brydone Jack Observatory was built in 1851 and is the oldest existing astronomical observatory in Canada. The surrounding University of New Brunswick campus has plenty of open green space for crowds.

The city of Fredericton in New Brunswick is getting ready to welcome thousands of visitors for the solar eclipse, and will be hosting EclipseFest, a multi-day party leading up to the event. On the day of the solar eclipse, there will be free solar-eclipse glasses available at a watch party on Carleton Street.

The best places in New Brunswick to watch the solar eclipse are:

  • Fredericton
  • Woodstock
  • Florenceville-Bristol
  • Miramichi

Where to Stay: The Carriage House Inn is conveniently located near the William Brydone Jack Observatory and offers beautiful views of the St. John River.

Mazatlán

Combine a beautiful beach vacation in the charming town of Mazatlán along with a total solar eclipse viewing. The 13-mile boardwalk that lines the beach will be a perfect spot from which to watch. Mazatlan lies near the centerline of the eclipse, making it one of the best places in the world to watch the 2024 solar eclipse. Viewers in the town center will get to witness 4 minutes and 15 seconds of totality.

However, being situated in the southeastern part of town offers a slight advantage. Quintas del Mar resort experiences 4 minutes and 7 seconds of totality, whereas Playas del Sur provides 4 minutes and 18 seconds. The additional eleven seconds of totality will undoubtedly justify the journey once the eclipse is witnessed.

The best places in Mazatlan to watch the solar eclipse:

  • Quintas del Mar resort
  • Playas del Sur
  • Mazatlan Malecon

Where to Stay: Treat yourself to a room at the five-star, all-inclusive Pueblo Bonito Beach Resort.

Torreon

Surrounded by majestic mountains, Torreon will provide a beautiful backdrop to the eclipse. Torreon is another spot in Mexico that’s close to the centerline, making it one of the best places for a trip to watch the 2024 solar eclipse.

For the best views of the solar eclipse in Torreon, climb to the top of the Cerro de Las Noas hill. Or, head up route 49 toward Bermejillo in order to gain an extra 14 seconds of totality.

The best places in Torreon to watch the solar eclipse:

  • Cerro de las Noas
  • Fundadores Park
  • The Regional University Unit for Arid Zones of the Chapingo Autonomous University

Where to Stay: The centrally located, affordable Ibis Torreon is a great choice for travelers on a budget.

Let 2024 be the year you stop dreaming about that bucket list trip and finally book it. From riding the rails through Alaska’s stunning scenery to hiking along Japan’s under-the-radar coastline, these are the best trips to take in 2024.

Paris, France: Olympics Travel Package

The City of Light will be even more abuzz than normal as Paris hosts the 2024 Summer Olympics. The games will be hosted in iconic locations, so this is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch skateboarding in the Place de la Concorde, beach volleyball in the Champ de Mars, and equestrian events in the Palace of Versailles.

If snagging a hotel room and tickets to a game seems impossible, don’t worry—official packages that combine Olympic tickets and accommodations are available.

Torres del Paine National Park, Chile: Journeysmiths

Located towards the bottom of Chile, Torres del Paine National Park feels like the end of the earth. This rugged and wild place rewards intrepid visitors with stunning scenery around every turn. The best way to see the highlights of Torres del Paine is via the W Trek, a hiking trail that leads to the views of the most iconic sites in the park.

Although the W Trek traditionally involves camping or sharing rooms in a hostel-style refugio, bespoke travel company Journeysmiths can plan a custom trip along the trek with luxury resort accommodations instead of tents.

Hidden Gems of the Greek Cyclades, Greece: Kensington Tours

If every time you opened a social media app recently you saw another friend in Greece, it’s not a coincidence—tourism to this vacation hotspot has exploded over recent years. Enjoy all the best parts of Greece, without the crowds, on Kensington Tours’ Hidden Gems of the Greek Cyclades tour, which visits the lesser-known islands of Milos and Naxos.

The itinerary includes unique experiences like a citron liquor sampling at a local distillery and a private tour of Byzantine and Venetian relics.

Under the Northern Lights: Iceland & Greenland: Exodus Adventure Travels

To spot the Northern Lights, it’s best to head somewhere with minimal light pollution—like the middle of the Arctic. Exodus Adventure Travels’ Under the Northern Lights trip does just that, taking guests on a cruise around the remote coasts of Iceland and Greenland.

Although seeing the aurora borealis, polar bears, and whales isn’t guaranteed, you’re sure to see incredible mountains, fjord, and massive icebergs along the way.

Madagascar Adventure: World Expeditions

The Tsingy Rouge (Red Tsingy) in the region of Diana in northern Madagascar.

Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, and this remote island is home to an incredibly diverse ecosystem where you can find lemurs, chameleons, Baobab trees, and rainforests.

Traverse this unique country on World Expeditions’ 21-day Madagascar Adventure trip. On this extended tour, you’ll hike colorful sandstone canyons and swim in natural pools in Isalo National park, hike through the limestone pinnacles of Tsingy de Bamaraha, canoe along the Manambolo River, and more.

Alaska Railroad, Glaciers, Rails, and Trails Package

Seward, Alaska: Alaska Railroad (ARR) Class II railroad. Passenger train engine 4320. Coastal Classic Train takes passengers between Seward and Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula.

An Alaska trip might conjure up visions of cruises, but there’s a better way to immerse yourself in The Last Frontier—on a land-based trip, like Alaska Railroad’s Glaciers, Rails, and Trails journey. This 11-day package includes a variety of day trips featuring scenic train rides, glacier and wildlife cruises, glacial river float trips, and jetboat tours.

You’ll see the state’s highlights with stops in Kenai Fjords National Park, Denali National Park, and National Wild River Park.

Japan: Kyoto, Tokyo & the Michinouk Coastal Trail: G Adventures

Long known for its backpacker-budget trips, G Adventures recently branched out and launched The Geluxe Collection. These upgraded experiences combine active adventures with luxury accommodations and transport. Check out the new travel style on G Adventures’ Japan: Kyoto, Tokyo & the Michinoku Coastal Trail trip, an 11-day journey highlighting the best of Japan. The trip starts in Kyoto and ends in Tokyo, and visits Lake Tazawa and Jodogahama Beach along the way.

During the day, you’ll enjoy unique activities like creating crafts using bark from wild cherry blossoms or tasting sake at a 330-year-old brewery. At night, you’ll stay in four-star accommodation like the lakefront Tazawako Rose Park Hotel.

Cycle New Zealand: Otago Rail Trail: Intrepid Travel

The best way to see New Zealand? On two wheels. Intrepid Travel’s Cycle New Zealand Otago Rail Trail trip follows the spectacular Otago Central Rail Trail, a flat and traffic-free path that was voted New Zealand’s favorite ride for two years in a row.

The biking journey takes you on a loop from Queenstown to Omakau Ophir, Wedderburn, Hyde, and Middlemarch. In addition to cycling, there are opportunities to add some adrenaline in the form of bungy jumping or jet boating.

Sailing the Caribbean: National Geographic Travel

See the gems of the Caribbean in style on National Geographic Travel’s Sailing the Caribbean tour. This eight-day cruise takes place aboard the elegant square-rigger ship the Sea Cloud, a beautiful historic boat that was once the private yacht of Marjorie Merriweather Post. This elegant ship has just 30 staterooms, allowing for a much more intimate experience than a typical cruise.

The itinerary travels through some of the Caribean’s lesser-visited islands, including Dominica, Bequia, and Terre-de-Haut.

Disney Parks Around the World: Adventures by Disney

The Disney Parks Around the World trip is the ultimate splurge for true fans of the mouse. This luxury adventure costs $114,995 per person for 24 days and visits 12 Disney theme parks as well as three iconic real-world landmarks (the Taj Mahal, Pyramids of Giza, and the Eiffel Tower.)

You’ll travel in style on a private jet, and receive special behind-the-scenes access at many of the parks.

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to change bad habits and make resolutions. This year, why not make a few travel-themed pledges—specifically, packing-focused ones?

Committing to these five packing resolutions will help make your next trip easier and more enjoyable.

Stop Overpacking and Go Carry-on Only

Overflowing suitcase on a couch

Skip the stress over whether your bag will make it to your destination and learn how to become a carry-on only packer. Not only will you not have to worry about losing your bag, you’ll also have to drag less stuff around with you to/from the airport and in between hotels, which will make for a more enjoyable travel experience.

If I can’t convince you to go carry-on only, at least put an Apple Air Tag in your bag so you can track its journey to baggage claim.

Take Better Care of Your Gear

You’d never unpack without putting your dirty clothes in the laundry, but when was the last time you actually cleaned your suitcase? To keep your bag (and the contents inside of it) in good condition, you’ll want to start giving your luggage a good cleaning every few trips.

Follow our easy guide here to learn exactly what you need to do to keep your suitcase in good condition.

Make Packing Easier on Yourself

Packing is second only to long-haul flights as the worst part of travel, in my opinion. To make the process less painful, try keeping your bag partially pre-packed. I like to replenish my travel-size toiletries after each trip and keep my toiletry bag fully stocked ready to go in my suitcase, which means I have one less thing to worry about packing for my next trip.

Having pre-populated packing lists can also be a big time-saver. Use our downloadable checklists for a variety of trip types (including beach vacations, cruises, and more), or create your own custom version in the notes app on your phone.

Stop Last-Minute Packing

If you’re panic packing hours before you leave for your flight, you’re more likely to leave something important behind or overpack. Take out your suitcase a week before your trip and slowly pack as you come across items you’ll need to bring. This allows you extra time to do laundry or buy anything you might need on your trip.

Invest in a Quality Suitcase

A quality suitcase makes packing (and travel) just a little easier. A good suitcase has features (like pockets and compartments) to keep you organized, zippers that will hold even if you’ve overstuffed your bag, and smooth-rolling wheels that make walking to the gate a breeze.

Some investment-worthy suitcases the SmarterTravel team likes include Beis Travel’s Carry-On, Roam’s Carry-On, and Samsonite’s Under-Seat Carry-On Spinner.

Here’s a good reason to travel carry-on only next time you fly—during the first half of 2023, U.S. airlines lost or mishandled over 1.4 million bags. Out of 230 million bags that were checked in, 0.61 percent were lost or mishandled. (Mishandled luggage refers to any bag that has been lost, delayed, damaged, or stolen.)

Short-term luggage storage site LuggageHero analyzed data released by the U.S. Department of Transportation for the period of January to June 2023 to determine the best and worst airlines for luggage handling.

According to the study, American Airlines mishandled or lost the most bags in the first six months of 2023, with 0.80 percent of bags going missing or arriving late/damaged. American Airlines, United, and Envoy were the worst U.S. airlines overall for handling luggage.

If you must check a bag, try to fly on Allegiant, Endeavor Air, or Southwest, which LuggageHero named the best U.S. airlines for handling luggage. Allegiant Airline lost or mishandled just 0.16 percent of bags.

Tips for Preventing Lost Luggage

Reduce the chances of lost luggage by following these tips:

  1. Pack an Apple Air Tag or other tracking device inside your luggage
  2. Remove any old airline stickers or baggage tags before checking your bag
  3. Clearly label your luggage with your current contact information
  4. Avoid booking connecting flights
  5. Lock your suitcase with a TSA-approved lock

The sound quality and noise-canceling capability of Bose’s QuietComfort 45 headphones is incredible. They can connect to multiple Bluetooth devices simultaneously, so you don’t have to unpair and reconnect whenever you want to swap between devices. Sometimes, the smallest gifts can bring the biggest delight. This rule is especially true when it comes to presents for travelers, who value space, portability, and practicality over everything. These 11 stocking stuffer-sized gifts will surprise and thrill any jetsetter on your list this holiday season.

Take your phone with you anywhere you go (even underwater) with Nite Ize’s Waterproof Phone Case. This roomy protective case will fit pretty much any smartphone, and keep it dry even underwater. Made out of a clear, touchscreen friendly material, the case allows you to use your phone normally (including taking pictures with the front and back cameras) without taking it out of the bag. We love this waterproof case in particular because it features an easy-to-use zipper and the touchscreen actually works smoothly while inside (which is not the case with all cases).

Outdoorsy travelers will love to find a Nalgene Sustain Water Bottle in their stocking. Made from a BPA-free, lightweight material, these bottles are significantly lighter than most water bottles. They can hold super cold or boiling beverages, and can even double as a hot water bottle for cold nights during camping.

The Suistan line is made with 50 percent recycled material, so travelers can feel good about using these instead of plastic water bottles. The bottles are leakproof and have a wide mouth that’s easy to fill, and best of all, they’re dishwasher safe.
